I've been considering getting another Wii for a while now. The model I currently own has been showing signs of wear, and it doesn't have GameCube support. This is an issue for me since I've been wanting to expand my collection to GameCube games for a while now and don't currently have a way to play them. Would it be worth it to buy a used Wii somewhere, and if so, what should my budget be?
@Stets GameCube games keep going up in price. If it was me I'd just save the money and pray that we get Wii and GameCube ports and play them on the switch. Despite selling my Wii u, GameCube, and Wii I kept the games which were going to go up in price.
@Stets I think you need to turn that around: first decide what you're actually WILLING to spend, because it should be about what it's worth to you, and prices for used systems can be totally insane in some areas, so you should decide what your limit is going to be, and then go from there.
But having said that, I'm definitely in the pro GameCube compatible Wii team, so I'd definitely recommend getting one. I don't know where you're at in the States, but there's various good online shops, and one of my go to stores with great service and decent prices is LukieGames. Here you go: https://www.lukiegames.com/wii-systems
And here's their games catalog, Wii and GameCube respectively:
You can use the filters on the pages, to sort them by price and so on.
An important piece of advice: do NOT buy a so-called "family edition" Wii, seeing as that version is NOT GameCube compatible. Well, at least not officially...
I think an actual Gamecube would be a better option if you care about all the accessories (like GBA Player) and plan to mod it in the future. I've heard it has great compatibility for playing game backups natively - I can guarantee your discs and the lens won't last much longer in either console - so you'll have to consider that procedure at some point if you plan to keep them functional for the years ahead.
If not, just go for the cheaper standard Wii, I used mine to play GC games and it works fine. Keep in mind you can't use any of the link features present in some games that require a GBA Player... and it's worth mentioning a modded Wii doesn't have perfect compatibility with GC backups.
I personally wouldn’t. It’s right in the middle of the “so old you’d buy it for nostalgia” and “so new you’d buy it because it’s new”. It’s just old. Outdated graphics and mediocre games. I’d highly suggest against it.
@1UP_MARIO not in my opinion. The galaxy games and the Zelda games are the only ones worth mentioning. Everything else was either largely forgettable or bland in terms of Nintendo Quality. And a lot of it’s titles were Remakes of old games. (And yes I know the switch does too, but never on the level if they Wii)
@Apportal
Actually i have interest with Wii "shovelware" games. 🙂
Some of them are not really bad as you thought.
The ideas of casual games are really interesting for me such as Cooking Mama, My Sims, Lost in Blue, Help Wanted 50 Wacky Job, etc.
I know those games are not great as 1st party Wii games but i don't really mind as long they have decent cartoonish graphics, easy gameplay, not broken games then i'm fine with them.
@Stets
Go for it.
Buy another Wii to replace your old Wii if it no longer playable.
You can consider other region Wii to play Regional exclusive Wii games on PAL / Japan version.
@Apportal Nah I disagree with that, beyond Zelda and Mario there were some crackers on there like Metroid Prime, Punch Out, the operation rainfall games, Little Kings Story, Zack and Wiki, Sin & Punishment, No More Heroes etc
While I already have one (with GameCube compatibility) I'm tempted to pick up another one particularly for playing GameCube games that I have missed out on over the years as well as other console exclusives (especially The Sims consoles games, as I LOVED the early GBA/DS games before it all turned to poo).
I have a GC controller from the Wii U era (which launched alongside Smash on Wii U) but I'd have to grab at least one more for multiplayer, which I'm sure would suffice for my purposes.
Porygon did nothing wrong.

My Wii U plays gamecube games! Does yours? Modding is awesome! Not such a pathetic flop console now is it? I stand by my opinion. The Wii U was and still is pretty sweet! Even without a mod but still. Now i have a console which plays 6 generations of Nintendo games!
