Summer Game Fest has established itself as a host platform, of sorts, for gaming reveals and events that can stretch over the Summer months. With E3 skipping 2022, it sets the stage for the Geoff Keighley-led event to take the lead. It starts with a 'cross-industry' showcase event full of world premieres and announcements, giving gamers a central event in addition to the many smaller shows.
Beyond that, there are a lot of events planned for the Summer that aren't actually affiliated with Summer Game Fest, and plenty will have a generous helping of Switch games.
As with previous years there'll be a lot going on in the coming weeks and months, so we'll keep this guide updated with all the details you need.
What is Summer Game Fest?
Summer Game Fest made its debut in 2020, very much filling a void at that time of cancelled in-person events like E3, PAX and so on. Its various videos and live streams stretch over a few months, albeit some of the reveals and events are much smaller than others. A lot of the big hitters are focused on mid-June, too.
Its major 'Kickoff Live' event in 2021 was a showcase to be central to the event, and we expect that to be the case once again with the opening broadcast of 2022.
When is Summer Game Fest 2022?
Summer Game Fest will kick off with its showcase event on Thursday 9th June 2022; unlike other virtual events / expos it doesn't then end a few days later. It'll serve as a hub for reveals and gaming events throughout the Summer.
Summer Game Fest's opening showcase is on 9th June at 11am Pacific / 2pm Eastern / 7pm UK / 8pm CEST.

Moving beyond the opening showcase, Summer Game Fest collates a broad range of events. The list is small at time of initial publication, but it'll likely expand a great deal in the coming weeks.

Each publisher will likely host their events on their individual social media / streaming platforms, while the general Summer Game Fest channels will also be a good option on Twitch and YouTube.
Here on Nintendo Life we'll host live streams and blogs of events we think have a high chance of Switch content, or are simply of interest.

If you aren't an Xbox fan, do yourself a favor and please skip this. It's a waste of your time and you are better off catching the 15 minute highlight reel after the event. Chance Nintendo is going to be at this: 2.5% (and it's probably something small & 3rd party, very unlikely to be BOTW or anything big)
@Axecon Given the other events already surrounding it, remember that Nintendo typically does a Direct for E3 and that the Xbox presentation is typically linked to E3 instead of Keighley’s event. I would not be surprised, if, given E3’s cancellation, Keighley can convince Nintendo to push the Direct to the greater umbrella of his showcase.
@somnambulance Somehow I don't think this is likely. There seems to be some behind the scenes bad blood & bias that Keighley has against Nintendo. It's always apparent how little representation Nintendo gets at any of Keighley's events. What's also funny is back in the early 2000s Keighley was a game journalist and reviewer and historically gave Nintendo games low scores.
To be honest, I'm not even sure if we are going to get a Nintendo Direct this Summer at all. Of course everyone would love a formal Direct to take place, but other than historical precedent there's little indication that one will take place. Even if a Direct takes place there is no way it will be incorporated into Summer Games Fest and instead will be its own event.
Maybe wait until more developers have signed up?
Xenoblade 3 splatoon 3 will both be out in september. Botw was delayed til after christmas. They need some kind of release for the christmas sales, so i think theres gonna be a direct this summer to show case for games oct-dec. I doubt pokemon violet is gonna be the only christmas title
Unless Nintendo is doing a direct in June (I'm guessing they will) all I'll be watching is the Xbox showcase

No doubt there'll be other games also, and Pokemon Scarlet exists too..
@JustMonika Never happening. The Switch isn't powerful enough for this and it wouldn't sell. Bethesda usually doesn't port older games like that. Skyrim is the only exception.
@BinaryMessiah If Switch can handle Dying Light, Doom Eternal and The Witcher III which are all PS4 games then I'm sure it could easily handle an old game like Fallout 3. I mean Skyrim came out 3 years after Fallout 3 and it had an updated engine and everything and it runs fine on Switch. Everyone wants Fallout 3 and New Vegas to get a proper updated release instead of releasing Skyrim for the billionth time so I think it will eventually happen.
@JustMonika Bethesda never re-releases older games ever. I don't think it's ever going to happen. It takes a lot of time to port huge games like that and it takes a lot of money. They may not see it selling well enough. Who knows, we can be surprised tomorrow with the Bethesda conference. I'll eat my own words if they announce it. You forget that those games you mentioned were hand-tailored for the Switch. They weren't just straight ports and they were newer games.
Skyrim already had an updated engine when it was ported, and had been worked on extensively with a 64-bit engine. Also, said games run pretty poorly on Switch outside of Skyrim. Really low frame rates, playable, but far from great, and they took a serious visual hit. I know that Switch owners don't care bout this, but some do. It's just the Bethesda way.
