Nintendo has today revealed the Japanese website for Endless Ocean Luminous, containing new details of what we can expect from the diving sim when it makes a splash on Switch on 2nd May.
The Japanese website is (shockingly) in Japanese, though TokyoGameLife has translated the newly revealed features so that we can see what's in store.
Let's start with the biggie: you can take selfies with the fish! Okay, that might not be the biggest feature, but it sure is cool. What's more, it looks like fish (and other underwater creatures) will be appearing by the bucketload as the website reveals that there will be at least 578 different critters for you to discover, snap photos of, and swim alongside.
You'll be able to choose what fish join you on your swimming journey, starting with a limited school but building up to something much more impressive as your diver rank increases.
The website also outlines diver customisation, online challenges and the ability to share codes so that your friends can explore the same sections of the ocean as you.
The thing that rings loud and clear in these new details, however, is just how much variety has been packed into this ocean. In the new screenshots (some of which can be found below) we get a glimpse at all kinds of underwater terrains including shipwrecks, corals, volcanoes and what looks like lost civilisations. It all sounds rather exciting, doesn't it?
Endless Ocean: Luminous is set to dive onto Switch next month. You can now pre-order the game from the eShop for £39.99 / €49.99.

Breath of the oxygen cylinder. Looks gorge!
At least 578 creatures is pretty impressive. I want to collect them all and take a nice photo of them. This will be Endless Ocean Snap.
Rediscovering Endless Ocean 2 on my hacked wiiu.. that is a solid single player experience (60 hours in now), nothing about the single player experience known?
I really really hope this is good!
I didn't need that info since DAY ONE anyway, but that's very nice.
I remember reading about Endless Ocean years ago in Nintendo Power magazine, but never played one. If the single player is solid, I’d be interested now. Besides meeting so many sea creatures, even having fictional ones like maybe the Kraken and Leviathan sounds fun.
After getting massively into Powerwash Simulator I can imagine me loving this game.
I didn't think I would buy this but it actually looks pretty fun. I thought it would just be sandbox/exploration gameplay but the checklists and challenges sound more like my kind of thing.
Still feel like I need to know a lot more, especially about the single player (is there a single player campaign?) and whether there's any actual story or plot we'll be following.
Is diver customisation purely cosmetic or will gear have an impact on say how fast you can swim, how much air you can carry, how deep you can dive etc
Is there anything to collect and catalogue besides fish, such as relics or places of interest?
This actually looks super comfy and relaxing, I can definitely use something like this in my current situation. And it coming out right before my birthday is even better!

I have never played an Endless Ocean, but always wanted to give the series a try so I'm looking forward to doing so with this quite promising new game!
This game looks pretty good and I love sea life. I'll be looking out for reviews and see if this game is worth picking up. Hoping for a demo so I can judge personally that way!
It looks nice, but my May game money is going to TTYD.
@Croctopus the first one was a bit lightm but the second one combines a story mode, with some salvaging collecrtion missions, fish healing missiosn, dolphin befriending and training, light museum management, and a number of substorylines..
I can't believe that it looks so good on Switch. This might be one of the best looking games on the system. I'm keeping an eye on this and would love to play this. It looks extremely relaxing and serene!
@Folkloner agreed, tried to translate some thing from the japanese site, but that didn't really give more info
Weird that all of nintendos releases are in May and June…reveal of switch 2 in September? Why not spread these out if aren’t clearing the way for a big announcement?
This seems like a nice palate cleanser to help cure the severe thalassophobia I will surely have after I finally get around to playing Subnautica.
Beyond Blue has been on my wishlist for an age, anyone interested in this might want to check that out for the time being until release. I've not played it, but it looks good and educational too

I love the first two Endless Ocean games to this day and I'm hoping this lives up to them. I would love it if Nintendo gave Arika permission to sneak a Splatoon reference in somewhere lol
@ozwally played it on apple arcade.. feels a bit too muc edutainment, less game
I loved the first game on the Wii so I'll absolutely be giving this a look. One thing I enjoyed about the original is the ability to play your own MP3 music files in the game, essentially customizing your soundtrack. It's a long shot, but I wouldn't mind seeing that in the new game.
@romanista I've been translating screengrabs from the Japanese site for the last hour. Here's some additional info not covered in the article above:
So that's confirmation that we're getting randomly generated dive sites, and not handcrafted locations. That's too bad.
I highly recommend anyone who enjoys or is interested in Endless Ocean check out Abzu in the meantime. It is currently on sale for $4.99 in the US (until 4/7), and is a) beautiful and b) mesmerizing. It's by Giant Squid Games, which has some of the minds behind Journey and Flower. Seriously, this is my favor to you. Buy it.
Seems like No Man's Sky but underwater. Might be worth a look once it's out.
This is gonna look so good on my TV. Can’t wait.
Sounds like it could be relaxing, but it's a bit of a bummer that there doesn't seem to be much of a single player component to it (at least so far), just confirmation of more online modes.
@Zaruboggan Came here to make the same rec - Abzu is lovely and well worth $5.
Smyths has a very nice pre-order price £32.99 (free delivery) https://www.smythstoys.com/uk/en-gb/gaming-and-tech/pre-order-games/nintendo-switch-pre-order-games/endless-ocean-luminous-nintendo-switch/p/236228 👍
Any indication of they are bringing back great music?
I didn’t play the Endless Oceans but I did play Everblue 2 on the PS2.
This is nice, looks like the game will have plenty of content. Definitely getting this.
I’m gonna play this in the tub for that VR experience.
@Ryu_Niiyama OLED?
@rainbowtick I would probably exclusively play DKC’s Aquatic Ambience😗
So excited my favourite game series/style is back, played it all the way back from Aquanaut's Holiday, Diver/Dolphin's Dream, Everblue 1+2, Endless Ocean 1+2. EverBlue 2 was one of my favourite games ever, collecting treasure and rare fish, took forever to 100%. Mazes of underwater corridors inside ship wrecks. Back way before there were any achievements. Now if only I could get a Pilots wings or Sky Odyssey style game again as well.
I’m just hope the online multiplayer aspect is for marketing and there is a solid single player game in there.
So excited for this game. I played the heck out of the first two, and this is looking even better, with more content to boot.
FYI, for anyone looking for something somewhat similar in the meanwhile, Abzu is the best option (if a bit short). Second to Abzu, there's also "Deep Diving Adventures," which I've replayed a couple times. With the latter, keep in mind there is an option to turn off damage from animals / the environment, which can make it more relaxing if you prefer.
Still, nothing really compares to Endless Ocean. I can't wait.
@ibookboyuk
Im loving supermarket simulator
