I didn't find a thread for this so...here ya go. Given the list of voice actors revealed in yesterdays direct I'm more ....cautiously.....optimistic about the movie. Some I think are spot-on choice (Jack Black as Bowser? Yes) and others I'm not sure so sure about....

That being said, it could always get worse......

It appears Nintendo have no idea how to market a movie. Grumpy mugshots of the cast and the producer isn't the way to sell a kids film.

Anya Taylor-Joy is awesome, she was great in The Queen's Gambit and I'm really excited for Last Night in Soho but I expect this movie will go into the pile of her various other duds films like Glass and The New Mutants.

@YusseiWarrior3000 I wouldn't say the casting is bizarre, if anything it seems too safe as most of the cast already make up loads of animated kid films apart from Anya Taylor-Joy.

If only Luigi was played by Seth MacFarlane.

I think that, overall, the most disappointing thing for me was that it's clear they're trying to get us to pop for celebrity appearances, which is pretty common for this type of thing. And i'm not gonna suggest i'm not excited for some or morbidly curious about others, but it's just sort of a bummer they're taking the easy route. Not surprising though given the studio. Some footage or a screen still would've gone along way. Either in calming some nerves or rendering those nerves asunder.

@Losermagnet I don't think you can blame the studio, Ninty are very hands on with this. Also movies aren't like games when they make a big deal about announcing them and show off trailers 3 years before it comes out, trying to reconcile a movie with how video game hype works is gonna be tricky.

I wouldn't be surprised if there's a Mario game connected with the movie and they are trying to true up both for a simultaneous release so they are being cautious before committing.

@YusseiWarrior3000 So who were you expecting then? Rogan, Pratt, Black and Anya are pretty big names.

Chris Pratt has voiced stuff in The Lego Movie and Onward but is better know from Parks & Recs (his best role, take that Star Lord!) plus the Marvel and Jurassic World films.
Seth Rogan voiced main roles in Kung Fu Panda, The Lion King, Sausage Party and is known for literally almost starting a world war with The Interview plus a bunch of stoner movies.
Kevin Michael Richardson has done LOADS of bit part voice acting.
Keegan-Michael Key is another guy that had done loads of bit part voice acting but is best known as a comedian.
Charlie Day is another that has done bit part voice acting but is best known for It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
Anya Taylor-Joy hasn't done any cartoons but she was in The Queen's Gambit which was one of the best shows last year plus some things like Peaky Blinders and Emma.

@jump i meant in general with animated movies when they start highlighting the actors brought in before anything else I feel like it's to drum up publicity. Not saying that Ninty isnt also responsible for that though - i'm sure they want as much money as can be made from this. Point is that they aren't gunning for a Billy West, Laura Bailey, or John Dimaggio becaude nobody (outside of nerd culture) knows them. People will go to see this movie just because of Chris Pratt.

To add to that: your comment about the grumpy mug shots is pretty much it: they're saying "look at who we got? You like them right? Now suckle that teet - numnumnumnum".

One thing to remember is this movie is meant for everyone. Not many people, even fans of Mario, know who Charles Martinet is. Mario fans were going to see this movie regardless. People who originally would not have seen it might now that they revealed an unexpected all star cast.

@YusseiWarrior3000 Really? I actually thought the opposite and pretty much just sat there rolling my eyes as they announced them. I mean, Chris Pratt is probably one of the biggest stars of the last 10 years with the Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, Jurassic World, Lego Movies etc. It would be a bit of a stretch to call him an unknown.

I find it really distracting when you have big name actors doing voices in animated movies, especially when they've done other animated movies too. Unless Pratt puts on an accent as Mario I'm just going to hear Emmet from The Lego Movie 😂

@Losermagnet Yeah the whole thing was strange, maybe they were trying to do a comic-con thing and announce them to a live crowd but normally when that happens they come out to do panel and you can see the crowd loving it. A video clip of them saying how excited they are to play reads notes to remember what this movie whatever character would have helped rather than the hideous mug shots.

Thinking about Anya Taylor-Joy's role I reckon they must have cast her to play a more formal/regal type princess just because how good she is with detached characters. I always pictured Peach as more friendly and warm myself but hey-ho.

@YusseiWarrior3000 I'd really hate to see a pidgin English Mario for 2 hours, just cancel culture it now!

@jump when they announced the movie initially all i could think of was a movie full of the vaguely italian sounding gibberish they make in Superstar Saga 😂

@Losermagnet We aren't out of the woods just yet, we need to see that trailer. It wouldn't surprise me if Chris Pratt was in the recording booth being screamed at by Miyamoto for sounding too clear and he needs to be more broken gibberish Italian!

@YusseiWarrior3000 You don't get to complain about Illumination with their stupid Minion gibberish stuff and then say you want a movie where Mario talks in just gibberish ;p

Unpopular opinion - I actually find the Minions to be kind of funny. Not funny enough to support a series of movies, but not entirely offensive either.

I'll see myself out (grabs hat & overcoat)

@YusseiWarrior3000 I agree, he shouldn't blame himself. It's the parents fault for taking him in the first place!
