I've honestly found that the audience score (rotten tomatoes) and user score (metacritic) most of the time reflects if I would enjoy a movie/game or not. So I have no complaints here. I ignore the critic scores now because they're heavily influenced by agendas and politics.

The only thing I would change would be to have some form of system in place to ensure that only people who have actually watched/played something are able to leave a review. This would go a long way to stop political bias coming in to try and sway a score.

For movie user reviews, RottenTomatoes now has a "Verified Ratings/Verified Audience" score, made up of only people who actually bought tickets for theatre in the U.S. Unfortunately, there's nothing like this for streaming movies/shows. I think RottenTomatoes instituted this after the review bombing for "Captain Marvel" (i.e. "Eww a powerful woman!?!? ONE STAR!!!")

For PC games, Steam user ratings are all by verified owners I believe. I think you can toggle that on GOG, I might be wrong.

Anyone who rates anything that they haven't personally experience sucks. Like people who "5-star" books on GoodReads for books that haven't even been published yet. A lot of people do that.

What about not watching/playing all of the movie/game?

I can't be arsed to give things ratings however there has been a few times where long before the end I just wont bother with it anymore and still be very comfortable calling it rubbish. The last Pokemon game I sold way before I got to the end as I didn't want to waste my time on it anymore and I felt a strong sense of wanting to kill myself if I watched anymore of The Greatest Showman so I turned it off, the off button really saved me life!

@jump Out of curiosity was the Pokemon game you didn't get to the end of Violet/Scarlet? Because the ending arc of the main game was approximately 100 times better than all the previous parts of the game. I definitely would have rated it lower if not for that part of the game.

That said, I personally try to finish games before I review them for some reasonable definition of 'finish' but if it's a super long game or if you have a very strong opinion early-medium on, I think it's justified to rate it early. Since movies are much shorter, I tend not to rate them unless I watch the whole thing, but I can understand how the same argument would apply; clearly if a movie can't hold your attention that is a big negative. Written reviews would of course mention the 'didn't finish' part which is why written reviews are better than just scores.

I would say you should at least have played/watched a decent chunk before a review is warranted; anyone who watches 5 minutes of a movie and gives up can't really comment on the movie's quality besides the fact that they disliked one small part at a visceral level.

Unrelatedly, I don't always trust steam scores even if they are verified; I feel like people rate some awful steam games super high just for the memes. Either that or they are all 50 extended family members of the game dev.

@FishyS Yeah it was Violet. It just felt like junk was poured into areas so I became very uninterested in the world itself especially after it felt like a downgrade to what Legends was doing and more importantly I wasn't enjoying it. I did a few gyms and some other bits but I can't remember how far I got into it though.

I got maybe 30+ mins into The Greatest Showman. Less to do with declaring films the bestest or the worstest but with some films you can get a sense of tone right away to know if you're not gonna like it or not. I've also become very good at predicting the ends of movies incredibly early on with seems to correlates with how much I like it or not, if they aren't putting that much effort into the film's plot then they have not put that much effort into the film in general it seems.

@FawfulsFury Where did I say that those movies were good? I was baffled by them saying that they are bad because of "politics". The "politics" justification is the thing I was questioning.

jowy_sw

jowy_sw

@jump Oh, so THAT is what they mean by "politics". Didn't know the US Congress sessions were badly written CGI action movies tho. I feel very cultured today.

@deafdood What is YOUR definition of "politics" and "agendas"? It seems everyone has one definition of that nowadays.

@jump it's a pity you couldn't play the last area of Violet which was actually well constructed instead of random junk and had a really good plot and tone. But I understand not wanting to wade through 40 hours of stuff to get there. Even with the great ending of Violet, Arceus is the superior game, although Arceus could have easily done amazing things with the plot/tone and just sort of chose not to. The whole 'main character is not allowed to speak or have a personality' definitely hurt the rpg aspects at the end.

There is the general idea that people remember/focus on the start, end and 'peak' of things most. That has the funny effect that the same person might review a game or movie very differently depending on how far they got; even if they hated half of it, they might conveniently forget that if they liked the end enough. Of course all parts should ideally be in the review/score, but it's hard not to be biased by whatever your strongest memory is.

@FishyS My favourite part of Pokemon has always been building a team for meta fighting so maybe if I got to that I would have enjoyed it more but I really just wanted to stop playing it.

My main problem with the story of Legends was that God sneaked into a kids bedroom, kidnapped a child and then never returned them home. Eww!

Fun fact: Chain Echoes is being reviewed bombed right now on Metacritic according to its devs and even they seemed confused about the reason (maybe it's localization options?).
It seems Metacritic cleaned up the reviews by now.

That sounds like it has the makings of a Frost/Nixon type film!

Mabe it's because it's such a generic name. I've always fancied writing reviews based purely on the name.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, this name sucks! It's Vs not V. Why does it have a tacky subtitle and there's no mention of Wonder Woman on it too.

Ant Man And the Wasp: Quantumania, I know they are trying to avoid calling it either Ant Man 3 or Ant Man And The Wasp 2 but this name is silly and it doesn't even fit on the matinee of the cinema.

The Man Who Killed Hitler And Then The Bigfoot, best name ever! It tells me exactly what I need to know and why I should watch it!

Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas, Tim Burton didn't direct it you liars!

@jump I mean... the name is nothing amazing but judging the game based on name is probably not the best way to review it.
Just another example of review bombing for weird reasons. It's not even because of "politics" this time since the game does not have bad CGI or generic superhero stories.

Edit: Also, extra points for knowing that Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas is false advertising. And for recomending The Man Who Killed Hitler And Then The Bigfoot, I don't know how good it is but the name couldn't be better.

I'm sure that The Piano was released somewhere with a title that translates as, "Wh***! I will cut off your finger!" Kinda spoils the film I would've thought!

@Rambler it sounds more appealing though, the problem with dramas are they always sound boring so no one is willing to watch them but this will grab people’s attention.

@jowe_gv it’s an enjoyable enough film. Spoilers Sam Elliot plays a man who kills Hitler and then Bigfoot. It’s surprisingly fairly serious, based on the premise alone I thought it was gonna be fun and wacky like Bubba Ho Temp where Elvis who never died now lives in a retirement home and fights mummies.

Nothing wrong with that. If I have an allergic reaction to the first episode or two of a TV series, I rate it before never watching any more. You gave it a go, it wasn't for you.

But some people rate movies after only watching the trailers/etc. or go on downvoting campaigns because an app alerted them that a list of movies/shows has political leanings they don't share.

I would never review bomb especially based on a name, but I admit I kind of wanted to as soon as I saw various daylife advertised.

I will take talk of Marvel films being called political once they can legit threaten to start a World War like The Interview!
