Announcing Metroid Prime 4 was an amazing way to end the Direct.

Please make it a Switch 2 release title too! At this point this game deserved next gen power. But looks great anyways.

I was expecting them to finish with the announcement of Metroid Prime 2: Echoes Remastered, but I cannot complain as we finally got to see Metroid Prime 4 and Sylux as a real threat.

I'm glad Metroid was the final announcement, even if I still have to wait a little bit more, but it actually does me a favor as money has been a bit tight this year.

In the Direct presentation, they conveniently only mentioned it's coming next year, but didn't say "coming to Nintendo Switch" like with every other game in the Direct. I'm sure that means it's actually coming to Switch 2, they just didn't want to say that out loud, since the Direct was not supposed to mention Switch 2 at all.

The music was amazing!! When you got the first glimpse at that tropical planet, the music gave me Main Menu theme vibes from MP1!

I played the first two on release, but never got around to 3 as I was put off by motion controls. Would love a remaster of that for Switch before picking this up (hopefully) as a Switch 2 launch title.

It’s the Switch. It’s not gonna have the best visuals at all. Yet people have so high expectations of having highly realistic graphics and what not.

For many reasons, this Direct could go down in the history books as the greatest ever.

@FirstEmperor Agreed, there was no way Nintendo would betray it's promise to Switch users like that, just as they didn't betray Wii U owners with Breath of the Wild.

They may make some crazy decisions historically but it's incredibly rare for them to go back on a promise to fans like that. It's one of the many reasons I've stuck with them all these years.

So glad this was finally shown off! However, given how long we waited....felt like the way the trailer was cut was too nonchalant, if that makes sense.

YES! I love the looks of it. Graphically speaking, with the revamped model of Samus as well, it reminderd me of the art direction and graphics of Other M. Switch only folks! Maybe for February or March 2025?

Trailer didn't blow me away like the Metroid Dread trailer did. At least it showed that its a proper Metroid Prime game. And fun to see that they follow up on the Sylux teaser (I didn't expect that). To me it also looks like a spruced-up Metroid Prime, should have looked much better. Also, still on Switch! People expect a dual-release, but we have yet to see that!

@chipia We’ve literally only seen what is presumably the opening section of the game and a glimpse of another area. I doubt they felt the need to show anything properly new because just seeing anything of the game was enough for the fan base

I was kinda hoping they'd release the other two Prime games to tide us over, but I'm just glad to get some footage of Prime 4. I assume the trailer is showing us the typical Metroid prologue, before we're deposited in the landscape teased at the end.

On the graphics, I'm not sure what some are complaining about. It looks great to me. A lot like Prime Remastered, which we all knew was going to be the case, because Prime Remastered was explicitly a practice run for this.

This is going to be Cross Gen (and hopefully enhanced) for sure.

Weirdly doesn’t look quite as good as Prime Remastered which is surprising - but I’m comparing a masterful visual overhaul of a classic game to a brand new title which actually looks like it might be going for a slightly less realistic aesthetic this time). Regardless, there’s probably different things going on under the engine hood I’m sure (plus this is initial reveal footage) can’t make assumptions yet.

Either way - it looks great! I can’t believe it’s actually real.

I gotta say, that Sylux looks way better with matte armor compared to his original glossy design.

I was hoping for MP2 and MP3 remasters to be announced too. I haven’t played MP3 much, I have no idea who Sylux is for example! I do have it for the Wii but I’d rather just play it on Switch with the gorgeous remaster graphics.

I did briefly play MP3 years ago but never got past the first bit, there was just loads of chatting with humans and naff looking aliens. Not a Metroid game to me! I really hope 4 is closer to MP1 in that regard.

MP4 looks great though it must be said.

Also wild that people are STILL harping over graphics after all this time on a Nintendo platform. Nintendo hasn’t pushed for graphics since what? The GameCube? lol.

Anyway if the GAMEPLAY is any fun (I don’t doubt) then it’s easy day 1 buy.

Graphics looked pretty average to me... I haven't actually played any Metroid Prime games, so thought at first it must be a port of a Gamecube one. Maybe it will look incredible on Switch 2?

@Sonicka I think the grey/blue environment makes everything look a bit drab. Intentionally so, which is why I didn't mind. It's supposed to look like a desaturated, ruined battleground. I assume the biome we'll be exploring later will lean closer to Prime Remastered's splendor.

Finally, my Amazon pre-order might finally go through!

Let's hope it doesn't end up Beyond 2025.

Still don't understand why Prime 2 and 3 never got HD remasters. They need to get on that before Prime 4 releases.

@Jalex_64 The only times I can think of when Nintendo canceled a game for its original platform were Pikmin 3 and 4, and those were only because they were delayed so much that their original platform was no longer even in production. That's why I've always said the only way Prime 4 could become a Switch 2 exclusive is if development restarted yet again so that the Switch 1 would no longer be available when it comes out.

I still remember people claiming TotK was delayed so it could coincide with Switch 2's launch. You'd think people might've learned something from that, but no.

@Toastmaster It might be one of those games that launches on both, like Twilight Princess or Breath of the Wild - the last game for the previous gen and first game for the new system.

@Edu23XWiiU They'll more than likely launch it for both Switch 1 and 2 next year. That's not a bad thing, it's just smart to do. Show that it looks great on Switch 1, then show it again on Switch 2 with ray tracing or in 4K or what have you. It'll still be solid on the current Switch if the remaster is anything to go by.

The Prime Remaster was definitely the preview of what they’re gonna do with Beyond. There’s no doubt it’s hitting the Switch 2.

Is it confirmed for Switch? Because what I saw didn't look like it could run at 60fps on Switch. Not even close. I wouldn't be surprised if this was a Switch 2 only title.

I don't think that this game will be cross-generation. Too many people believes i. that "Switch 2" will getting releases of every Switch games with enhanced graphics, this won't happen! Nintendo won't releases a HD remaster of an already HD remastered game like Sony does. Also "Switch 2" will NOT have 4K or Ray-tracing, not even Steam Deck has it despite costing +2x more than Switch.

"Switch 2" will 99,9% be revealed in early 2025 and then released in 2nd half of 2025. I also think that "Switch 2" will get a Metroid Remake, and then a new entry in the Metroid series.

I find it odd that this announcement was made WITHOUT the announcement for Prime 2 and 3 Remastered. Some of us never played the GameCube and Wii originals (I tried to play Prime Trilogy on Wii when that was released but the game was so literally dark, I couldn't tell where to go or what to do). It would have been nice to have the entire Prime saga on one system so where's Prime 2 and 3 Remastered? Are those going to be released or do you think Nintendo just wants to forget about those games at this point?

Finally. And it looks like... Retro's other Metroid Prime games, which is great. The gameplay part reminded me of both MP1's opening, which was kind of slow and atmospheric, and MP3's opening, which was more frantic and action-oriented. I guess it too is an early part of this game... and the post-title part was just like when Samus arrives to a new location in the previous Prime games...

Really pushing the visual comparison between Samus and Sylux with those Metroids on the latter's shoulders... Sylux wasn't in Retro's previous MP games (except maybe in the 100% completion video for MP3), but the character seems to be this game's main antagonist...

And, regarding that title, "Beyond" what, exactly...?

Really looking forward to this, and really glad it wasn't relegated to Switch 2.

@contractcooker I thought it looked about on par with what we saw with Metroid Prime Remastered. I imagine if this is a cross gen release the 'Switch 2' would have additional visual flourishes?

@Vil Nintendo would never do ray tracing or 4K, would make the console more expensive for no reason. Metroid is not a console seller, and, if they want to bring an impact with their next platform, whatever it'll be called, they need to differenciate its software from the Switch as much as possible.

I like the title Beyond. The only other property to have that had that title is Batman Beyond. Which something to note because its also cyberpunk with someone in a power suit.

@Hyrulewarrior I think this means that the remaster of MP1 we got on Switch was actually built on MP4’s engine, maybe as a test to see how much they can push the graphics on the console.
As for the Switch’s successor, I think the OG Switch games will be boosted (kinda like how MS does with old Xbox 360 games on Series) hence skipping the need of re-releasing/re-buying the games, while enjoying the old Switch games at higher fps or resolution

@GravyThief Sylux was first introduced as one of the antagonists on Metroid Prime Hunters for the portable DS, back in 2006. Then he showed up on the ending of Prime 3 on the Wii in 2007 (but only if you collected every upgrade, if I recall). There was also a Sylux easter egg on the 2016 3DS title Federation Force.

Given Zelda was shown 3/4 the way, and Mario at the start, I figured it had to be Metroid. Just didn't know if a remake or Prime 4.

Disappointed by the lackluster trailer - zero lead up or suspense. I couldn't tell for a moment if this was a remake of Prime 2 or 3, as it was so anticlimactic and drab in presentation.

The immediate focus on action has me concerned. Metroid was always about action, sure, but please please please let them add more exploration. Dread was dreadfully barren in this regard. Prime 1 was more exploration focused which I loved; Prime 2 and 3, you couldn't advance a section or play more than five minutes before the music ramped up and the area sealed off and a battle sequence ensued.

The last bit of the trailer showing the land and creatures was promising - open area with life and color. I want to explore the world(s) with minor everyday creatures to contend with, not room sealing one hit wonders at every turn.

Fingers crossed enough of Super Metroid and Prime 1 is mixed in with the new Metroid way of play. And like many, I would have preferred this be a Switch 2 release. If only for the hope that they add a sensor bar to the system for better motion controls (I know I'm in the minority here, though).

My son and I watched the direct together. I stood up from my chair and screamed "Yes, finally!" Not sure he understood my excitement, but it was nice to experience that moment with him 😄

This is absolutely going to end up being a Twilight Princess/Breath of the Wild situation and launch on two consoles. Hopefully it doesn't suffer being a Switch game launched on a better console, or a Switch 2 game being launched on old hardware.

Curious as to why they didn't take the opportunity to drop another Metroid Prime port today to take advantage of the hype. Or at the very least confirm we are getting Echoes and Corruption before it launches.

Metroid Prime: Eternal

First introduced back in Metroid Prime Hunters and teased in both Prime 3 and Federation Force, Sylux finally is in the spotlight! I can't wait to see what do they have in store for us.

After watching the trailer again, there are so many effects, particles and other things going on, and none of that typical lack of anti-aliasing, plus it all runs in smooth 60fps. This looks more like it's running on Switch 2 hardware.
Nothing else comes close to this on the OG Switch.

I'm so sad it got announced. I wished for it to be a proper Switch 2 title. It looks so good on Switch, I would have absolutely loved to see how amazing it would look on a more powerful hardware.
It launches in 2025, the year of the Switch 2's release. We waited 7 years, more like 8 by the time it releases. We can wait a few more months.

This looked absolutely incredible, and I guess I'm going to have to finish the recent remaster then.

Well, at least its an actual game and not just a logo after 7 years! Looks good. It'll very likely be the same as Breath of the Wild where it'll launch on Switch, but the better version will launch on the Switch 2 just like Zelda on the Wii U but everyone wanted it on the Switch and bought a Switch primarily to play it.

@Steel76 I’d say you try the MP1 remaster on Switch, you’ll see that they clearly used the MP4 engine as it also has visual features close to the trailer for Beyond

If Sylux is making a return surely it's about time they gave Metroid Prime: Hunters a modern update so players know his backstory. Maybe asking a little there. Also the environments look too good for just a regular Switch title imo I'm saying this is Switch 2, even though it has a Switch logo ident at the beginning.

I don't think it looks great; it looks OK. Really puzzling how this is what they come out with after so long, but maybe it's enough for fans.

Finally, a new first-party game for Switch! As a Wii U and Switch owner, this was my most anticipated Nintendo game even before Switch launched. At this point, I had assumed it would be released for the next hardware. If it runs at 60fps smoothly on Switch, I won't complain.

As someone who is pretty neutral about the Metroid series in general, I will say that this looks fairly lack luster to me. This looks like a late gen ps3 or early ps4 game title. It looks VERY dated.

Pretty underwhelming imo. It look like a GameCube game in both visuals and gameplay. Now, for the GameCube that would have been totally cool and even impressive, but we're like 23 years on or whatever, and it doesn't really look like it at all imo. It looks like it could just as well be DLC for the original Metroid Prime. Majorly meh.

Maybe it if were in VR or something like that I'd actually be properly interested in what they showed, and impressed. Then it would get my imagination going and actually make me feel genuinely excited about what a Metroid Prime experience like that would be like to play.

This games been ready for a while. Been in development for 5 years since 2019 with Retro.

The switch isn’t that powerful and doesn’t take too long to develop for.
Being held back for Switch release 2 next year also in Switch as well of course.

You probably tell I’m disappointed in Nintendo they have taken far to long to release the Switch 2 and time it gets here it’s gonna be so unpowered and no new third party titles will go near it.

They have strung the Switch out far too long and unfortunately with more remakes and games with new skins and Metroid 4 2025 my poor day one Switch is as good as RIP gathering dust.

@russell-marlow Because research indicates that numbered sequels suffer from diminishing returns. People just feel overwhelmed by the 3, 4, 5, etc next to the name, and think, well maybe I should have played all the other ones first! Sequels with subtitles rather than numbers is the way the games industry is going.

@RetroGames Also remember that the Switch isn't exponentially more powerful than the GameCube. With what extra power the Switch does have, they probably have devoted toward scope rather than graphics, which I must say is a better direction to take.

@RetroGames I have no idea what you are trying to prove with those videos. There's a big difference between that and what they have shown. Prime games have always looked great to begin with, but even with those improved textures it looks considerably inferior even compared to the remaster, which at the same time comes close but doesn't look as good as this.

I hope this one opens up the map a little bit. I feel like the really narrow, labyrinthine level design works a lot better in 2D metroidvanias than 3D ones. Though really I'm just looking for something to take up the traditional 3D Zelda format.

@roy130390 Metroid Prime was both graphically stunning for its time and pretty groundbreaking--and dang top tier quality as a game to boot.

4 is just more of the same in pretty much every notable way, it seems, but in higher resolution.

Kids have literally been born and grown into adults old enough to drink in the US in that time, some of whom have even had their own kids and so on. Think of that amount of growth and change for a moment, and them compare Metroid Prime to Metroid Prime 4.

Now, go back and compare say God or War on PS2 to the latest God of War of PS5 for example, in every area of the game. . . .

Nintendo is phoning it in as far as I'm concerned. And, maybe that's just an inherent issue with the Switch too, but it is what it is. And it's just left me completely underwhelmed.

Maybe I've been spoiled by VR or something--a revolutionary technology and experience that I actually find genuinely fresh and compelling and exciting and even truly magical at times--but I want more from Nintendo.

I'm positive that last shot is the same area from Other M, toward the beginning of the game

It’s odd how much the movement and combat hasn’t changed unless the intention is to do so after this intro sequence, there’s a lot of potential to give her the agility she has the 2D games and most players are used to that in first person games these days. Prime 1’s whole slower feel is based around the tank control of using a single stick instead of a dual stick setup, 3 changed this and felt faster but they don’t have the luxury of just having that as the only control mode for 4.

@Ulysses Ugh, as much as I'm excited about this long-anticipated game, I was really hoping Nintendo would also re-release or remaster the other Prime games.

I especially want to play Echoes again.

@RetroGames This is considerably more than a higher resolution. It's a combination of way better resolution, textures, particle effects, lightning, etc. If your game cube games came close to this then you had a magical console.

As for your analogy of kids growing up and change and for some reason comparing it to this... To begin with, I think that the large majority of gamers want their franchises to stay faithful to their core elements, specially gameplay. You can implement changes and new mechanics, but they have to be carefully thought out. An entirely new direction and inventing new things doesn't equal quality. They could make Samus ride unicorns and fart rainbows and include farming and dating mechanics as it has never been seen and wouldn't be expected but that doesn't mean that it's a good idea. Also, kids grow, become adults and have some changes like changing study for work, but in the end they still eat, sleep and keep in getting older. So core elements from being a human being stay the same.

I mean, I understand and respect if you are tired of the Prime formula or simply not interested anymore. I also understand if you don't care much about visuals, but I really don't see what you were expecting. After all, this is mostly a teaser/short trailer to confirm how it looks and that it will come to Switch. It's not an in-depth trailer about the game. We still don't know if there will be new mechanics and the scale of the game. That being said, the graphics alone make it an impressive trailer because it's running on Switch and it seems to be quite smooth while pushing it to it's boundaries.

One question: Will MP4 be a cross-gen title?

I think it will be...to demonstrate the Switch 2 advantage.

Nintendo would be crazy not to and it would still sell great on both systems.

All these years of developpement for this, a game that looks like Metroid prime remastered.

Finally something exciting!!! I've never played the prime entries, but there's never been a better time to start!!

Looks nice, but also very similar to the first 3 games. And I'm not referring to the graphics, rather the gameplay. I hope there is something new gameplay wise, pushing things forward a bit. I love MP 1 and 2, not so much 3, so would not complain about more of the same, but if they don't push it forward somehow it will just not have the same impact.

If MP4 is this fiscal year, It might just be a Switch title. And I would be happy with that. Wanting a next gen game kinda belittles the work Retro Studios have done here. It looks like a PS4 game all ready!
I reckon the next Direct will be Switch only too, with the announcement coming early next year (barring some sort of civil war!)

It's running at 60fps on the base Switch, that is impressive.
But how? Is it related to the game's size and scope? Hopefully not, this needs to be the biggest Metroid game ever.
It was previously rumored the game would feature open areas at least, but from what I'm seeing, it's looking as contained as the previous mainline Metroid games. Maybe we need to know more info soon?

Might be the Sa-x problem all over again with this new guy and his what I'm assuming Metroid posse? Not too big on this series (the first person gameplay gives me hives) but it looks promising.

@Ninfan no, original MP4 got killed before anything was shown to the public, because Nintendo deemed it not good enough to be seen by anyone I guess...

@kalosn I would say its a bit to early to judge MP4 by the first footage from the direct, but I guess we'll see.

I'm curious about what made Nintendo scrap the original MP4, maybe it wasn't up to The Big N's standards.

I didn’t expect it and was hoping it would be Switch 2.

My jaw dropped. They pulled it off. A full blown sequel, with all Retro Studio trademarks of Prime. No less running 60fps on what we presume is Switch hardware. Only 10hrs later after watching the direct did I discover the antagonist shown is from Metroid Prime Hunters.

Meanwhile, everyone is talking graphics and FPS (my self included)…

@Ulysses I'm not sure what you mean by exponential, but the Switch is basically a PS3 Pro, so it's well over a generation ahead of the Gamecube.

Disappointing for me for the prime reason that all we got was a glorified way of Nintendo saying Metroid Prime 4 is still in development and up to 18 months away. After 7 years since it was announced, that is really so lame. I hoped it would arrive later this year. It's amazing that Nintendo can pull a new Zelda from their butt without any notice yet MP4 is stuck in this enduring stasis.

Other than an actual release date, and I personally hoped for later this year, MP4 looks good. It was just no where near enough. If not a release this year, a few minutes more about the game and, say, a March 2025 release, that would be an acceptable compromise. As for a vague 2025, so many of us are writing that off as anytime early to mid 2025 and it become a Switch 2 launch title.

This looks incredible on the Nintendo Switch. Will this game be for the Nintendo Switch 2? İt can be possible. We will see.

Well, I was hoping for more. I mean they have worked on it for 5 years now and it looks no different than the remake we got. Dread looks far better 😕. Still going to play it, because it’s Metroid 😅.

I think the design and animation isn’t as good as it was all those years back. I hope this is something that is bound to change. Or maybe there are just crappier devs at Retro now than the ones that worked on the original.

Saying it will be released in 2025 is NOT a confirmation in my book. A solid date needs to be locked down, it's been 7 years already. I will bet it is going to be a dual system launch.

@Hyrulewarrior This game has been in development at Retro Studios since 2019. This game was FAR into development long before any specs for Nintendo's next-gen were even finalized.

Even if you try to target an area where you "think" the next console would be, you also have to think about the Switch version, so couldn't really do that either without is being a royal pain trying to squeeze a next-gen game into the Switch.

Also, the Switch has 141 million units sold and counting. It makes no sense to skip that audience and move the game to the next console where the install base is ZERO. Game development is not cheap.

Lastly, Metroid has never been a title that moved consoles. As iconic as the franchise is for some people, not everyone is into Metroid. This game obviously will be cross-gen and IF the rumors are true regarding Nintendo's next console, this game will be able to take advantage of the increased processing-power, increased GPU power, increased RAM, and DLSS. What they showed yesterday on a system that is for all intents and purposes and overclocked Wii U with and extra CPU core and ore RAM, even if it is just as power as the PS4 when docked, I have no doubt the game will look amazing.

Metroid Prime games have always ran at 60fps so I'm not sure why you're doubting it.

Nintendo knows that only FPS and racing games need to run at 60fps, which is why Mario Kart, F- Zero and Metroid Prime games always reach that level.
