
One of the most pleasant surprises of this month’s Partner Direct was the reveal and shadow drop of the Super Bomberman Collection, a compilation of some of the eponymous hero’s earliest games with some extra goodies thrown in. Though it’s ultimately little more than the sum of its parts, Super Bomberman Collection does a great job of presenting these timeless games in their best possible light. If you’re looking for a great game to play with others for some excellent competitive couch multiplayer, read on.
So, let’s run through what’s included here. The headlining games are Super Bomberman 1-5 for the SNES, the latter three of which never even saw an official release in the US, while the first two NES Bomberman games and some boss rush modes are included on the side as fun extras. Additionally, there’s some cool museum content on display between an art gallery, music player, and original scans of the boxes and instruction manuals. It's a comprehensive and content-rich package; retro collections like these are increasingly more common these days, but you don’t always see developers going the extra mile to include as much as Red Art Games did here.

Gameplay across all five of the SNES titles is roughly the same, with more features and gimmicks as you move through each sequel. If you’re playing in single player, the aim is typically to navigate the mazes and either trip switches or defeat all enemies on-screen by dropping bombs at intersections that send fiery might in every orthogonal direction. With each blast, more breakable walls fall away and leave more of the field open, and if you happen to get caught in a blast, Bomberman goes down.
It can be very easy to not realise until it’s too late that you didn’t leave yourself an exit after dropping a bomb, and there’s something delightfully thrilling about tensely tracking the movements of Bomberman, enemies on the field, and various hazards as you try to navigate safely while knocking everyone else out. These single-player modes are fine, but it doesn’t take too long before the maps start to get a little repetitive and samey. Plus, there’s just something about the generally slower pace of these levels that makes them feel more like training for the real game that picks up when you have some friends nearby.

Multiplayer is where the compilation really shines, pitting you and up to four other friends against each other in a brutal contest to be the last one standing. Balancing careful strategy with quick skill is necessary to win a given match, as you plot out how to box your foes in without accidentally blowing yourself up in the process. There’s something about the snappy nature of a two-minute battle, fighting for control of power-ups and scurrying away from bomb blasts left and right, that gets the blood pumping. Every match begins roughly the same, but it rapidly gets much more dynamic as the powerups keep accruing and opponents start finding increasingly more aggressive ways to corral each other into an early death.
It'd be enough fun on just “The Classic” map, but different stages add all sorts of new gimmicks, such as an ice level where cracks in the ice can destroy backtracking routes or a mining stage where mine carts allow players to zip around to different points. These go a long way in adding variety to the gameplay without distracting too much from the core mechanics, heaping on lots more replayability and naturally leading to the emergence of some favourites with a given friend or family group.
I think the real brilliance of Bomberman lies in the genius of its simplicity; although the power-ups and environmental gimmicks add some welcome depth, anyone can pick it up and learn how to play in a matter of minutes due to the simple controls and concept. This makes it a very easy party game to break out when others are over, and it doesn’t take long for things to get joyously competitive in all the best ways.

Yet, the main drawback with the multiplayer is that there’s a puzzling lack of a native online component. which feels like something that would’ve been relatively easy to implement here and would’ve gone a long way in adding to the replayability. The main caveat to this is the Switch 2 version has GameShare functionality, which allows you to play online if you set up a GameChat room with friends, but this feels like a hokey way of implementing something of that should be simpler.
This being an emulated collection, Red Art also saw fit to include some welcome quality-of-life updates to present these games in their best possible light. Not only do you have an array of display options such as different borders and screen filters, but there’s also support for save states and an easily toggled rewind feature. The save states help to get around the somewhat antiquated password system for marking progress through each story mode, while dropping a bomb in the wrong spot is now something you can cleanly erase by just holding down a button to rewind time a few seconds back for a do-over.

And though it’s certainly not the main draw of the experience, I want to point out the special attention that went into the museum content. Little touches like being able to ‘unbox’ each game and see a render of its original cartridge alongside the original box show how much the developers cared about small details. Plus, it’s really fun seeing all the handmade concept art from around the time each game launched. Game preservation is a big point of discussion these days with many games at risk of becoming lost media, and I think supplementary content like this museum is an important part of ensuring that future generations can receive these games, too.
One topic that bears discussion is the (few) upgrades you get with the Switch 2 Edition. Alongside the aforementioned GameShare functionality, the expected resolution bump is pretty forgettable given that you only really see it when you’re in the menus between the games themselves, and while the online gameplay via GameShare and GameChat is nice, it should’ve been in the base game to begin with. It’s only five dollars to upgrade, but I think the base Switch version is perfectly fine to play on either console.
Conclusion
Super Bomberman Collection showcases some of the very best gameplay that Bomberman has to offer. Between the various games on offer, there are dozens of hours of exciting couch multiplayer battles to be had, demonstrating that it doesn’t take the latest and greatest tech for a game to simply be fun to play with others.
Though the lack of native online is disappointing, the great gameplay coupled with some robust museum content that honours the legacy of these games makes this one a no-brainer—especially given the relatively cheap price. If you’re looking for another game you can pull out on game nights with friends, I’d highly suggest you pick this one up.

Thanks for the review, I've always wanted to give the older Bomberman games a try so this is perfect for me, getting it as soon as possible when the physical version comes out - fingers crossed we'll eventually get more Bomberman collections including other games (in particular I'd love one with the 64 games to finally finish Hero and 64 while properly playing for the first time Second Attack)!
The fact that there's a genuine physical release makes this a worthy release.
This is worse than the first few years of the Switch were 90% of games were WiiU ports.....now most the Switch2 games are Switch1 ports

The lack of native online is mind boggling . Share play is so inconsistent. We had to both wire up fiber to get it stable and still had to account for bits of lag etc.

And most of the "upgrades" are very slight, mostly relegated to resolution bumps and performance increases that are largely the result of a more powerful console.

It really doesn't matter how good this collection is without an online multiplayer component for me. I almost bought this day one and backed off when I realized. I’m really happy for all of you out there who can convince your friends to come over and sit on your couch to play bomberman.
I was excited for this one from the moment they announced it, but it doesn’t seem like others have the same fondness for the series. It may not be ground-breaking, but it’s great to have a SNES game I loved as a kid with a physical release for the Switch 2. I honestly want more of these collections. With each new series release, it feels like my NES and SNES are getting an upgrade to keep those games alive for another decade. Could I pop in my SNES cartridge when I want to play it? Yes. Could I have it as a portable option, living alongside the rest of my Switch collection? Also yes. I only hope they continue more NES and SNES game ports like this in the future. SNES Star Wars collection would be great. Illusion of Gaia trilogy, Desert Strike, Donkey Kong Country. They’d all be great with dedicated physical switch collections.
I’ve played a lot of Bomber Man games on the Turbo Grafx Mini, I enjoyed them. I might pick this up later.

I'm confused about the "it should've been in the base game to begin with" part. Are you referring to GameShare and GameChat? I'm unsure if I understand what you're meaning, since those are exclusive features on a Switch 2.

Bomberman isn't owned by Nintendo, so in order for a Bomberman 99 to happen, Nintendo and Konami would need to strike a deal for that to happen, just like Nintendo did with the company that owns Tetris for Tetris 99. I don't think a deal like that is likely to happen though, considering what happened to the online Bomberman game that did come out a few years ago but was discontinued after just a year. I am still SUPER interested in this one! But what a shame there is no online for random pairings. Still, I had 1 and 2 on the Snes as a kid so have a lot of fondness for it. Did we at least get Number 3 in Europe? It seems familiar to me, but then all of the games pretty much play the same. 😁
Pretty good collection. I would've liked to see more games added (Turbo Graphix 16, Game Boy, and even PlayStation...?), but I do like how Super Bomberman 4 and Super Bomberman 5 received English versions at last.

Been having a lot of fun with this collection on my Oled. For a single player like me, there's tons and tons of content and many extras as a result of the usual care Konami has been pouring in their recent collections.

@Charlirnie You could say that about Nintendo's 'Switch 2 Editions' of existing games maybe, but the games that release on both Switch 1 and 2 at the same time, like this Bomberman collection, are still new games (or new to Switch at least) even if they're not exclusive to the Switch 2. I wouldn't say it's comparable to Wii U ports.
I feel like if it did have native online, you'd have to become really good friends with the other 3 people who bought this game to play it online with strangers to arrange to be on at the same time. I definitely think gameshare is the correct choice for Bomberman online, best played with friends

We did indeed. Only the first two Super Bomberman games got a US release, but we got the first three in Europe.

Curious how the emulation is in terms of things like input-lag, i know that how it feels is very subjective but curious if people have measured it and whether it falls within a range which is considered "fine" by most.
@Mgalens I second this. There are some threads on Reddit indicating that the input lag is pretty bad... But I'm surprised I don't see it mentioned here. This is the only thing holding me back from getting it.
Wish the switch 2 had the Bomberman gameboy advance adventure game.

It kind of came out at an awkward time for me but I'll definitely pick it up at some point.
Super Bomberman was frikkin magnificent and magical back in 93 on SNES. Hanging out with friends, and having sleep overs, while dueling it out with it's 4-player mode using the SNES multitap specifically for this game was an absolute blast.
It was a main stay at my best friends house during those times and ranks as one of my personal favourite SNES experiences of all time. I'll never forget it's opening title theme song either. Ahhh, take me back!
But ya, Super Mario Kart still took the lead in terms of multiplayer goodness, followed up with Street Fighter II & then Turbo which made the former straight up obsolote. And now that the Arcade version of Turbo, ala 'Hyper Fighting' exists in the Street Fighter 30th anniversary collection, including Arcade Stadium, there's no reason to go back to that on SNES either.

Astal - Console Archives, needs to happen. Aka one of the two first 32 bit sprite based platformers to ever come to NA, during the launch window of Saturn and then PS1 with Rayman back in 95' They were pretty jaw dropping after beign so accustomed to 16-bits with SNES & Genesis. Topped with CD quality Audio, SFX, Voice overs & FMV cut scenes.
I'd love to see more PS1 & Saturn titles join the party like Jumping Flash!, ESPN Extreme Games, Poy Poy, Bug 1&2, Clockwork Knight etc.
No online on a system that natively has something like gamechat is a little baffling.
Just a note that we've added Red Art Games in with the developer mentions, as Konami were only publishers on this one.
I never really cared about single player Bomberman campaigns (unless it's something different like Bomberman Hero) but Super Bomberman 1, 3, 4 and 5 can be played trough in co-op and it makes those experiences better.
@Mgalens @paloblanco there is some clear input lag. I've been playing these games for decades (on real hardware and various emulators) and it's never been as noticeable as it is here. It doesn't make it unplayable but sometimes I can't turn when I want or I place bombs on the wrong blocks because of it.
Also, the only actual screen filter is CRT and it's really bad.
Story mode in (most of) the SNES games is actually very good, especially when played in co-op. Definitely more than "training for the real game".

Name does seem familiar but looking at it i dont think it came to europe, i may have seen it in some saturn magazines as an import though as it seems somewhat familiar looking, i really love what 32-bit 2d brought to the table, everything felt so vibrant, would be nice to see a bunch of games from that era get a second chance.
The US box art definitely feels of its time, they made the main character look like some kind of human knuckles-the-echidna, definitely still has that 90s era charm to it even if the original box-art captures the look of the game better (also shows quite a bit of restraint compared to how a lot of japanese game characters got on US/EU box arts like the Mega-drive/genesis Ys III box art)
