I just got a 3ds (I skipped it and the WiiU cause I can) and am wondering what games I need to get first.
I’m open to most games but I’m not a huge fan of shooters. Please let me know what you think I should get first.

Mario Kart 7
Mario Kart 7
Mario Kart 7
Mario Kart 7
Mario Kart 7
That's my recommendation, anyway
I personally got the 3DS so I could play Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon.

Too bad, in Mario Kart 7 we cannot choose individual track for Versus Mode solo play.

Hiya, Anti! That's a good point if you only play single player. Although, online racing lets you pick tracks. Local wireless multiplayer does too, I believe. Most all my racing is online, or sometimes local wireless multiplayer with my nieces. If I want to race an individual track, I do time trials.

I loved racing the cups single player trying to get three star ranks on everything. But after that, I've mainly been online racing.

But you're right. They fixed that for Mario Kart 8. That's handy.

If you're a fan of RPGs/Strategy games, I HIGHLY recommend the 3DS Fire Emblem games.
Specifically Awakening and Echoes.

I’d strongly recommend Warioware Gold. It was one of the last big 3DS titles released but it’s super fun. You can kill a lot of time.

Ever Oasis, Rhythm Thief and Codename STEAM are proper over looked gems.

Luigi’s Mansion 1&2, Fire Emblem Awakening, Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor & 4, Super Mario 3D Land, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Street Fighter 4 and the N64 Zelda remakes are all top notch.

On the Eshop Shovel Knight, Steamworld Dig, Mighty Switch Force and Pushmo are all really good.

Pokémon.

There’s plenty to choose from. Basically every generation prior to 8 is playable in some way.

Luigis mansion is definitely one you should play. So is ocarina of time 3d, however majoras mask 3d isn't as good as the original. Warioware gold, I LOVE this series, and this one is great. This may sound weird, but there is a metal gear solid 3 3d, it's not bad. Shovel knight shouldn't be missed either. There's also tomadachi life, it's very, unique. And lastly, if you're interested, new super mario bros 2 is also great.

Others have mentioned plenty of great games, so I'll name a few that haven't come up yet.

Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past
Animal Crossing: New Leaf (I personally prefer it over New Horizons, more focused on laid back town life than NH's town building)
Kid Icarus Uprising
Kirby Triple Deluxe
Kirby Planet Robobot
Kirby's Extra Epic Yearn
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D
Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call
Metroid: Samus Returns
Metroid Prime: Federation Force (controversial because it wasn't Prime 4, it's a fun spin-off game with friends if you go in knowing it's very different from the others)
Dragon Ball Fusions
Fire Emblem Fates (Revelations isn't very good, but Conquest and Birthright are a lot of fun gameplay-wise if you ask me)
Xenoblade 3D (If you don't have a Switch anyway, Definitive Edition is by far the best way to play but 3D is still fun)

@Merry

1. Pokemon X/Y, OR/AS, S/M, US/UM
2. Castlevania Lords of Shadow Mirror of Fate
3. Metroid Samus Returns
4. The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask
5. Heroes of Ruin
6. The Legend of Zelda Link Between Worlds

I'll mention some singleplayer games I played and really enjoyed, and think it's worth playing nowadays:

Metroid: Samus Returns
The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time 3D
The Legend of Zelda A Link Between Worlds
Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D
Super Mario 3D Land
Fire Emblem Awakening
Bravely Default
Ace Attorney series
Resident Evil Revelations

I also played A LOT of Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, Pokémon X, Mario Kart 7 and Super Smash Bros, but those are games best enjoyed in multiplayer. Of course the platform has many other titles worth checking it out! But unfortunately I also missed several

I think if I would have to pick just one game that represents the hardware like really well and shows all the neat features it has and works great as a starting point for console's library then I'd say it's probably Super Mario 3d Land.

And then from this point I'd move on to other things on the table. Like Kid Icarus, and Luigi's Mansion, and Animal Crossing, and 3d Zelda's remakes (OoT/MM), etc etc.
