Nintendo Japan has today revealed six new designs joining the 'Controller Button Collection' — a range of miniature fidget cube-like keychains inspired by classic Nintendo controllers.
On top of the initial NES and Famicom designs, the collection now also includes buttons and sticks based on the SNES, N64 and GameCube. There are two SNES designs with European and North American colourways, but the stars of the show have to be the N64 and GC models, which brandish each controller's button layout and control stick (or the little C-stick, in the GameCube's case). Imagine having one of them to play with while you walk to work.
Unfortunately, most of us will have to be content with imagining the collection. These keychains are only available in special gacha machines found in the Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto Nintendo stores and Tokyo's Narita airport. Not only does this mean that you can't guarantee which design you'll get, but it also means that most of us will never be able to get our hands on them. We're not crying, you're crying.
At the time of writing, the gacha machines are the only way to get your hands on these sweet keychains (bar some expensive online resales), so we in the West will have to make do with looking, longingly, at the above pictures for now. Either that or you take a hacksaw to your OG controller and make your own (please don't do that).
Which Controller Button Collection keychain is your favourite? Let us know in the comments.

I bet they don’t work as wireless controllers but wouldn’t that be SO SICK. 😎
My favourite is the GameCube buttons one. I like all Nintendo controllers but if it’s supposed to be bought just to be looked at then yeah. GameCube.
They went over and above on the smoothness of the design for that controller. It still looks so futuristic.
Not sure if it's because of the fact that we can't get these in Europe, but I clearly want them all.
If I wanted a controller that don't work right, I'd just stick with my Joy-Con. 🥁
Would love the colourful SNES one! Those buttons and colours hit right in the nostalgia for me.
I don’t think ‘Nintendo Japan’ is a proper title within Nintendo?
Pretty cool and it also shows how recognizable the parts of these controllers are as you can immediately tell them apart!
It's a shame that these aren't available in the states, because I really dig these designs and would be willing to spend thousands of cold hard platinum points to collect these.
@Ace-Lucario Well, the article uses the word "fidget", so one would hope so. They certainly look like they can be interacted with. They all look amazing!
Hopefully a set of these will turn up on eBay. Far too tempting to not have!
It wouldn't surprise me to see these surface as My Nintendo exclusives in the West, particularly as it's a little peculiar that they would acknowledge the NES in the Japanese market.
It would also be neat if the three Famicom/NES parts can link together, but I wouldn't count on it.
Want.
Them.
All.
I want the GameCube one!
Gamecube's A,B,X,Y layout is still the best layout. And I never got mixed up swapping consoles because the different shapes, angles and sizes on the 'Cube made any input prompts super obvious.
I'm always having to check which is X and which is Y now.
It looks cute, but I prefer Wiimote keychain.
Can't pick a favorite. SNES, N64 and GCN all look too good and recognizable
@Ogbert Objectively the perfect one is still the PlayStation which is an enhanced SNES controller.
Well. Time to scour ebay for overpriced secondhand fidget toys every day. Got my hopes up these seem so fun
Really hoping we can get these though the nintendo store in the UK sometime
We have our first Japan trip booked this september, will be on the lookout for these (and probably will need an extra suitcase for all the stuff I want to buy)
GameCube one is lovely.
Damn, was just at Narita airport yesterday,
didn't see them.
@NinChocolate NCL
urgh, now i need to buy the gamecube and n64 ones
I want to buy them all of so I can mix and match em' to create my own terrifying controller amalgamation's.
I never understood - and probably will never understand - why NoA went with the grossest purples on the controller instead of the objectively prettier and more iconic four colors.
@G_and_Thomas I prefer the GameCube's controller. But Triangle and Square are easier to remember the position of at least.
These days the DualSense is hands down the best for me, even without all the haptics it would be. But I'd love to see a Nintendo Pro-Controller that tried something different again like the GC buttons or the WiiU's stick placement. Both of them felt much nicer than the standard to me.
Each to their own!
For a moment, I thought these were My Nintendo rewards. I was about to rush over and spend all of my platinum coins trying to get them all. It's too bad. I have a decent amount of coins saved up. They've had some pretty cool keychains here in the states. I still love my N64 box art keychains. Oh well. As much as I want them, I doubt I would be willing to spend whatever scalpers are charging for them.
Come on! I went to Japan last year and got all the Pikmin terrariums and the NES/Famicom controller keychains… Now they announced the 2nd waves for both. 😭 Gotta go to Japan again, I guess, lol.
@Ogbert I believe we got a "carcinisation" of gaming controllers since after the 7th gen because we see that it's the most optimal design for most game genres.
The GameCube one is better at Smash and Mario Bros (like the N64 one was made with Mario 64 in mind).
The Gamecube controller is the most overrated controller ever made. The face button layout is absurd, the Z button is garbage, the C stick is a sorry excuse for a second stick, and the d-pad is way too small.
A few nostalgic fools act like it's god's gift to gaming, when it was a porting nightmare for any 3rd party software, meanwhile, they praise it for Smash Bros. while Smash Bros. plays absolutely dandy with a standard controller.
I NEED ALL OF THESE.
@SillyG That was my thought too. The NES, SNES keychains will be the ones showing up for sale probably.
These are nifty and my very favoritest ones are the GC with its x and y beanbuttonz and the EU SNES cuz of the colour variety.
We’re all crying.
You can already see them popping up on ebay:

You're right, I am crying.
The N64 one would be dope but only if the ‘Z’ button was on the back so I can feel like I have an old school controller in my hand
@Ace-Lucario The first set of this collection back in 2021 had buttons that you could press, I'm willing to bet these can be pressed too and the stick will also wiggle around. They're really cute
I'd love to have the SNES and Gamecube ones.
Those are neat. I wouldn't want any of them but they're neat.
@Ace-Lucario the article did say they were a fidget toy. So I assume that the buttons and sticks can move.
I really want this, especially the Gamecube ones
With any luck maybe we can see a few of these show up at Round1 since they import Japanese claw machines in my city. Not so much gatcha's but I can dream.
Club Nintendo rewards? Come on they should be there for us to grab! I'd be all over it.
@G_and_Thomas I don't think you know what "objectively" means.
@Lanmanna Then please tell me why the PlayStation controller has been the template of almost every third party and no name controllers in the market?
I mean the Xbox controller is based on the Dreamcast one which was itself inspired by the Sony one that was an enhanced SNES controller.
The SNES pad is the basis of how controllers should be like in gaming and the PlayStation DualShock is truly what defined how controllers should be like for the next decades. Not even the Wiimore nor the Xbox 360 ones have redefined how gamepads should be like.
Put one of the machines in the NY Nintendo Store.
That would be hella popular.
I just need me one of those N64 analog sticks, that is all.... Lol.
Interesting that this is currently only in Japan yet they include the NES and North American SNES buttons. In any case, I want the GameCube buttons!!
As a fidget addict, I want them all. Every. Last. One.
C'mon, Nintendo. Give the people what they want.
Went today and paid for 3 entries, got 2 N64 buttons and an NA SNES button. Fortunately, soon after, I managed to trade one of the former for a GC C-stick, and the latter for an N64 stick with other customers.
Just got 2 in Tokyo. Ended up with an American SNES button pad and an N64 analog stick.
Also got start and select NES.
So I.have a piece of each part of my childhood
@SwagaliciousJohnson just ordered them on ebay. Half the price of a AAA switch game.
I want all of these.
