The first Paper Mario has a very special place in my heart. It was my first RPG and what got me into the genre .

@Otoemetry I don't think they were meaning TTYD was the first Paper Mario. They were specifically talking about the style of Paper Mario that 64 and TTYD had, cos after TTYD the RPG elements are pretty much non existent. Think they were just meaning they wanted to go back to the template that 64 set and that TTYD continued with and specifically mentioned 64 being quite special to them.

As for me, I'm excited by TTYD's success. Genuinely hope the success means we get proper 64/TTYD style Paper Mario back myself.

Yet another cheap rehash of an old game. I understand that most of Nintendo's devs are busy working away on Switch 2 stuff, but the lack of respect for the established user base is palpable.

Thrilled that SMRPG is on track to be the best-selling Mario RPG (besides if you count Rabbids) and this one also looks to be doing very well. Origami King was okay I guess but the dearth of decent Mario RPGs post-TTYD has been really, really rough.

@Electric-Dreams This is a remake, not simply a "cheap rehash", and also the Paper Mario games are made by Intelligent Systems, not Nintendo. Plus they just did both Fire Emblem and WarioWare games last year and by all accounts also have another Fire Emblem game sitting awaiting release. They're hardly sleepwalking.

This makes my heart happy. I've probably commented this under a dozen other articles, but Thousand-Year Door is my favorite game of all-time. If you've never played it before, I know you may be afraid that your expectations are being set too high. But I truly don't think you can oversell how good this game is; I think it will still absolutely live up to the hype for you.

It's truly a masterclass in gaming, and while I'll never be able to fully relive that experience of playing it blindly for the first time, I have total confidence that in a few years we'll finally get a wholly original, new Paper Mario game in this style with a rich style and characters and robust battle mechanics on the Switch's successor. Hopefully, there will even be remnants from the beta version of Sticker Star when it was going to be a direct sequel instead of a radical departure that ruined everything. What I would give for that game to have existed--one of the only tarnishes on the 3DS' otherwise almost perfect library.

For how poorly it sold, people sure have a lot of nostalgia for Nintendo''s little purple cube; as well they should. Plenty of the best memories from my childhood are tied directly to the GameCube. Unfortunately, none of the games I grew up with have gotten proper remakes yet, but with the apparent success of this and Metroid Prime, hopefully that will change.

Sometimes I don't even know why I like TTYD the most myself. I had my doubts about 64 when it released, having such big shoes to fill after SMRPG, but it managed to carve out an identity of it's own-- TTYD seemed to take all that was good in 64 and turned it up a notch. Characters, music, humor, and gameplay were major highlights for me. I won't be double dipping, but I'm glad a people will get to experience this classic (or again).

@Anachronism Had the DVD player on the ps2 not been a huge selling point, I doubt PS2 would have dominated that era as much as it did.

Hardware wise, Gamcube and Xbox were both ahead. If that player didn't exist, chances are that era would have ended with both Xbox and Gamecube coming in a close tie.

Hopefully this will get Nintendo to make more RPG games. Bring back Golden Sun

I’m happy for og paper mario fans. I’m currently debating on waiting for the remake or playing (my definitely and totally legal) copy that I have downloaded on my Mac.

Admittedly, I did really enjoy my time with Origami King. Hopefully they’ll spin off whatever ideas they have in the future as “paper luigi” or something similar rather than outright replacing Paper Mario’s formula.

Good to see people putting their money where their mouths are. If you want future PM to be like more like TTYD, I suggest supporting this remaster.

I'm personally waiting for reviews just in case the game has some outdated mechanics that don't make the game enjoyable.

This game deserves nothing but praise. I’m so happy to see this game in switches all over the world. It’s an all time favorite. Now I hope Nintendo takes heed that this is the paper Mario that many of its fans want and just be able to see that there’s money in bringing back their old classics. Windwaker/twilight princess and mother 3 would do well, Fzero Gx may not reach those sales but I think they’d make something worth their while.

I somehow missed this gem during the GC days, so I'm actually excited to finally play what many consider the pinnacle of the series.

@TYRANACLES They did bring back Wind Waker, and Twilight Princess. Both received an HD remaster. Only thing to do is port to both to the switch and charge full price for it.

@DripDropCop146 I'm not sure I'd count Twilight Princess. That remaster managed to accentuate the original game's graphical limitations while also messing up its art style. Hopefully, its next release will either be a more straightforward port or a complete visual overhaul.

It won't have sold out. Amazon UK do this all the time where an item vanishes then is back up a few days later. It'll be the same on the USA store.

And again, Thursday is the new release date in UK and a lot of other territories too. Surprised you haven't done an article to say UK pre orders have gone up £6 since your article last week too.

Hopefully this encourages Nintendo to remaster more GameCube titles. 😍

This and Sticker Star are the only ones, I have not played and beaten yet. I loved every Paper Mario, so this will be a great game, for sure.

Strangely I can't see anywhere that TTYD has topped Amazon's best seller charts like the article suggests. It's only the 10th best seller Switch game in the UK, and 38th in the USA. Certainly not above Dragons Dogma. Seems odd.

Edit: It seems like the article this one is sourcing from (comicbook.com) has a link to the Best seller chart for upcoming games, but the chart is sorted by 'featured' rather than 'best sellers'. So TTYD isn't top after all (it's 12th)

Well if you didn't like Color Splash I'm not sure you will like TTYD to be honest. I mean there is the combat system of course. That's very different in the two games and the GC game is better in that regard but honestly for the rest color splash was a very good paper mario game where it counts. It had great writing, an imaginative world, it was a gorgeous game and the music man. It's brilliant. Apart from the combat it's pretty much what you can expect from a paper mario. And what I've said there also applies to Origami King. Well except for the music which is very good, definitely as good if not better than TTYD but not as good as Color Splash. I suppose it's a bit more of a subjective matter but really Color Splash in my opinion has the best music in the entire series EASY.

Bottom line is if you didn't like color splash ask yourself why because it's not that different from TTYD. If what you didn't like is the combat, the lack of xp and the toads all looking the freaking same then fine, TTYD has you covered. But if it was the writing, the atmosphere, the humour, the world ect... then it's objectively pretty similar in quality in the two games. Plus no backtracking in Color Splash and no non-linear structure in TTYD.

Whew, I'm grateful for this article. I'm going to get this game for my wife for Mother's Day (it's one of her favourite games of all time and her most anticipated game this year). I'm in Canada and it's still in stock on Amazon, so I just preordered it right this second. I had no idea that it would be selling out so fast.

Even if the article is inaccurate, I was going to preorder it soon anyway. Better safe than sorry, in my case.

@DripDropCop146 yes I had them both for the Wii U but for the switch it would do so much better. The Wii U just didn’t sell well so it didn’t reach as many people.

A Paper Mario with the combat and writing of TTYD combined with the music and level design of Origami King would be a pretty incredible game.

I know it might be a little too early to gloat, but this game selling so well already just goes to show that old Paper Mario is and always has been far superior to any of the new stuff. This is proof that the old fanbase isn't just a vocal minority. Paper Mario bros... we are so back.

To all the fans of modern Paper Mario out there, I don't want to say "I told you so!" except I actually do, but if you want to play something truly special, all I can say is please buy this game. Not only is it a REAL Paper Mario game, but it's also really, really good on top of that. As someone who has the first three Paper Mario games among their favourites of all time, I honestly cannot recommend this remake enough. Once you play The Thousand-Year Door, you'll finally understand what us old fans have been talking about all these years, and you'll probably come to realise that we were right all along. You'll thank me later for it, trust me.

@GregamanX Thank you for being a spouse that celebrates your wife being the mother of your children. So many spouses take that for granted which to me is insane considering childbirth still has such a high mortality rate and no matter what a permanent impact on a woman’s body.

(suggestion: wait to pre-order (or order) this Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door until more new information about its content (such as its rate of frames) is available)

Happy to see this; this is the Mario RPG I'm much more likely to buy! Features a delightful art style that subverts the typical Mario art design without appearing off-putting, like Super Mario RPG (just my opinion).

Reading through the comments, I'm learning there's a whole generation about to be exposed to the greatest Mario RPG ever made, and I wish I were you!

Paper Mario gets worse with every release. HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE? Love the original, one of my all time faves...

That's very wild to me as it's not a game that needs or even really can be remastered. It's original style was it's charm. But they aren't rereleasing all these old games because they want to see them played again, it's just way easier to have AI tools upscale and clean up old games to be sold for a mint without doing any of the work required to actually make a NEW game.

I really want to play it, but I just don't $80 want to play it. Maybe in a few years when it goes on sale.
