Those who have partaken in a Time Warp or two may not have assumed that The Rocky Horror Show was begging for the pixel platformer treatment. But it's happened, it's on the eShop, and it looks... not bad?
Developed by FreakZone Games, the fittingly titled The Rocky Horror Show Video Game is now available to download for £7.99 / $9.99 (there's even a 10% discount on it at the moment), promising retro platforming thrills with a simple pixel art style. It may not be the way we're used to seeing Brad Majors and Janet Weiss' run-in with Frank-N-Furter, but it certainly has this Rocky fan shivering with antici... pation.
With infinite retries and chiptune renditions of the musical's iconic soundtrack, there's room for this to be an interesting way to do the Time Warp again, even if it is more likely to appeal to fans of the cult classic than anyone out for a new platformer.
You'll find a rundown of the game's features and a couple of screenshots below:

Much cheaper than I expected, I leapt on this like Frank-N-Furter on Bread... I mean Brad. Thanks for the heads up!
Let’s browse the eshop again….
Certainly didn't see this coming, but if it really is an overall not bad if not straight up good platformer like it seems to be then I'll eventually get it for sure!
I REMEMBER…. Doing the pipe warp..
Love the film and hmm, might have to bend for this one as definately will not be getting a physical.
I hope they got permission from Richard O'Brien.
If not i might have to jump on it before it gets taken down
“ chiptune renditions of the musical's iconic soundtrack”
This is really all I needed to know. I just hope it’s every song 🤞
@Mario_maniac please let us know what you think. I just got the Halloween and evil dead games so I want to double check the quality of Rocky before jumping in to more platformers. Lol.
Just the chiptunes alone are worth it. Seen a lot of especially young queer people talking about how this film’s aged and sure, it has in a lot of areas but oh boy did it open a lot of doors for people in a very different time. And the songs are great!
I’ve been waiting for this with great antici…………….
pation.🫦😆
Is this even an official licensed game? The movie was called the rocky horror picture show
Yeah, why isn't PICTURE in the title?
Edit: it would seem that the PICTURE-less title is used for stage/musical versions and was first! TMYK! This allows them to be more generic with the character art, too...
@AG_Awesome It seems fairly easy so far, there's no life system as far as I can see which I appreciate... however I just came across the third boss and unless I'm missing something here, he's unbeatable (edit: he's beatable, see below).
Soundtrack's great (Columbia's tap solo even gets the limelight); the "anticipation" scene has an amazing twist; there are links to Castlevania, SMB2, and Ghosts 'n Goblins.
But the random skeleton and spiked-ball enemies are strangers to the story (the balls are brought up at least and I smirked); it's almost a little too easy; and boss fights begin with no warning. What you think is going to be a cutscene? Nah, fight that Transylvanian.
Oh! And I've died a couple of times now during cutscenes, I assume the second time because I was standing on an item that could be picked up when Janet spawned from Brad. Not awful considering it's a simple enough game but it needs work.
^ Further testing on the above, any prompts pressed (immediately, wait a few seconds and it seems fine) after beating Rocky sends Brad and Janet down to death. I assume this is the same for any cutscene situation. If you beat a boss, stop moving on the last throw otherwise you might have to repeat it. Further, when I got to play as Janet there was a point at the end of her stage where if I was holding an item when I came across the end-goal character, I'd again die. It's very finnicky, don't hold anything nor jump too much at the end of the stage, but how are we meant to know when that is without trial and error?
The cheap price has justified it for now but the glitches need to be stamped out.
@stevep It was a stage show first, called The Rocky Horror Show.
There seems to always be something new in the gaming world that makes me smile.
@Mario_maniac Lol. That sounds amazing! I just bought it and will play soon. I jumped on YouTube to see if anyone had a play through and found one. I skipped through it like every 10-15 min just to peep at a few seconds at a time (even that little bit I kinda wish I didn’t so I could be surprised). Looked very fun but I stopped to avoid spoilers of everything. Lol.
I will say that person seemed to have got through the game though so maybe the part you’re stuck in you can check their vid to see if it’s truly broken or if you’re just missing something.
I don’t know if it’s good but it’s a must buy. The chip tune version of the songs… that alone makes it something I need to experience.
@AG_Awesome Ah I just found the vid you're talking about I reckon, and the solution makes sense but the throwable red herrings caught me. They struggled in that part as well at least. I'll go try it out and edit my original comment again if I beat him, ta! Enjoy the game regardless, it seems like a bit of fun.
Edit: Ha! I found a way to cheese that boss. Throw the three items from the just-prior boss down to the freezer area, build a wall, and block that boss 'til the timer does its thing. See below link for example, but yeah, the game's a bit chaotic but that's exactly what Rocky Horror is, I'm enjoying it.

I might pick this up if it comes in a bundle. I always love a good science fiction double feature.
Love that even though this isn't going for a pitch-perfect movie adaptation or anything, they still went and made Frank-N-Furter look just like Tim Curry — the definitive version of the character.
Fun fact about Richard O'Brien, who created Rocky Horror and wrote all the music, as well as portrayed the character Riff Raff: he is probably more well known to younger audiences as the voice of Ferb's dad on the Disney Channel cartoon Phineas and Ferb.
Great! Love the music and I will be surely getting this!
Yer and I'm a sweet transvestite from transylvania. Joke of course I check out e shop see if I'm interested.
Love this movie and will be checking it out
Unexpected but most definitely not unwanted!! Looks great, will get later in week. I loved the film and the live show, saw some interesting dresswear at that.
Now, give me Seymore and a plant that needs feeding to go along with this game! Which, with the thought of pixel plants, randomly reminds me of something long forgotten, how much I longed for a Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors game to come to the NES when I was younger
I really need to do my research on The Rocky Horror Show. Too many people have told me that it is gold and I've only seen glimpses of it.
@MeloMan If you see it, see it in theaters. People throw things at the screen, dress up, etc.
The music is amazing in the trailer
@Bunkerneath yep it's official!
Snapped this up so fast!! Really enjoying it. It's only a short game but definitely worth it for the soundtrack alone.
