Why is storage so ridiculously expensive? I still haven't bought an SSD for my PS5—not that I download many games anymore on that system, but I can't install games from a new disc without having to delete another game's data. Either way, I already have a 512 GB SD card for my Switch 2, so unless that thing starts getting full, this gets a hard pass from me.

Why is the price so high? Especially Euro. I got a 1TB micro SD express card last year from Lexar for 200€ on sale reduced from 300€. 500€ is ridiculous nonsense. You can get the same thing right now on Amazon for 235€ from Lexar. It works perfectly.

The emergence is welcome, but affording the thing (especially with the pricetag it would likely grow further upon arrival here) definitely looks like a prospect as distant as the similarly borderline console-priced 1.5-2 Tb investments into Switch storage. For now, I'll keep hoping to upgrade to a 512 Gb within the next few months.

It sucks that the storage jump in prices has hit MicroSD cards. Glad I took the dive with my Lexar 1TB when I did, I believe it was less than $200 in October.

Can only imagine what 1.5 and 2 TB version of these cards will cost. Non-express versions have gone up as well. Think I got my Team Group 2TB for about $160... now it's $280.

Lel so the card is basically the price of a new Switch 2. Guess I'll just keep uninstalling/rotating installed games as needed.

SanDisk must be out of their minds with the price. I was checking mentioned here Lexar when I was buying Switch 2 and it's €235 currently on German Amazon. Biwin on UK Amazon is £205 (~€240). Just looked up SanDisk on German Amazon and it's €370 from US but they don't send it to UK or Ireland. With this price and competition I wish luck to SanDisk, or not.

I remember when I bought a couple of 2TB SanDisk microSD Extreme Pro cards for £155 (~€180). It's insane what's going on, absolutely insane.

Lexar already has a 1 TB SD Express and it has been available at least since the Switch 2 launch. I bought mine last year when it costed $200 but I got mine with a 30% discount.

I was going to comment “call me when they release a 2 TB card” but the Lexar 1 TB card is now at $350, I don’t want to imagine what the price for a 2 TB would be.

@KayFiOS microSD Express is a specialized type of memory so it’s inherently going to be more expensive than regular SD cards. Plus, data center demand has increased prices for storage. Plus, tariffs have to be paid by someone, and it’s easier to double prices worldwide than to quadruple them only in the US.

@VeganH The costs of storage don’t scale linearly with capacity. You’re comparing 512GB to 1TB which are apples to oranges. onn doesn’t even make a 1TB card. It’s more difficult to cram double the storage into the exact same form factor and onn hasn’t achieved that.

Also, onn is a Walmart brand that doesn’t have an established reputation for quality the way SanDisk and Lexar do. Don’t be too surprised if it fails early.

I just couldn’t stomach paying that for 1TB ( I’ve paid more for a Seagate expansion card but that was 2TB ).

Ebuyer is selling a Lexar 1TB Express card for £220. I got mine from eBbuyer because there are lots of fakes about especially on Amazon marketplace. Yisave are accompany that is selling them but I’ve googled that company and didn’t like what I read.

I finally upgraded my switch oled to a 512 like less than a year before switch 2 cause I waited and waited for cheaper prices in Canada. I think I got it for 80 which was the same price as my 128 when I got my first switch. Now I’m just never going to be able to afford an sd card for the switch 2. If someone would have told me that the prices of electronics would go up not down in 25’ 26’ I would not have believed them. So frustrating

I just yesterday got a 256GB card in preparation for Elden Ring as Oblivion remastered finished off my available storage, already had to remove AC shadows which I’ll eventually return to….lol
I was willing to part with £45 but up into the hundreds of £ is a luxury I can’t personally rationalise tbh I’d rather just uninstall some things.

I'm good with my 512gb EX for now. I might get a 1tb one soon once I plan to buy more games for my Switch 2 but for now I'm just too busy with games on my Switch 1 as I only had like 5 games on my Switch 2 so far.

‘Slightly less hefty sum’ - I know NL need to keep Nintendo and its partners sweet but I think this deserves slightly more criticism than that.

@KayFiOS This has to do with the current AI craze, where the big AI tech bozos have claimed the majority of RAM and storage chip manufacturing.

This means, far less consumer RAM and Storage is being produced, which in turn creates a shortage and drives prices up.

These prices are insane. That AI craze is driving all the prices up for all of us. We need to make it stop!

What a terrible time to release a product like this. Unfortunately I’m basically out of space on my 512GB card, so hopefully it will be discounted eventually (probably only in my dreams).

And for everyone who is having sticker shock at the price of this, it’s due to the ongoing memory and chip shortage/crisis. Everything has gotten more expensive, and is expected to continue to get more expensive into at least 2027 or 2028. It’s the same reason the Switch 2 is $50 more expensive than when it launched, and the reason Xboxes, PlayStations, and PCs are astronomically expensive now, especially compared to 3-5 years ago.

I mean this from the depth of my heart when I say .... ***** off SanDisk. A storage upgrade of 1TB should not cost almost as much as the console itself.

There was a good while last generation where you could get a 1 TB SanDisk card for ~$80. That model's cost has now doubled, exceeding even its launch price, and I'm not sure these new ones will ever be that affordable. The only paths I see toward reasonably priced consumer electronics would require the AI industry either to fulfill every promise they've made and solve scarcity forever, or to crash and burn so hard that hardware manufacturers are stuck holding a ton of stock they don't know what to do with.

I think at this point I'm just going to be stuck rotating out installed games on my Switch 2 until the console ends up dying.

@Yosher @MirrorFate2 At this point I feel like if I were given a choice between pure digital or Game Key Cards, I'd take the Game Key Cards. At the very least I'll still have the physical card to swap with others, or to sell. Even if the game still requires a download, Nintendo is at the very least known for letting you redownload purchases without having the eshop open. I'd take it over Sony's vision of an all digital future.

@Pillowpants it's actually been mostly proven much of the price increase are from the 3 chip manufacturing companies fixing prices to price gouge during the increased demand.

So while AI has increased demand, it's not entirely true that prices had "no choice" but to increase as much as they have.

And for the record they've been caught doing this before so it's not even the first time the big 3 chip making companies fixed the market.

They've just gotten bolder because people are blaming AI instead of them.

Better buy it before it costs 8 million euros.

See how all these companies that use codes in a box are cheapskates and pass on storage costs to the consumer. Gamekey cards do the same but at least retain some semblence of physical. I mean, the end game for most devs is tying everyone into a subscription.
But imagine if you lost your job and you go through hard times. Having to still pay a subscription to access art and entertainment instead of just grabbing something you own off the shelf to give you a sliver of hope and retain a sense of normality. Not being able to sell something to get a bit of extra cash (granted, game key cards retain this aspect). It sucks.

I really want 2TB cards to be a thing already. I still have to shuffle crap around with 1TB. What's wild to me is like there's like 5 games or so when combined take up more space than over 120ish other games I have installed.

That is insane. I am a long way off needing one. Hopefully they become much cheaper by the time I ever do. Hopefully I won't though, with a bit of decent management. It should not cost as much or near enough the same as the console!

@MirrorFate2 I'm well aware of what genAI is doing there yeah, that doesn't mean big SD cards weren't already expensive before that though. But I guess it's also a reason why more companies are opting for key cards in the first place? Not that certain companies wouldn't have opted for key cards anyway even if genAI bloating prices wasn't a factor.

@VoidofLight I agree that game key cards are a better solution than a full digital future Sony has us going in. But to me it feels like, taking candy from a baby vs making sure the baby never gets any candy anymore. One is notably less evil, but still evil nontheless.
