If you've not tried out Sea of Stars yet, it's well worth a look if you're a fan of old-school RPGs. We called it an "instant classic" in our own review here on Nintendo Life, awarding it 9 out of 10 stars.

I didn't enjoy this game too much personally. I liked the setting, but the writing left alot to be desired.
Nothing about the Quebecois version being added, right? Gonna wait à little more then. Still got Spider-Man 2 and Super Mario Bros. wonder to finish anyways 😅
I really hope the characters actually grow later, I’m 13 hours in and the characters are so bland the main characters are the worst offender of this honestly.
I love everything else about this game but for me a rpgs story and characters are really important and honestly the game just isn’t delivering. I really want to like it, the music and art is so great! But I’m having a hard time honestly.
After taking some distance, I’d say that the two main characters could have been a bit more fleshed out.
Regardless, it’s still my GOT for all the charm, exploration, music and how it captures the magic that I’m desperately missing in most games now.
Just 100%d the game yesterday and never encountered any of these problems (shrugs)
great game fun little rpg that now means I have to play the messenger
I had to drop this game around 20 hours in. The gameplay is alright, and it gripped me for the first few hours, but the more and more I played, the more and more I just didn't want to play it anymore.
@DimBeau So weird that a Quebecois studio doesn't have a Quebecois version of their game! I get that English will be a higher priority for financial reasons, but you'd think Quebecois French would be added pretty early on.
@PinderSchloss So...you're saying...YOU ENJOYED YOUR TIME WITH THE GAME?
Physical?
Maybe?
@GamerDad66
I think they've confirmed it would release in cartridge form at some point. I'll be getting it when it releases. My rpg backlog is filled for now.
Played the first hour, was bored to death…
Gotta agree with other commenters. It looks fantastic, and the gameplay is solid, but the story and characters are a bit dull. The dialogue, especially, is… not the best.
I’m waiting for the physical copy to come out. I’ll be honest this game doesn’t have to be great, I’ll be happy just looking at it for its run time
Between this and Octopath Traveler 2 or Chained Echoes, which do you think it's the best?
@GamerDad66 yea. Early 2024, or you can get it in December if you order from Play Asia (Asian version but it has English on the cart)
@nkarafo
A good point. OT2 is a bigger game in terms of budget and personnel employed, so may be it's not a fair comparison. Actually I got all 3 of them, played a little bit of each not finishing any yet. To me OT2 is the best when it comes to the characters and story-telling. SoS got those super nice visuals and CE is a very solid RPG too. Not easy to pick one. I would recommend all 3 to the fans of the genre.
@Bydlak Thank you for your reply Bydlak.
I was too underwhelmed with it last month to bother redoing it all again anytime soon.
@nkarafo only played Chained Echoes out of those but if you are looking for a great story you are in to a treat. It is awesome and touches quite mature themes in tasteful ways. Strongly recommend!
@nkarafo I would avoid Chained Echoes. Its gameplay systems were insufferable for me personally. It got off to an amazing first impression. But I finally dropped it after about 20 hours, because I realized that I just wasn't having fun anymore. A real shame, because it was one of my most anticipated games last year.
I haven't tried Sea of Stars yet, but Octopath 2 is fantastic.
I want to play it, but we're waiting for the physical release...
This game is really good and really overrated. The story is very good but the characters are generally quite boring. The combat is fun but lacks depth. The game looks and sounds great but the progression system and "leveling" system is unimaginative and again, lacks any real depth. They've nailed the look and feel but really needed flesh out the characters both from a story and gameplay perspective. It's still a lot of fun and generally does scratch the SNES RPG itch pretty well.
Whoa, talk about a detailed list of fixes. What many people call "improvements, fixes and added stability" is clear this time. Thanks!
@Quiet2down I sadly agree with you. I wanted so much to enjoy this game, but noped out shortly after crossing the Sea of Stars.
I just finished the true ending. Very good game; took a while to really get its hooks in me, and there's a whole lot of road bumps along the way - it's certainly not perfect. (The regular ending left me pretty unsatisfied at the very end, which was at least more incentive to do all the completion needed for the true one.) But I think it's worth giving a shot if you're into what it's selling.
I'll be curious to see if this studio's going to do anything more like this again, because I'd absolutely be down for it, and just a bit more polish/depth/breadth now that they've got this foundation could make it even better.
Still playing The Messenger I kind of like the Metroidvania section but also have reservations… but eager to form my own opinion on the prequel… the unanimous praise it got upon release was a bit suspect and I’ve seen a little more reserved response since then…. but first gotta beat the messenger
Must say I dropped the game too (start of the 3rd? Act)
But unlike others that dropped it for (bland characters) I actually dropped it because the combat/battles dragging on.
It feels like combat is pretty slow to begin with (probably because the most effective moves have prolonged sequences)
But when every other enemy can either call extra reinforcements or heal themselves.......it just dragged.
Probably one of my personal biggest gaming disappointments this year
Just reading the comments and seems the game reception was way more mixed than I thought. I can see what some people say but I definitely had a blast with the game. Its sweet, short and fun for its content. I am too tired of 100 hour RPGs that overstay their presence so Sea of Stars was definitely a nice surprise. To me what really elevates the experience was the music. Its so good!
@rustedtin I really enjoyed The Messenger but I do think it's overated. A solid 8/10 but not at the level of the Shovel and Hollow Knights of this world.
@CoastersPaul
Given their track record, I'd like to see them try an ARPG and mix the strength of their two previous titles. And also bring back whoever was writing the dialogs in Messenger apparently.
@Quiet2down I didn’t pick it up exactly because if that. The writing in the demo was very bland. Weird because the messenger had outstanding writing. I liked how meta it got in the end as well.
I would have expected an rpg like this would have unlocked the full potential of the writers but alas.
@OorWullie
I have to disagree there. Messenger is an excellent game that does exactly what it sets out to do and is overall very well executed without being in over its head with how to handle things next.
What I mean by that is I think Hollow and Shovel both did a very typical indie dev mistake and that's way too much dlc. There are probably 3 people out there who can say they honestly played the entirety of these games. It's just too much game using the same basis and a loss of ressources. And look where that brought them. A couple side games that, while being fun, are nowhere near the glory of their predecessor and an overhyped sequel that's in development hell for all we know and let's face it has no real chance of ending up as praised as the first game because of its god tier status.
Meanwhile the Messenger guys are doing self contained experiences and sometimes that's just for the better. They already released a second game in a completely different genre that's well regarded. They get no licence fatigue like shovel does and no crazy overhype you can't reasonably satisfy like hollow has.
It's just a very good game that is way more inviting to be replayed like the good old classics it got its inspiration from.
Now I am not saying the base games for both hollow and shovel are not as good as messenger. They actually are but imo they should have left them at that because when you look at the bigger picture I think the messenger played its cards better. And I like this about it very much.
@nkarafo Octopath Traveler 2. I've only played that and Sea of Stars, but Sea of Stars is a game that kind of loses steam the further you go into it.. at least in my opinion. The characters are pretty bland, and the story is pretty predictable so far. Octopath Traveler 2 has a lot more going on, and the characters are far more engaging in my opinion.
@Wisps Ehhh, there are many options for RPGs that aren't 100 hours long, yet still have more imaginative stories or impressive characters. The NieR games are a prime example of RPGs that don't overstay their welcome.
I too was massively disappointed with this game. It was way overhyped, I think nostalgia got in the way for many reviewers. The writing is abysmal and the combat, while initially interesting, never really got going. The audiovisual aspect, however, is nothing short of amazing.
I absolutely loved Sea of Stars, and really hope we get some kind of sequel!
@VoidofLight I do love me some of NieR games! And the music... those feels!!
But I think I like both games in this case. To me Sea of Stars goes for a more retro inspired SNES feeling. Its clearly driven by nostalgia and that cozy feeling (unlike NieR games which have so much of the quality of Yoko Taro writing) that was the main driving force of pixel style turn based JRPGs.
Games that inmediately come to mind are Lufia, Breath of Fire, Golden Sun, Lunar, Mario and Luigi RPG, Quintet Trilogy and many others that kinda had this easygoing but fun approach to them! However I definitely agree that if you are expecting a huge grandiose story that blows your mind, Sea of Stars is not going to make it. It is a bit overrated in the sense that its not like the next-step in evolution of the genre but rather a nice nod to the nostalgia of games before it.
@nkarafo Actually, this is a very good game. But if you want a all new experience on switch, I would recommend you start with Octopath Traveler 2!
OK, thank you ALL for your opinions. I will choose Octopath Traveler 2 and maybe I will buy next Sea of Stars because I like snes RPGs. For example I liked very much Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana 1,2, etc.
@shadowii The Messenger is one of my favorite games ever. Enjoy.
@mlt Honestly I think the second and third Shovel Knight DLCs (Specter of Torment and King of Cards) were just as good as the base game. They added their own unique twists on the Shovel Knight experience in clever ways.
Those both felt like full sequels in many ways. Unless the first DLC, Plague of Shadows. Which was just alright, I thought.
If Yacht Club moved on after the base game, we wouldn’t have gotten these. And that would be a shame.
This game was okay. Had a good enough time getting the true ending, yet I already know I'll never replay it. It really won't go down in history as a classic. I'm glad I never encountered any of these bugs or softlocks, though!
@inkslinger It makes sense to me honestly. Quebec-French shouldn't be a huge priority when the default French language that everyone else uses and are ok with in so many other countries and places, is more important. I guess, maybe because its going to be so much easier to add the Quebec-French version, they wanted to focus on it later and prioritize the other things.
