Hi everyone, I recently purchased a nintendo switch OLED model, and I LOVE IT! The screen is beautiful, joycons are - joycons (good, but the stick drift is annoying). I have a pro controller, mario wonder, mario kart 8 deluxe, mario maker and cuphead. Anything else I should get? Tips? Accesories to get? Especially games!

@MarioMan97 Mario Odyssey, Splatoon 3.

If you have time to invest in games, Breath of the Wild (weapons break, but you do have infinite bombs in BOTW. I hesitate to recommend BOTW & Tears of the Kingdom, because there's a lot of resource hunting in these games and they're a big time suck, but they are amazing games), Hogwarts Legacy (I'm having a great time with Hogwarts on the Switch, but if you have xbox or playstation, it's better on there).

If you missed Zelda Skyward Sword, that's on the Switch too.

Get yourself a SanDisk SD memory card, size depending on how much you want to spend, you'll want that extra space sooner than later. I went for a 1 TB and it feels great knowing I don't have to worry about space management basically ever again.

Set up your games wishlist at DekuDeals so you'll be emailed whenever any game you have on it goes on sale, and each game listing comes with an easy-to-read chart showing how often, and how much, it goes down in price for smarter shopping. It has a pretty solid recommendation page, too, based on your individual collection-list/wishlist.

I'm a big fan of collection sets, like Contra, Castlevania, Street Fighter, Mega Man, etc. I think Mario Odyssey would be a great buy, it's a huge and very-well-made game.

What kind of games have you enjoyed in the past? Here is my collection of games that I've accumlated over the last few years, maybe it'll jog some interest

Personally, I think a base-level NSO subscription is worth it, so you have access to NES, SNES, and Game Boy libraries.

I would definitely get a memory card, and what I’ve been doing is getting a game from each franchise. I only have fire emblem and 3D Mario and Arms to try. My favorite games over the years ( I got my switch mid 2022) have been Splatoon 3 (good all rounder), animal crossing new horizons (good cozy game) and Metroid prime (magical adventure). I’m currently getting thorough Xenoblade 3, which I highly recommend if you don’t mind 30 minute cutscenes.

Taylor from Blank Space was my old pfp if anyone gets confused. this is tay from he latest album

Screen Protector and memory card are a must. I have joycon protectors on mine but they aren't dealbreakers (my joycons are limited edition so I am paranoid).

Bye a gulikit and larn how to replace the joysticks, you won't have drift for the rest of its life if you do this (But be careful while doing it, watch a few videos first!)

Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

@MarioMan97 Looks like no one's mentioned Super Mario 3D World... until this post of mine! If you never had it on the Wii U, that's another game you should check out. It might just be my favorite Mario game, and the Switch version also comes with a side game called Bowser's Fury.

I'll also mention the Booster Course Pass DLC for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. If you enjoy that game, the DLC is well worth checking out since it doubles the amount of courses. Super Mario Odyssey, Splatoon 3, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons are good choices, too. (New Horizons also has DLC in the form of Happy Home Paradise, if you liked that game.) Same with the Zelda games, especially Breath of the Wild, and its sequel, Tears of the Kingdom. If you're in the mood for a shorter Zelda game though, there's the Link's Awakening remake which is really good. It does have some framerate issues, but it doesn't break the game at all. Hope this helped!

@MarioMan97 Excellent.

Hori Split Pad Pro, or similar. Mine stay on pretty much all the time now.

Terror of Hemasaurus; Burnout Paradise (until they remaster Burnout Revenge); A Short Hike; Doom I and II; Link’s Awakening; Super Blood Hockey; West of Loathing.

@MarioMan97 I might get shot for this... but I would genuinely recommend the 'Nintendo Switch Online' subscription (highest tier).
The back catalogue of games is a real love letter to Nintendo history, and you get access to the majority of classic Mario (original NES - - > Mario 64) + classic Zelda (inc. Ocarina and Majora) + classic Metroid (Super + Fusion) alongside other greats like Starfox (inc. Starfox 64!) and various Mario spin-offs like Mario Party, Tennis, Dr Mario etc etc

Also gives you online play and cloud saves, IMO actually a better deal than it ha ever been. I know there is a huge debate about "not ever really owning these games".... but honestly, does anyone really own anything anymore lol?! It is a great catalogue of games, conveniently at your fingertips - so many classics

As others have said: DekuDeals is an essential website for getting game deals. If you wishlist it, it tells you if a game goes on sale, either physically at any of the big online retailers, or digitally on the eshop. You can also keep track of your collection there as well. I like to sort deals by "sale end date", and with a minimum MetaCritic score of "80", so now I can check out all the highly rated games whose sales are ending imminently.

I also check Nintendo.com's "Sales & Deals" page and use their wishlist as well, for games that aren't available physically.

Accessory-wise, if you want to have a party you'll need lots of joycon controllers, and grips for them as well. And you'll need joy-con chargers. I have one that fits 4 joycon, and another that fits 2 and a pro controller. If you're into retro games, you might want the NSO NES controller pair, the SNES controller, Genesis controller and/or the N64 controller. If you're into fighting games, or just really want a proper arcade joystick, you'll want the 8Bitdo Arcade Stick, works with PC games as well.

For games, MetaCritic is a good guide: https://www.metacritic.com/browse/game/nintendo-switch/all/al...
That will show you all Switch games sorted by MetaCritic score.
Another option is DekuDeals, you can sort by "Most Owned", to find the most popular Switch games as voted by people's wallets!

If you like more mature games I highly recommend Alien: isolation and Nier Automata, two amazing games that look fantastic on the Switch.

@CJD87 Not from me you wouldn't! All 3 of my 'most played' from 2023 were from NSO! N64, GB, and SNES. Lots of good ones last year I got a lot out of. Plus, I only pay 10 pounds a year as part of a family group formed here on Nintendo Life.

OP - Have to 2nd getting NSO if you like classic games. I would suggest posting in these forums to try and form/join a family group if you can though. As for other games...I do recommend Kirby And The Forgotten Land. That sounds like it might fit based on the games that you do have.

I second the recommendation of getting a screen protector and a good sd card. A nice carry case doesn’t hurt either.

All the joycon protectors I’ve used left permanent marks on my joycon so your mileage might vary on those.

If multiple people are going to play your Switch, have a think about profiles. My son decided to create two profiles, I didn't think anything of it and now it may be a hassle getting his game data onto his own switch when I get him one.

Hori Split Pad Pro for sure! Memory card, obviously.

And then, any game you like, really. There are way too many to name, and I don't know your gaming tastes, but there are plenty of really good games out there.

@MarioMan97 GOOD screen temper glass protector
Get 1tb microSD card and create a Nintendo account and if need Cloud get a NSO subscription this will save your game data execpet ACNH unless you did the update to have this feature cloud save but a few don't cloud save so be mindful of this as well.

@MarioMan97 Kind of excited to actually see a new Switch owner still getting Mario Maker. Best game on Switch in my opinion and very under-rated.

There is a thread to share levels on this site if you are interested: https://www.nintendolife.com/forums/nintendo-switch/super_mar...

In terms of games you should buy, I would add Kirby and the Forgotten Lands. Not the hardest of games, but really well made and fun. Plus probably a little harder than Mario Wonder to 100%. There are also zillions of great Indie Platformers if you don't mind digital-only games. Some go on insanely low sales. Pretty much no matter what sub-genres of Platformers you like, there are great ones. True of most other genres too actually, but I noticed your current list is mostly platformers.
