Hello there. We're back once again for another good ol' rummage through the Nintendo Life Mailbox.
It's been a relatively quiet few weeks on the gaming front, as people head off on holidays for a break from their inboxes. We, however, are here to check ours!
Got something you want to get off your chest? We're ready and waiting to read about your game-related ponderings. Each month we’ll highlight a Star Letter, the writer of which will receive a month’s subscription to our ad-free Supporter scheme. Check out the submission guidelines at the bottom of this page.
Let's get rummaging.
Nintendo Life Mailbox - August 2024
"what have you" (***STAR LETTER***)
Hey how are you all doing? you know what I miss? going into a shop, buying a game and that was it. Today you have Deluxe Editions, Gold Editions and what have you (Street Fighter cough cough choke choke). I wish we could go back to the Golden days of gaming as I call them but I know that's never going to happen. Anyway are you looking forward to the Switch Successor? I definitely am but I do think it has a lot to live up to. I hope I did this letter thing right lol.
Have a wonderful Sunday and happy gaming. RubyCarbuncle
I agree that Standard, Deluxe, Gold, Silver, Amethyst, Ultimate, Ultra Complete+ Redux Game of the Year Editions get tiresome. 'Oh look, this one comes with some stickers and a bookmark and a coin and the grey socks DLC.' Essential stuff. Then again, it's nothing new. There's always been umpteen variations of Street Fighter, right?
Despite all that (and the wider industry melting down), I do think these are the 'golden days' right now. You can't move for quality games old and new, and they're cheaper and more accessible than ever. From a player's point of view, there's never been a better time. Even with modern irritations (endless patches for games rushed out the door, nickel-and-diming DLC, etc), there are plenty of modern perks as well.
And yes, I'm looking forward to new Nintendo hardware. Probably in the wrong job if I weren't, innit. - Ed.
"untapped gold"
Do you find it weird Bandai Namco have never used the success of Xenoblade to rerelease the Xenosaga games? They’d probably sell better now than they did back then even with the amount of new Xeno fans out there.
The same for Square and Xenogears.
I feel it’s untapped gold for both. HeeHo
It is an odd one, but it comes down to the same old story: not enough gold.
There are a lot of Switches out there and you'd think that a re-release would attract a fair percentage of newer Xenoblade fans, but that's very hard to quantify versus, say, the number of players you'd expect to buy a XC4 based on sales of 1, 2, and 3. It's a numbers game, unfortunately. - Ed.
