Pretty sure it’s the menu select theme from 64.

Huh: TTYD Remake just got rated by the South Korean rating committee, suggesting that it might be out much sooner than anticipated.

To be completely honest, for as utterly ecstatic as I am for TTYD to come out, I kind of want them to release it around about Summer 2024 purely so that I'm not swamped by both my backlog and the list of games I want that are also coming out in early 2024 XD

@Fizza I was originally thinking July given July 2004 was the original GCN release and 8 months feels like a decent gap between Super Mario RPG and TTYD (they're both traditional Mario RPGs so would be best to have them not too close together).

But this rating makes me think they could be pulling a Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition and going for a April/May release (XCDE ended the September 2019 Direct with a vague "2020" release window which turned out to be May 2020). I guess it makes sense if their goal to get all the Switch stuff out of the way before going all out with Switch 2 hype cycle.

That's right. Q2 isn't unreasonable, but I see Q3 or Q4 2024 as a lot more likely.
If they release in July, they will match 20 years to the release month in Japan. If they wait until October, that would be the North American release month from 2004.

I loved Super Paper Mario on Wii but I didnt like Origami King at all (had trouble finishing it). Should I be interested in this?

I played the GameCube version and the character development was really standard JRPG games.
The Battle system really basic Turn Based style without gimmick like Origami King (allign the enemies into one row) so you will find the Battle flow quickly.
I have never played TTYD before but I got the GameCube version 3 months ago and it was pretty decent Turn based JRPG game.
I said decent since I have never played TTYD before but if I compared with other Turn based JRPG game like Final Fantasy X, I personally prefer FF X over than TTYD.

@toiletduck If you have NSO Expansion Pack, give the N64 Paper Mario a try. There's 3 groups of Paper Mario games: 64/TTYD, SPM, CS/OK (Sticker Star technically fits in the CS/OK category but it's a very bad indicator of whether you'd like the other 2)

I played parts of Thousands Year Door at a relatives house, but never the whole thing so although I remember it being fun I don't particularly have nostalgia for it. I'm not sure if I'm going to feel the need for another Mario RPG game so soon after Super Mario RPG. Honestly, although it feels weird for me to say, between Wonder, RPG remake and Peach game all out in the same 6 months, I kind of feel like I have enough Mario-universe games for awhile. So although a part of me feels like I "should" desperately want Thousands Year Door, another is kind of "no thanks".

I mean, I'm sure I'll get it someday (unless Switch 2 comes out and overloads us with games) but it's unusual for me to not want Mario games ASAP.

If you have the expansion pack you can try Paper Mario 64. It’s the only game in the series with the same gameplay as TTYD.

@toiletduck If you liked super paper mario for the variety and crazy postmodern stuff this will probably be up your alley but if you simply cannot stand turn based combat it probably isn't for you

Thanks guys. I don't have (and won't get) NSO. I don't play online at all and I don't need the retro games. I'll look into some gameplay videos then and figure out if I'll like it.

If you can’t play the first game, a let’s play might be a good way to at least get an indication if you like the game. Chuggaconroy has an amazing Paper Mario 64 one. He also has a TTYD one, but it is old and, imo, hard to watch because he was still figuring out how to do let’s plays effectively. Sullypwnz has an okay let’s play of both games, but he’s not the most interesting commentator.

Edit: Forgot to mention Bug Fables. It’s made in the same exact style as TTYD and is honestly better imo. It’s only $25 on every platform and may go on sale for Black Friday.

How frustrating is this game to play?

I've played Paper Mario Color Splash and I loved the style and humor but HATED the game mechanic. In the beginning I liked the various cards because they were fun and some were funny. After awhile, I started running away from enemies because I didn't want to get sucked into the turn-based game mechanic again. I strongly wish I could just bash them with the color hammer 100% of the time, zero turn mechanic.

I also have Origami King but have not played it yet, for the same reason.

I watched a bit of a walkthrough video on this game and it seemed like they were avoiding enemies too...

@Dreamliner it’s a more traditional RPG. Moves are not restricted to cards in your inventory (because there’s no such thing), and battles give you experience points that make Mario grow stronger the more you battle.

You can very much still avoid battles if you want, but they’re different in the sense that you actually do get something out of them, and you don’t need to worry about running out of offensive moves.

@Eel Hmm. I'm not a huge fan of RPG games, in fact, it took less than 10 seconds of game footage to decide NOT to get Super Mario RPG, for example.

I just love the style of the Paper Mario games. Maybe they're not for me I guess.

Eel

@Dreamliner ah then you’re better off just playing Origami King instead.

It’s not exactly a traditional RPG, and you also don’t have to worry about cards. Plus it has the most paper out of all the paper Marios.

@Eel Maybe I'll have to crack that one open and try it. I stayed away from Rabbids, too.

My favorite games on Nintendo are Mario and I like the NSMB games best and SM3DLand/World after that (actually, maybe it's the other way around. Hard to tell). I liked Odyssey but SM3DL/W better. Haven't played Wonder yet, but I'm sure I'll like it.

Thanks!

So this and World of Goo 2 are coming out the same month. Which means I'll actually buy 2 games in one month that both came out that same month. Like I think the only other time that might've happened was with Metroid Dread and Mario Party Superstars during the entire Switch generation.

Though I'll probably take a while to play it, since I just beat SMRPG remake recently and who knows when we'll get a 3rd Mario RPG release to enjoy.

Oh so this comes out on the 23rd of May?

Well that’s mighty convenient! Just days before my birthday. Guess it was meant to be.
