Hello

Sorry if I have posted this in the wrong place...

Years ago, back in the early 00's, my boyfriend at the time bought a game on the Nintendo Gamecube called "Phantasy Star Online". Back then I was mostly playing Final Fantasy and SSX or whatever on the (new back then) PS2 but one week I was off work sick and I got really in to this game of his. Years pass, my PS2, SP, and WII have long been donated to family members since I never play games anymore....

That is until Lockdown 2.0 (England) came in during November 2020.

I bought a Switch and Animal Crossing and let us just say that my world on "Ko Luna" with my 10 animal mates, palm trees, and shell collecting in the snow, is probably better that my actual real life right now....

But I wondered - does Phantasy Star online still exist?? I have found out it does, but I cannot find it in my Nintendo Shop on my Switch???

Any suggestions how I can get this game, or if not, anything similar???

I tried Dauntless the free game but it isn't the same.

I would love to play an RPG type game like the oldschool ones where you can meet and chat online with peeps.

Thanking you

I loved PSO on the GameCube...I bought the LAN adapter just to play it.

Pretty sure you can still play on emulated servers if you have a copy and a GCN, but it has been a while since I tried.

@nerdface

Thank you very much for your reply. Forgive my ignorance but I do not know what an emulated server or a GCN is!!

I thought maybe I could play it on my SWITCH but I cannot find it in the store.....

@XxSupernova8xX GCN is the official abbreviation for the Gamecube.
An emulated server is basically a fan-made server that copies what the official one used to do and allows people to continue to play the game even though the official one doesn't exist anymore.
Sorry, I can't help you with setting that up, though.

@Shadowthrone Ahh thank you for explaining that!! Showing my age lol blush

I do not have a Gamecube anymore, I only have a SWITCH - I wonder why this game is not on the switch??? Which seems to be the most modern Nintendo machine....

@XxSupernova8xX The Switch is new and modern, but PSO isn't. It's a 21 year old game now and the official servers were shut down I think 10 years ago or so. That's why it's not available.

You might hear that there is a sequel, 'Phantasy Star Online 2', but that hasn't hit Switch yet in the West. As far as I know, it's only available on PC and Xbox outside of Japan.

@Shadowthrone That is a shame it shut down, and a shame the new version is not out in the UK!!

Thank you for your reply

@XxSupernova8xX I started playing PHANTASY STAR ONLINE again about 2 years ago,you can use private servers ( a server is what every one is on over the internet to play with each other ) there is a few server's like sylverant or the schett server's or ephinea ( just search for phantasy star servers and they will show up ). To get all the equipment you need, does cost around 200 quid, the game is around 20 euro, modem to connect to the net is around 30 euro or if you have broadband you will need a broadband adaptor which will cost at least 80 euro a gamecube cost around 40 euro with all the part's and you will need the gamecube keyboard which will cost around 80 euro. It is simple to set up once you get everything together, search you tube they have video's of how to get the game going online, there brilliant video,s. Make sure and look at them if you decide to play it. You still get about 20 people playing it online.the game is not on switch, but there is going to be a release of a phantasy star game that came out 8 years ago it did'nt say when it will be out.It is called phantasy star onlinne 2. Look forward to playing it. Hope all this answered you question.

You can play on pc for free on the Ephinea servers.

Just search PSO Ephinea to get the website. Fair warning though. Some anti-virus software prevents the game from loading.

The closest thing to PSO on Switch would be Warframe or maybe even the upcoming release of Skyforge. Both are action/role-playing games, but neither have progression systems that mimic PSO's random loot drop progression. I believe PSO 2 New Genesis is getting released on other platforms after its exclusive launch on XSX later this year, including the Switch? But who knows when or if that'll happen.

O.G. PSO 2 was released on Switch, but only in Japan. It might be the same for PSO 2 NG.

Best part about PSO was the dungeons and music. Hypnotic.

Really, I played with others, but I played alone too, and it’s still great. Maybe look for a gamecube, or look for a port to play.

Phantasy Star Offline!! (kinda)

PSO, FZero, and Super Monkey Ball (single player only, plebs) are my favorite Sega games ever.

So funny their fans hated Nintendo so much, that they all went Xbox. Hope panzer dragoon was worth missing Sega’s best output to date. I guess they did get PSO eventually.
