A video recently popped up online about a demake of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild for the Nintendo DS.
In this demake, you can traverse the land of Hyrule as Link in all of its "low-poly" glory. While it was thought to have been created by a "mysterious Chinese dev", it seems this is not the case.
The creator of the project, known as 'Ermelber' on social media, has now responded to GBATemp about this demake, explaining it's something that was made "several years ago" with his friends, and speculation in a recent video about where it might have come from isn't accurate.

It's simply "leaked" online and found its way onto an AliExpress DS flashcard:
"It seems an old ROM of a project I was working on with friends leaked online, it's so funny seeing people speculate about this as some sort of obscure piece of media by a mysterious Chinese dev, while it's simply just something we made several years ago. LMAO"
The creator, who is apparently a game developer at a company called Strobetano, goes on to mention how this map featuring Link was mostly just a way for his team to test out its own "terrain engine and make something fun out of it". Although he didn't rule out returning to this demake one day, it seems unlikely at this stage.
You can see the latest video about this demake below, just keep in mind the "conspiracy theory" about where it might have come from has now been debunked.
As highlighted by GamesRadar, footage of this Breath of the Wild DS demake actually popped up on "the Chinese DailyMotion-like site BilliBilli" way back in 2019.
So there you go - case closed. This demake isn't some mystery game, it's just an "old ROM of a project" according to its creator.

That's pretty neat, hadn't heard of it. I feel like the DS Zelda games are some of the ugliest so it's crazy to see this and think it could have possibly looked better. Very impressive
China didn't make the game just the hardware... 😒
@obijuankanoobie No fairness to the 4 swords game?
@Samalik ? I know there was something on DSi (I didn't have one) I thought it was just a port of the GBA game?
@obijuankanoobie Was also on 3DS by technicality. Even had easy multiplayer
@Samalik @obijuankanoobie It was rereleased on DSi and 3DS, but I'd still call Four Swords a GBA game, since it first released as part of the GBA port of A Link to the Past.
Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks would be the official DS Zelda games.
@SuperBro64 thanks for clarifying!
I love those "crinkly" graphics, makes me feel like I'm playing New Super Mario Bros. again. Am I allowed to call myself old when I'm not even close to 29?
[insert "we got X before GTA VI" comment here]
Oh no! Now thousands of people will play this instead of the real BotW!
Better take it down quickly!
@SuperBro64 In that case, would you call Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury a Wii U game?
Four Swords Anniversary Edition was a remaster with a single player mode, exclusive levels and wireless multiplayer. I think that justifies it being considered a DSi game.
Nice that the mystery has been solved and regardless, pretty cool that Ermelber and co. were able to make such a demake!
Can we get Halo DS the same way now?
Haven't heard Ermelber's name in a while. He used to be prolific in the Mario Kart Wii custom track scene, and I think he still creates mods for Mario Kart DS
@LXP8 That's a good question. Didn't really think about that.
I think I'll say that, yes, Four Swords Anniversary Edition was a DSi game, but it was not a completely new game in the series, so I wouldn't count it as a DS game in the same way as Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks.
Similarly, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury was a Switch game, but not a completely new Mario game like Super Mario Odyssey or Super Mario Bros. Wonder.
That's my take on it.
I really imagined that because of Spirit Tracks map this was possible, but I think it was just a fantasy of my maladjusted mind.
