@N00BiSH not sure if I can post external links here, but you can find it on Spectrebull YouTube channel, as he is someone who really shares my thoughts on The Game Awards.
@Anthony1192 That’s interesting, actually, Nintendo games are always reserved for that family category all the time, and it does seem like at times that triple-A games are only considered for GOTY instead of Nintendo games or double-A games. I also don’t think I’ll be watching TGA this year, but its mainly because I find the shows to be kind of underwhelming and just a gigantic big commercial that don’t honor the hard work people put into developing games, as well as that weird decision they made that now includes DLC and game seasons eligible for all categories when they should have just made a special category for the best game seasons, DLC, and remaster.

If you are curious, my favorite game of all time is Conker’s Bad Fur Day and I can’t shut up about it.
when in my point of view Super Mario Bros. Wonder was more than worthy to be part of GOTY but it wasn't due to recent nominations being what I like to call "interactive movies".
I mean, Mario Wonder was nominated for GotY. Sure, it lost but I was pretty happy both it and Zelda were amongst the nominations. Baldur's Gate won but it was also the highest-reviewing game in 2023 so that wasn't surprising. Although I generally agree there is a bias towards certain types of games, I'm hoping Astro Bot wins this year because it deserves it and is the best reviewed non-DLC, despite being a family-friendly platformer.
Honestly, the thing that bugs me is how inconsistent and clumsy the show can be. Don't get me wrong, I get that a lot of things go into a production like this, things happen. Sometimes there are some elements that aren't executed as well as they were planned. But the way some of the things are handled are just so...messy. "People were upset by how long some of the speech's went? Well, let's just fix that by basically giving next to no room for speech's at all." "People like the announcements, huh? Well, why don't we just fast-forward some of the awards so we can get to them and the ad breaks." As someone who's casually tuned into the Oscars for the past couple years, I'm aware that award shows are no strangers to shoddy productions. But when you have so many talented creators and actually meaningful awards rushed out of the way for ads, as well as everything else that TGA's is notorious for, it just makes things feels so...yuck, you know? Sorry if this comes across as a ramble, it's more just words to put out into the universe. It'd just be nice to have an award show that actually took time to ensure that there were fun reveals, as well as treat creators with respect, rather than treat it like a red-carpet Hollywood premiere. We don't need all these celebrity appearances guys, that's not what we're here for. Oh well, I'm far from the first (and the last) person who's complained about this show, and at this point this is all just wishful thinking, so I'll leave it at that.
@Novamii Although I personally usually find all awards shows kinda boring (I just want to know the winners 😆 ), I do find it a little sad how unprofessional Game Awards is compared to other major awards shows. Nowadays games are a bigger part of the economy than movies, etc., but they are treated much less seriously.
I don't think anyone would argue that the current format: 90% game trailers, 5% performances, 5% actual awards, is the right mix.
Vast majority also turned off by "DLC can be game of the year now". Biggest problem with this (that some can't wrap their head around for some reason) is that a game can basically be nominated and win stretching out multiple years.
"Hamilton" won Best Broadway Musical at the Tonys in 2016. If they then added a song, should it be up for Best Musical in 2017 too? This is foolish.
We often refer to game awards by their year. 2017? "That was Breath of the Wild's year".
So now we're going to say "2022? That was......one of.....Elden Ring's years"?
But it's all we have. And as an award show junkie, I still find it fun.
@FishyS
I find most awards shows fairly bland and uninteresting. They're either popularity awards, and what's popular rarely aligns with what's good, or it's some kind of insider self congratulatory thing where it's given to whoever has the most connections
I'd appreciate a true critics award if it was to exist. And it does exist in some media. But for gaming even there it's rough because, to be blunt, gaming journalism itself is a bit of a self congratulatory circle jerk. Not every publication but it's enough of it to ruin the aggregate

An opinion is only respectable if it can be defended. Respect people, not opinions
More serious awards exist in the shape of the BAFTAs and the DICE awards and, honestly, I'd think they're the ones that the developers really want to win because they are being judged by their peers for them.
They just don't have the traction that the Game Awards does in an industry that's still rather more keen on hype than it is on excellence.
Oh yeah, still speaking about award shows, I agree that they tend to be bland and unfunny, and it’s not just The Game Awards. I remember watching an Oscars presentation with my grandma a few years ago and it was unfunny and felt like it focused too much on comedy than the actual talent and work people put into making movies. The Game Awards feel the same way too…just a show that tries to be funny, commercial, and doesn’t seem to honor the hard work and talent that individuals put in their games. It also seems like the shows only nominate and award what is the most popular instead of having a good mix of big and smaller games. It also does seem unfortunate that more serious and less commercialized award shows are overshadowed by ones that are unserious and care more about hype and commercials. I don’t really watch game award shows anymore and all I do is read headlines afterward. Though, one thing the show does well is the musical performances.

I'm feeling event drought at the moment, mostly as a result of Nintendo not doing their annual September general Direct so I'm kind of excited for the Game Awards this year in the sense that I get to watch an event.
I do hope that people are right regarding the theory of Sony having a State of Play/Showcase in December to celebrate 30 years of Playstation.
Seriously, I'd think that this one's between Palworld and Wukong. They're the two biggest selling games of this year, I believe, and they both pretty much came out of nowhere. The Palworld fanbase might just be a little bit more riled up at the moment, so I'll go with that one as my guess.
Wow, a bit surprised Sonic X Shadow Generations didn’t move onto the next round, I would have thought it would given that it was popular with the fans, same for Persona 3 Reload and Astro Bot. I’m not shocked that the two Mihoyo/Hoyoverse games got to round 2. I wouldn’t be surprised if Genshin won the award again.
Also, is it just me, or does Player’s Voice seem like a popularity contest? Not that there is anything wrong with the category or any of the games, but it seems more focused on game popularity compared to the other jury-voted categories.
Their page is such a broken mess that I'm surprised that it can even register votes at all.
Anyway, I'm not that surprised that Zelda didn't make the second round. Even though I thought the game an absolute gem myself, it's clearly being seen as a second tier effort for the franchise.
Palworld is still in the hunt though. It'd be funny if it wins but Nintendo go home empty handed. That said, Wukong seems to be the clear front runner. I can only imagine what the buzz is like on Chinese social media right now.
