I enjoy both but prefer turn based RPGs, but that makes sense because I've grown up with Pokémon. Over the years I've branched out into the SMT, Persona and Fire Emblem series so I've come to appreciate the strategy of turn based battle systems.
Octopath Traveller seems to have a fun battle system but it seems like an easier version of Bravely Default's battle system. I'm hoping that enemies will be able to "break" party members because that would add more tension to fights.
I don't care for the action based battle in the Tales series but I really enjoyed the battles in Ni No Kuni. If the rumours are true then hopefully Pokémon will use a Ni No Kuni approach, but I'd rather have the old system.
@Kimyonaakuma I kind of hope Gamefreak keeps Pokémon turn based but update the system to something more current. Heck, they could even copy paste FF7's materia/ATB system into Pokémon using poffins & I'd be happy.

I prefer turn-based too, though I haven't played many action RPGs. I really don't want Pokémon to become action-based, and I doubt it would happen. They've spent over 20 years building up and balancing a hugely complex turn-based system which has a thriving competitive scene, so for them to throw that all away and replace it with a different subgenre wouldn't go down well at all.
Thank you Nintendo for giving us Donkey Kong Jr Math on Nintendo Music
@JaxonH Turn based strategy games I sometimes enjoy. I liked Advance Wars when I played it years ago on the GBA but I didn't spend enough time with it. When I played it again on Wii U I absolutely loved it. It was all I played until I beat it. I then bought Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones on Wii U VC and was getting right into it and then Breath of the Wild came out and I never went back to it. So I know I can enjoy those games. When it comes to RPG's though I just can't get into them. I find the random battles with grunts annoying. I end up just spamming the attack with no strategy behind it. Then when that stops being effective I give up haha. Xenoblade Chronicles worked for me as that was real time rather than stage based and more action than turn based. Like you say, the right game can change my opinion so I haven't completely given up on them.
@Lroy Mario v Rabbids came out at the wrong time for me. I bought it and was getting into it but then I had to come back to the UK and my gaming time was limited for the first few weeks. I planned on returning to Thailand long before now so said to myself I'll save it for when I get back. Months later I still haven't returned due to various reasons and I still haven't played it again. I will though and I know I'll enjoy it, as like I said above, turn based strategy games I like. It's just in RPG's I don't find enjoyment in the battles. I much prefer getting stuck in about the enemy with my sword or weapon of choice.
With a little luck, Square Enix will bring it to Switch now that it's a viable alternative for them to sell their JRPG's on. Might take a couple years but, I'd be shocked if they didn't bring both FFX/X-2 HD and FFXII.

@DanteSolablood I'd just like to have a more complex battle system in general. There are so many Pokémon now that they need something to set them apart, maybe extra abilities or items that could add different effects. I would just like a level of difficulty that's between having the game tell you a Pokémon's weakness and wasting time training for EVs and IVs. I feel like there should be a middle ground between these and they could add difficulty levels to help people adjust.
I think the return of the Battle Frontier could make a good excuse for some flashy HD graphics and different battle types. They could add the old rules from previous Battle Frontiers but with different frontier brains. Add the Battle Royale from Sun and Moon and the 3D fighting style from Pokken Tournament and they would have a good amount of variety.
A building to fight every previous gym leader/trial captain/important trainer would also be nice but I'd want one of those in every game
Then I played Fire Emblem Awakening. Which made me give Final Fantasy X another shot afterwards... and I loved it.
Sometimes all it takes is the right game to change your perspective on a genre. And once the eyelids open, there's no closing them.
The opposite happened to me with jrpgs. The first jrpg game I played was Final Fantasy 7 and I loved it back then, so I tried other games in the genre but I really could not like any of them. Every game seemed more boring than the previous one, and I have been expecially disappointed by other Final fantasy games that seemed like the worst in the genre (but maybe it was just because I had very high expectations since I loved FF7 so much).
I like the first Paper Mario game anyway. It is the only exception other than FF7.
I used to be a ripple user like you, then I took The Arrow in the knee
Normally I don't endorse Kickstarter projects but, I feel this one kinda deserves some attention.
The Chicken Wiggle Kickstarter from Atooi. I hear the game is legit, with a solid level editor, but we all know he bet on the wrong horse with 3DS.
So this project is only asking for 30,000 for funding (which is very reasonable). It's got 19 days left and about $9,000 to go. But according to trends there's a 10 day lull that happens at the halfway mark, typically only bringing in a grand total of what one normal day usually would. So it's gonna be a close one, and unfortunately development will not progress unless funded (some projects say they'll develop regardless but, this one needs the capital).
So I backed it, was only $10 and I know I'd buy the game anyways. Of course the early bird tiers sold out so I think there's only the $15 ones left. But that's going to be the price of the game anyways, and if it means the difference between getting the game and not getting it... why not.
Anyways, I'll just drop this here in case anyone is interested.
@rallydefault interesting. How do you manage not to get sucked in and play for longer? 15 min is almost never satisfying for me, except for multiplayer games with quick matches like Splatoon.
@skywake that makes sense. I guess I’ll really appreciate that once I get the system
@Harmonie@JaxonH@OorWullie OK now I understand the flexibility of Switch better, just immediately starting to play thru sleep mode sounds great. But doesn’t the system get damaged if you just leave it constantly on for a week?
@RR529 I think it's supposed to be decent, it think it received the highest Famitsu score last week.
...but I don't think last week was a thrilling week for japanese releases
It seems okay though, not game of the year but still enjoyable while you wait for the next big RPG. I'm still not sure what the story is to be honest, girls jump into paintings and make potions? Who knows...
@Dogorilla@Kimyonaakuma While I definitely don't want Pokémon to become an Action RPG, the game definitely needs some sort of refresh as the last major update to the core battle system was in Gen 3 with duel types, abilities & completely overhauling the physical/special attack mechanics. I guess we'll see what happens!
I want change, just the right change.

@DanteSolablood Best change for me would be keep the turn based aspect but make everything else just like BotW (graphics and stuff) = MEGA PROFIT and 999 Game of the Year rewards.

I usually leave Switch in sleep mode during the day but in the night I turn it completely off because I put it in my backpack, I don't want to leave it around while I'm sleeping.
So basically I usually turn it COMPLETELY off once per day, sometimes when I have to go somewhere else and I bring it with me (I always keep it with me) I can turn it completely off and then on a few more times.
I just always turn it completely off everytime I want to put it in its case because I fear "background functions" like automatic downloads and similar things could make it overheat and cause damage when it is inside its case.
What do you guys think is this ok or I am turning it on and off too often? It seems like the console is not supposed to be turned completely off often and I don't want to wear it too much doing so more often than I should.
