Admittedly, we never dug the original Alien Hominid. First released on consoles in 2004, it had its fanbase, sure, but the Newgrounds art style, slack animation response, and aggravating rather than enjoyable difficulty curve just turned us off.
Enter Alien Hominid Invasion, a 2023 sequel that blasted out of nowhere, ready to appeal to existing fans, wherever they may be, and hopefully tractor-beam in some new ones. And, the change in direction and the overall execution of this sequel is pleasantly surprising. It no longer follows the typical run-and-gun format of the original, but instead goes for a multi-path map crawl, where stages act like giant arenas, and within those stages you’re tasked with fulfilling a series of mini-missions dished out at random.
A roguelite that scales in difficulty by bombarding with increasingly strong, more dangerous enemy varieties, it remains cleverly controlled even when the heat is turned up to melting. There are adjustable difficulty settings and options to keep weaponry after a death, and up to four players can get involved for a very enjoyable grand-melee, helping each other out as you decimate the surroundings. On defaults it's not overly difficult to get to grips with, and, once you have a handle on your alien’s myriad skills and the ability to apply a bit of reflex, the action is altogether less daunting. Now, you can double jump, fire downward for a height boost, invincible break roll on the ground or in the air, dig underground to hide from imminent danger, and hop onto the shoulders of friends and foes. You also gain lots of new weaponry and enhancements that can be applied between stages, and even unlock aesthetic augmentations for your little alien menace.
Graphically, it recalls some of that Newgrounds art style of the original (also now available on Switch in high-def form), but with an enormous overhaul. In full HD, the graphics are nicely defined, well-animated, and uniquely styled. The action is fraught, with missions popping up that involve, for example, collecting and depositing a certain number of newspapers, or dispatching six purple enemies. To fulfil missions, you follow arrows directing you to a specific area, but it's up to you to use each stage's unique apparatus as you please. All the while, you’re assailed by a monstrous number of enemies running, flying, and firing recklessly in your direction, creating a total barnyard maelstrom of lasers and explosions. You hop, flip, and demolish, making your way from one waypoint to the next, gunning above and gunning below, head bouncing, weaving, and rolling through the carnage. It's a taut, pressure-cooker tussle with you at the centre, regularly leaping out of the point of convergence for a moment to breathe, before inviting it to follow you in a sort of dance of destruction.
Alien Hominid Invasion's setup won't appeal to everyone. We were disappointed to find the mission objectives recycle far too often, and their random nature seems to rob the stages of any real individuality. But in terms of its handling, execution, and additions, Invasion feels much superior to the original. And, while ultimately repetitive, its chaos is fun for brief single and multiplayer arrangements, and we enjoyed dipping in for a quick bout of raucousness.

looking forward to playing this!
love the mini review format, btw. 👍
I'm holding out for physical. Castle Crashers ended up getting a physical edition, I know this one will too.
Gonna wait for a physical still, but aw man can't wait to play this.
Why did this one only get a mini-review?
I'm getting more convinced by the day I should by this.
I love The Behemoth and their games a lot so I'm very excited to get this eventually. I still have my copy of the original for Gamecube so I might sell my copy and get the HD bundle because the Gamecube version is selling for decently high right now lol
"We never dug the original Alien Hominid."
"turned us off"
Who is the "we" and "us" referring to? The entire NL staff?
@JackieCMarlow I was about to write that, it should be "I", or else written by multiple people.
@ButterCashier Using "we" is a common journalistic device to convey a team effort, or to express the viewpoint of a publication, or to maintain journalistic objectivity (so that a journalist can avoid inserting themselves into an article).
"but the Newgrounds art style...just turned us off."
Sorry, but there is no "Newgrounds art style." NG is, as their slogan says, everything by everyone, and there is a wide breadth of styles available on the site.
Additionally, while it admittedly is a bit crude by today's standards, I think that the original game's art still holds up. It's still snappily animated, has a clearly defined style, and has a charming look that does bring to mind a bygone era of the internet where Flash dominated. Bringing that up as a negative is bizarre to me.
I agree that the AH Invasion's art style looks objectively better, but dismissing the charm of the original visuals as just the "Newgrounds art style" immediately turned me off from reading the rest of the review. I think that's a gross oversimplification of both what Newgrounds truly represents and of the many, many artists who still post to NG every single day.
The wrong game got a sequel! We still fire up Castle Crashers after all these years!
I too would like a physical copy of this and alien hominid hd but who knows when or if that would happen. Just look at how long it took to get castle crashers physically. I may just get invasion for now and if they ever bring both out physical, I may pick that up.
Sheesh. I remember playing the first one on Newgrounds back when I was a kid. Definitely makes me feel a little older.
So "sheesh" seems to be making a comeback.
@PtM @Milton_Burle @ButterCashier @JackieCMarlow
As a couple of you pointed out, it's a format of the site's style guide. You won't find anyone writing "I" on any of the site's articles because in the event one did (as I once did when starting out) it will be corrected to "we" by the editor. If it helps, whenever you see a "we", it will be the opinion of the author unless multiple authors exist on an article.
@MH4
It's an opinion thing really. You think it holds up well, visually, but I could never stand it and still find it ugly. I agree 'Newgrounds style' is a bit blanket, but in a mini-review limited to 500 words a lot of concessions are made (and a lot of post draft cuts) and sometimes a simplistic exaggeration helps to paint a picture or make a point more quickly.
That said, "Newgrounds art-style" is still exact, because it's referring to a game that originated there, and therefore touted a "Newgrounds art style"!
@Tom-Massey I’ll give you that liking the style itself is an opinion thing and we can agree to disagree, but I still think “Newgrounds style” is a bit too blanket. I do understand and acknowledge the limitations of a mini-review, but surely there must have been a better wording that avoids the (in my opinion) negligent overgeneralization.
Ah well though, thank you for explaining your perspective. I’m very passionate about NG so I gotta defend it when the opportunity arises lol; sorry if I came across as rude in my original comment.
@MH4
Not at all! I'm happy to hear feedback of any kind, so no problem whatsoever. Every author has their own style and goes with what they think fits. Sometimes you might find a bit of 'negligent overgeneralisation' occurring in mini-reviews, particularly. I think my main goal here would have been, does the line:
"but the Newgrounds art style, slack animation response, and aggravating rather than enjoyable difficulty curve just turned us off"
Illustrate succinctly and clearly enough to the majority of readers what it is that I didn't appreciate about the former game? I have to be satisfied with it and move on at some point, else I could tinker with it all day against a pressing deadline!
It looks like they fixed the frame rate for this game in this release! Back when this came out I was so disappointed at how choppy it looked and played. Cool that they brought both Castle Crashers and this up to a normal old frame rate from decades ago, lol. I'm going to have to get this and see what I think of it!
Reads like a game that belongs on a Nintendo console. Madcap multiplayer fun is what I am partly seeing. I'll give it a DL further down the line when budget re-aligns and adjusts
@JackieCMarlow @ButterCashier
As Tom said, it's a journalistic convention that's been a part of NL for years now. You'll find it in all our news and review articles and most of our features, too — although Soapboxes and some Talking Points switch to singular. There are pros and cons to the plural, but it generally helps maintain a more cohesive reading experience across the site.
As a big fan of Castle Crashers, and with three kids who also like some multiplayer mayhem, this seems like a great fit.
I usually hate playing sequels without playing the prequel, but seeing your remarks on the first game, I might just do that just this once.
I absolutely loved the original on PS2. I think Dan Paladin's style is still fresh and fun. It does recall the Flash era, but only because that's when he came to prominence on Newgrounds.
I'm actually disappointed that they moved away from linear level-based gameplay for Invasion, but certainly will give it a shot at some point. I'm also really bummed that once again The Behemoth has left PlayStation players in the cold - we aren't getting either HD or Invasion.
I only have a Lite and I can't imagine playing Hominid on that, given how chaotic the games get.
Overall great review, definitely adding this to my Deku Deals wishlist!
By the way, there's a bundle which includes Invasion and the HD version of the original for only around €5 (and most likely in other currencies as well) more than the starting price of the former if you're interested in getting also the latter.
@FineLerv Castle crashers definitely could use a sequel. And it needs to shake up the gameplay so it doesn't devolve into jump + light attack, light attack, light attack, light attack, light attack, light attack, light attack........
I got this and the HD remake and like both. In my playtime they both seem to be locked at 60fps. They're snappy, responsive, and fun to play.
@MH4 Well I mean, it IS their opinion...
Reviews shouldn't cater to everyone's tastes otherwise what is the point?
@GOmar Although I did address the difference in opinion (and the author responded to this), my main point was regarding the wording “Newgrounds art style,” which I believe to be objectively incorrect (which the author has also responded to, explaining the understandable reasoning behind the wording).
I understand not everyone will like everything, but since the author was sharing their opinion, I figured I’d share mine too
@NotoriousWhiz Castle Crashers 2; Now with Medium Attack.
Very weird Alien Hominid gets a sequel, but when asked about a new Castle Crashers they said something along the lines of: 'we did all that they could do with the first game'. Wonder if this does well alongside the return to form of Beat 'Em Ups if they'd be willing to reconsider.
