OK, so I know you're all currently busy getting excited about Sonic 4 (me too ), but let's not forget that Sonic Classic Collection is coming out in March (for those who don't know, it's a collection of the first 4 Sonic titles for the DS, with extra new bits that they've stayed quiet about so far). I was just browsing the Sega site when I came across this screenshot on its page: Don't know about you, but that looks a lot like Knuckles /and/ Sonic in the same screen. Don't remember that happening on Mega Drive. Co-operative multiplayer, anyone? And, since it's Eggrobo they're fighting (or at least Knuckles is, Sonic's just eyeballing the advancing fence of doom and wondering when he's getting paid for all this) as opposed to Eggman, I'm gonna take a guess that if there is co-op multiplayer then you can choose to play Sonic's/Tails' or Knuckles' storyline. Sweet~
I saw this a few weeks ago and wondered exactly the same thing. Sonic certainly isn't there in S&K, and with this being on the official SEGA site it does appear to point towards co-op, which would be cool.
How would it work? In S3&K you had co-op with Sonic and Tails, but Tails would always end up off-screen. It wasn't great.
On a TV you only have 1 screen. On the DS you have 2 each. I wouldn't be suprised if one screen showed your position whilst the other showed Player 2's, or perhaps a map of the level which tracks both player's positions (or maybe all 3? Sonic, Tails and Knuckles at once, anyone? How about Amy for Player 4?). Given that the screenshot features the full HUD and is the correct dimensions for a single DS screen, I think we can rule out a Rush-style long-vertical screen size, so that other screen's gotta be used for something.
I don't know if i'll pick it up since i already have Sonic 1, 2 and 3 on Wii VC, it now all depends if Sonic & Knuckles becomes only available, What exclusive stuff will be in the game and how much it cost.
The ONLY way I'll buy this is if there are save states. I would love love LOVE it if they added world maps and proper progress saving for all of them, and if there is co-op then I really hope it supports Download Play. :3

The Sega site says "Optimised to take full advantage of the Nintendo DS™ system, Sonic Classic Collection will feature a new save anywhere feature," so you've got your save states
Back on the speculate-o-matic, you know what I'd love to see incorporated? Over on PlaySega there's a sweet custom level creation tool that lets you make Sonic 1 stages for people to play. How awesome would it be if they put that into Classic Collection? It's probably pretty unlikely, but still.
I ALWAYS wanted all the classic Sonic games on a handheld, so this is an instant-buy for me. Playing as Tails and Knuckles in Sonic 1 would be a VERY NICE bonus.
@Raylax: I see. There could be a 2 player mode where you race each other like in Sonic 2... Oooh and the one in Sonic 2 wouldn't have a squashed display because of the 2 screens!
"And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins." Matt. 1:21.
I'll get it for sure. Can you believe I've actually never played the original Genesis Sonic games? Just the GBA, DS, and GC/Wii ones. I know they're all on VC but this will be more convenient.
