Some people can get crazy addicted to it, though, and I usually appreciate the overall variety the game offers. It feels less like a puzzle game and more like a playground of mayhem & violence in turn-based, Grid-Movement form.
So glad I resisted getting a PS4 for this. They usually release a portable edition with DLC included. Good to see they chose Switch this time as I don't have any Sony portables.
Indeed. Except usually it's because they always add more content to the portable versions. You could save a ton of money just by waiting 8 months...
It is also nice to be able to just take out the system and play a few battles to grind. It makes the powerleveling feel much less daunting (even though total time might be greater when playing in little chunks). It is like microtransaction vs a big purchase, except it's about perception of grinding time.
I played a lot of D1 and D2 because they are on the PSP. I played little of D3 and D4 because I never got a Vita.
Also not having to pay for the celestial hostess class is good. >_>
I'm getting the special edition. When I first played this game my expectations were more along the lines of a game like FE, which I quickly discovered was not the case.
But it's still a good game it's just different. I plan to give it a real shot this time on Switch, there's something about playing games on Switch that just seems really alluring.
Must be the controllers.

Debating on the Special Edition myself. I never played a Disgaea game but I was kicking myself for not ordering the Theatrhythm special edition because I ended up loving that game and I don't want that to happen again.

I've got the PS4 version, it's not as engrossing as the original and the art style has this odd 'looks like an iPad indie game' vibe. When I first heard it was coming to the Switch I was excited, but then I remembered that I stopped playng it because it was a little too repetitive. In reality it's not that much different to the first 2 that I played on the PS2, but perhaps that's the reason I'm bored with the gameplay?
Isn't it obvious that Falco Lombardi is actually a parrot?
@jump All the Disgaea games are separate stories. There's no reason not to jump on board with D5.
@MrGawain Disgaea games can have fun stories, but the gameplay is designed to be grindy. If you don't enjoy the grind, you won't get too much out of the game.
@Ralizah Slight correction: Disgaea 2 have minor but enjoyable connections, and Disgaea D2 is an out & out sequel to Disgaea 1. But otherwise, yes, the only thing you're missing out on by not playing the prequels (outside of each individual story, which I found amusing enough to get 1-4, though I never touched 4) is not being burnt out on the admittedly very grindy gameplay.
@CanisWolfred I'm not saying there aren't connections, just that they're separate stories that don't require one to play previous games to fully understand them. Sort of like Persona 4: there are references to P3 in there, but you aren't really missing much of anything if you didn't play P3 first.
My experience is similar, as I've played Disgaea 1 - 3 but got burnt out when the Vita version of 4 released.
Niikawa touched on porting from PS4 to Switch. Regarding that, he said the difficulty varies depending on how each studio approaches development.[...]There was nothing NIS had to downgrade, and he noted that even in portable mode, the experience still remain same as PS4 version.
On Famitsu, Niikawa explained why Disgaea 5 was chosen as NIS’ first title. Since it’s the company’s debut game on Switch and at launch, they felt it would be a big hurdle to bring out something completely new. A project was therefore chosen which would be smooth to port, and NIS thought it would be better to release its key product.
[...] Disgaea 5 was originally exclusive to PlayStation 4 and you can play it with Vita using Remote Play, but it wasn’t really a game for a portable device. However, NIS received many requests to port it to Vita. But if there was a Vita port, it would be necessary to downgrade the game. Since there has been high demand for Disgaea 5 to be on portable device, porting it to Switch would be a way of satisfying Nippon Ichi’s customers and fulfilling their demands.
[...]
When asked if NIS will make more games for Switch, Niikawa responded with a solid yes. The company won’t just make a game for launch and call it quits. Niikawa asks gamers to look forward to an announcement in the future.
Was Mariobro4. No, I'm not taking off my backpack...it's important.
Man, lack of interest in 3rd party topics, particularly this one, has me concerned for the welfare of 3rd party sales.
This game needs to do well so we continue seeing NIS support the platform. I know they said they have more coming down the line, but poor sales have been known to make companies do a 180 fairly quickly.
