If you have played any Smash game before with a GameCube controller, get the GameCube adapter. Any other control scheme will feel unnatural and weird in my experience. Once you GC Smash, you can't go back.
I went back.
Formally called brewsky before becoming the lovable, adorable Yoshi.
Now playing:
Final Fantasy XIV (PC) | The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (Switch) | Celeste (Switch)
If anything, playing Wii U Smash w/ the GCN controller IS going back. Technically, one would be going forward by choosing the 8th gen Pro controller Kidding aside, I don't think there is a superior controller for Smash. It's all opinion. I used to play Smash Bros. with GCN controllers, almost religiously, then I ended up getting stuck with the Classic Controller Pro and got used to it faily easily, actually.
I'd say biting the bullet and growing accustomed to the Pro Controller is ultimately the best option, because then you have a more versatile controller overall(more buttons) that will work with ALL your games. Playing Smash Bros. with the Pro controller is on the same ground as playing the 3DS Smash Bros. game, or playing Smash Bros. on Xbox 360/One, if that was actually a thing.
People saying that Smash Bros. is unplayable without the GCN are kidding themselves, though. That's for sure, because I'll be able to play just fine. I never see/saw anyone complain about the lack of N64 controller support If this is anyone's first time playing Smash, it doesn't really matter what controller they use, IMO. People have grown very accustomed to Xbox 360 type controllers, so it's not a big deal in the entire scope of things, if you ask me.
I've been the biggest Pro Controller supporter since I bought the Wii U at launch. Wind Waker HD, Mario Kart 8, Mass Effect 3, Tropical Freeze - all only ever played with the Pro Controller. But I'm sorry - for Smash it's Game Cube controller all the way. I just have too much muscle memory built up with that series and that controller since 2001. I don't want to have to re-learn everything on something new, even though I do love the Pro Controller.
My game library ranges from Mario Kart to Call of Duty to Tales of Xillia to Diablo 3 to Forza. To me gaming is about having fun - not blindly supporting only one company while thumbing your nose at "the evil other systems."
Pro controller. I used the Classic controller on Brawl and I'll use the Pro controller here. Never been a fan of the Gamecube controller.

$60? I've only ever seen it for $50, tops, and Best Buy had some opened and returned ones for $41 + tax, but that was almost a year ago.
If you already have a ton of GCN controllers laying around, it makes sense to pay the $20 or however much it costs for the adapter. Otherwise, dishing out $30 per controller seems like a bit much for one game. That's besides that the GamePad counts as a controller, I have 2 Pro controllers, then also having 4 CCPs with Wii remotes and nunchucks. I just hope we don't have to have the GCN controllers to play 8 players, at least.
