Another strategy is to use people with long range weapons. I've found Saki to be of tremendous use.

The long-range weapons need to be quick to work, though. Saki and Ryu can murder him with their projectile, but PTX-40A won't be able to block in time after using them, making them a very bad idea.

When Yami is about to grab, I think you can also run towards him. If you are very close to him (almost underneath him), his hand will miss.

Somebody set up us the bomb.

Yeah, that hand grab is ludicrous, pretty much instant death. Okay, I'll try to avoid Hypers or jumping at it, but man, it really really really sucks!

what difficulty level are you playing it on?

also try setting damage to four stars. i find it more enjoyable that way. unless you enjoy long drawn out matches.

Edgey, Gumshoe, Godot, Sissel, Larry, then Mia, Franziska, Maggie, Kay and Lynne.

I'm throwing my money at the screen but nothing happens!

As I mentioned, you can break out of it with a Mega Crash (press all three attack buttons and the partner button at the same time).

When Yami begins to perform his brutal-grab-fire-thing, that means when he glooms, and raises his hand, just do a super jump (down-up on d-pad). He is going to miss you, and when you are next to him, you can attack while falling down.
But I have to admit, I hate also him, the fight just doesn't feel ...mh...right. I would find it better, when there was an option to deactivate the bossbattle.

I've trying to work my way back up to 50% in Ranked Battles. I'm now at 37 wins and 37 losses, but the win % is only at 48.6 because of disconnects... :

It's very interesting that I lose much less at night than during the day. I've committed to only fight Free Battles when I have time during the day now.

Exactly. It's just not fun to fight him and if I have to piss about with using specific characters or moves I can't even pull off reliably, like throwing Tekkaman's blade, then it just sucks the joy out of the game. I'm really disappointed in this because I like the OTT nature of the hyper moves and the classic Tatsunoko characters, but the final boss battle is just crap. I've tried playing with the difficulty settings, but I cannot be bothered with anything easier than the default because the regular matches are just at the point where I can potentially lose -- if anything I'd increase the difficulty which would make the final boss even more impossible! Jacking up the damage just meant that the PTX robot was able to kill me for the first time, so whilst that sped up regular matches it doesn't seem to be a solution against Yami.

I thought maybe Survival Mode could be the answer and I could just stick to playing that, but on default difficulty it's way too easy because each fight seems to be like the first match in Arcade Mode rather than getting progressively more challenging and your health regens between fights (gee that would be nice on the final boss); plus the characters started to repeat after the 12th match. Of course if I only play this mode that would also mean having to use cheats to unlock other characters which is also lame.

It's like Zak & Wiki all over again: game is great up until the end and then Capcom makes and arse of it by sucking the fun out it (broken difficulty in this game, broken controls in Z&W). Honestly it does make me wary of their future titles -- am I asking for too much here? I'm very close to just dumping this game, but I really want to enjoy it. All I wanted was a fun Street Fighter game!

I agree, he's not a fun boss, and it's impossible to do anything interesting whiel fighting him, either, it's just blocking and dealing a quick, damaging attack when he's open.
If you're still having trouble, I suggest using Saki and just jumping and shooting, it should kill him before he kills you.

It's not just the 3rd form -- two or three of the games I played yesterday I couldn't even get past the 2nd form because of those bloody arms that seem to hit the mark every time. I guess I just need to try to be more patient. I find the boss fight so annoying I get focused on trying to dispatch him as quickly as possible, but I end up getting pummeled. Maybe I just need to lay off the game for a day or two and chill with the Rabbids .

I don't suppose Cross Generation of Heroes is any easier at the end?

Yeah, you can't rush him, since your attacks won't stun him like they do normal opponents. Just block until he hits you, hit him back, then go back to blocking until he hits you again. Shouldn't be too hard, just boring and tedious.

Actually, yes, Yami's attacks are less damaging, and he waits much longer between attacks. He takes more hits before he dies, though.
Also, the lowest difficulty setting in CGoH is much easier than the lowest setting in UAS, I believe.

Hard to imagine the lowest difficulty being easier than UAS, I only played it for a couple of minutes, but the enemies just seemed to stand still like in Training Mode!

I watched some video of Cross Generation and I agree, it does seem Yami is more beatable, but the hyper moves also seem less OTT from what I saw. I'll give it another go before deciding the fate of this game!

Yeah!!! Just got this game today. I've only played it for an hour, but I love it already!!

Note: I haven't gone online yet, so don't ask me for my friend code, will have it tomorrow.

Well, thanks to everyone for the tips with Yami and encouraging me to try again.

I'm pleased to announce I beat him with my team (Yatterman-1/Tekkaman) yesterday for the first time (I decided to forego getting another high score and just kept continuing -- fourth or fifth time was the charm) last night! Doing the super jump when the 3rd form is doing the big grab hyper is a must, if that thing hits you it's game over. Now that I'm taking time and blocking the 2nd form is the easiest. 1st one is still quite challenging because of that hyper attack that drains your health, so I just take the lumps and lay into it.

Now that I know it can be done, I'm enjoying the game again. Just the idea that I'd have to cheat in order to enjoy the full fruits of the game was really eating at me before, but now I can just chill and know that sometimes I can beat that bastard. Still a totally rubbish boss. Capcom really should have had a boss team that captured the spirit of what they were doing here and had M. Bison and Zoltar as the final opponents -- THAT would have been cool!

I'm also quite disappointed that my reward for beating the game was to have a Character page for Yami available for purchase and the stills from the game ending (if Cross Generation of Heros has fully-animated endings that probably will make it worth a purchase for me) -- what the hell? I don't even get one bloody character unlocked -- how about a bonus movie then? Lame lame lame. Now I need to beat the big ugly ball with Yatterman-1 before moving on to another team!

This also has made me very interested in seeing these Tatsunoko animes, so I hope they ride the back of this release and release some of these overseas -- even if they are unknown. If anyone (Adamant, I'm looking at you) can recommend a source for quality DVDs of the shows (preferably with English subtitles), I'm definitely interested in Yatterman, Tekkaman, Gatchaman and really anything based on the characters from the game.

Sean - I'm glad you finally toppled Yami! I recorded a match of Ryu playing keep away from Yami - this is a really easy method to get a handle on if you're interested in burning through the game to unlock characters. With the exception of getting caught in Yami's little drill hand at the beginning (my bad!), you can pretty much stay unharmed by jumping around and blocking, and keeping as far away as possible. If you think Yami is cheap, you may as well counter it as such. The difficulty was set to 5 stars, and damage was left at normal (I never changed any of the damage / hyper settings when playing - I prefer to keep damage and other settings as close to online matches as possible)

(Sorry in advance for the shade blocks - comes with using a camcorder.)

Also, playing this game definitely made me more interested in Tatsunoko. I don't know if you can get Hulu in the UK, but it has a few episodes of Gatchaman. They were alright, but they're in English - I was hoping for Japanese with subtitles.

Yeah, you need to beat the game a couple times with different characters to unlock new ones. In Cross Generations, you got new characters right away, as well as an animated ending movie AND a new minigame for each character you beat it with.

(also, if I was in charge of the game, the final boss would be "Bison Boss", the fusion of M. Bison and Braiking Boss. Now that would be awesome)

At your service. I assume you got a region-free DVD-player (if not, get one), since most of this probably isn't released in the UK.
Gatchaman got a nice release some years back, and it shouldn't be too hard to get ahold of. Karas is even easier, being still in print.
Tekkaman is unavailable, but Tekkaman Blade is . Likewise, the original Casshern series never got a release, but the OVA remake did, sporting the same weird names as the game (supposedly there's some confusion about which DVD release has subtitles and which is dub-only, so be careful when buying).

Hurricane Polymar and Gold Lightan are completely unavailable, so you're out of luck regarding those. Yatterman and Ippatsuman, however, are part of the Time Bokan franchise - while their individual series can't be bought, the crossover OVA is available, which not only focuses largely on Yatterman, the most popular of the 7 Time Bokan series, but also has cameo appearances of a lot of other character from this game.

My character team is Soki, and Batsu.
Polimar, and Ippatsuman are my "last resort" team.
