Update [Mon Apr 3rd 2023, 09:15 BST]:
Nintendo has released a statement on its Japanese website to confirm that the joint venture company 'Nintendo Systems Co., Ltd' has now been formally established with DeNA.
Loosely translated, the statement reads:
"Today, April 3, 2023, "Nintendo Systems Co., Ltd.", a joint venture between Nintendo Co., Ltd. and DeNA Co., Ltd., newly joined the Nintendo Group. Nintendo Systems Co., Ltd. develops and operates systems and new services that deliver Nintendo entertainment to consumers.
"We aim to create unique entertainment innovations by fusing Nintendo and DeNA's respective commitments to entertainment and technology. The corporate website of Nintendo Systems Co., Ltd. has also opened."
As stated in the original article below, the company will look to strengthen "the digitization of Nintendo's business", utilising DeNA's technology prowess with Nintendo's own focus on entertainment.
The official website for Nintendo Systems is now live, though offers little regarding exactly what the company might be up to in the coming weeks and months. Having said that, the site's top page gives a little more insight into the company's goals:
"Nintendo Systems was born in April 2023, led by a team of engineers from Nintendo and DeNA, to create a system that makes it easy to deliver Nintendo entertainment to consumers.
"While there are many technological innovations in the world, while valuing the spirit of originality and flexibility, members with various strengths actively discuss, aiming for great results that cannot be achieved by one person, and sincerity in system development is working on.
"The technology surrounding the Internet is changing at a dizzying pace day by day, and is becoming more complex. Under these circumstances, Nintendo Systems will leverage the relationship of trust between Nintendo and DeNA, which has been cultivated through a partnership of more than seven years, and use Nintendo's originality and DeNA's knowledge of technology as the driving force to create new innovations for the world.
"Technological developments surrounding entertainment are expected to continue to develop. From obsolete technology to cutting-edge technology, we will continue to take on the challenge of bringing smiles to as many customers as possible through Nintendo entertainment."
Original Article [Tue 8th Nov, 2022 10:15 GMT]:
Alongside its quarterly earnings release, Nintendo has announced its intention to partner with DeNA and establish a joint venture company in April next year.
Nintendo has been working with the mobile firm since 2015, partnering to develop systems integrated into its mobile software (such as Super Mario Run and Mario Kart Tour) and Nintendo Account infrastructure. The new company will be a 'Specified Subsidiary' for Nintendo due to its 80% capital investment (of a total of 5 billion yen) being greater than 10% of Nintendo's value as a whole.
The new company will be based in Tokyo and known as Nintendo Systems Co., Ltd., with the stated goal of strengthening "the digitalization of Nintendo's business", according to the notice posted on Nintendo's investor website. It continues, stating that:
the joint venture company will research and develop, as well as create value-added services to further reinforce Nintendo’s relationship with consumers.
The company is scheduled to be established formally on 3rd April 2023, with Nintendo's Tetsuya Sasaki listed as the Representative Director and President.
Nintendo has made great strides in the mobile space in the last few years with the help od DeNA (that's pronounced D-N-A, by the way), with titles like Fire Emblem Heroes and Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp performing particularly well; the former was Nintendo's first mobile game to pass $1 billion in spending.
Nintendo states that it is "working to maintain and expand its relationship with consumers primarily through Nintendo Account," so it seems likely to stick with the current Account setup for future hardware. That is to be expected, but following on from previous generations, it's still a relief to players who thought they may have to migrate and link to another convoluted account system when the next Nintendo hardware ecosystem eventually comes along.
Let us know your thoughts on this joint mobile venture and what it means for Nintendo below.

I don't like where this is going tbh.
Mobile gaming is a huge horrible mess of nothing but games where monetisation is more important than fun.
Personally I see absolutely no incentive to pay attention to what's going on in the world of mobile gaming whatsoever. Especially when I have so so so many other "real" games I need to get through first
Way to make me feel like a total wally pronouncing it Deena all these years... 😰
@EarthboundBenjy @Yosher Doesnt look like mobile gaming specifically, rather a company set up to control the digital aspects of Nintendo's business. So Nintendo Accounts, online stuff etc.
Bad news for fans of good games. Near enough all Nintendo's mobile titles are some of the worst in their respective franchises (Pokemon, Mario Run, Mario Kart, Pikmin, Animal Crossing) I would rather they focus all their energy on their consoles.
This is very concerning, feels like Nintendo trying to move into the current era of monetization with their console games. All the things you see from multiplatform/Microsoft/Sony live service like FOMO, Premium Battle Pass, Microtransactions store, etc. infecting games like the next Mario Kart.
@Haruki_NLI Indeed, DeNA also is responsible for Nintendo Switch Online.
My money is only for console and handheld games, not for handphone games.
Translation: the end of Nintendo console gaming is at hand. Literally. They better turn around and come to their senses or it will be 1983 all over again.
@Kiyata 😦 Can you explain? I didn't take that from the article
@Haruki_NLI Not too sure about that but we'll see how this develops in the future.
Nintendo has been talking about their desire to expand Nintendo Accounts and value-added services for quite some time now. This is a slide from November 2021:
No doubt that this new Nintendo Systems subsidiary will contribute to Nintendo's next gen hardware platform.
@EarthboundBenjy not all mobile games are as bad as others. It all depends on how monetization is implemented and how generous a game is. If you cannot really keep up without spending than its a bad game. Personally I only ever spend small amounts of money if that investment speeds up the process of building units for example. I wouldnt spend hundreds of bucks just to pull a unit...
I look forward to hearing about a lot of mobile games on Nintendo that I won’t play.
@Poco_Lypso
I guess my threshold for whether "it's a bad game" must be tighter than yours. Because my stance is, if a game contains ANY amount of real-life monetisation baked into its progression systems, I'm just not interested. I have too many games to get through that don't require spending anything other than the initial purchase price.
I have enough unplayed games already - I don't need to deal with whatever's going on in the world of mobile gaming just to get some watered-down worse experiences that are also constantly trying to get me to buy junk.
I am excited for the potential of this new studio.
@gcunit Ive come the the comments section just to say Ive been pronouncing it "Dee-Nah" all this time
oh boy. More crappy phone games filled with gambling mechanics
Oh lord please have mercy, not more microtransaction filled mobile garbage. Anything but that, I beg of you.
@Bobb Do you want to jump off the same bridge as me? You can hold my hand if you like...
Wasn't there supposed to be a Zelda mobile game coming out? Not that it matters because it will be boring and F2P but I'd still like to hear about it
For all those who think this is bad news, remember that this kind of thing is nothing new for Nintendo. The Pokemon Company is basically this same idea, just focused on Pokemon. TPC didn't ruin Nintendo games or even mainline Pokemon ones, so I doubt this new joint venture is going to have a tremendous impact on the kinds of games Nintendo makes.
@EarthboundBenjy indeed! However, gacha games are different kinds of games. People enjoy them for what they are. Some are more predatory than others tho.
DeNA games are sh*t, dont know what Nintendo's thinking by working with them, i personally don't care for their mobile games and im sure this is nothing to worry about, at least for about one more console generation. Im nearing 40 so my gaming lifespan its reaching its end.
Lots of doom and gloom here by Nintendo fanboys that seem to misinterpret the business and only see "mobile = bad because monetisation" but this is definitely good for bringing in a new audience long term, it is especially good seeing Nintendo coming to terms with an evolving landscape where they too can have a big stake in without compromising their quality.
A lot of doom and gloom in these comments without knowing where exactly how this is gonna turn out, lol.
I’m excited for a new personalized digital Nintendo experience for, you know, a little more money than anyone wants to pay in the near future, because that way I know I’m special.
I’ve heard rumors that separately from the DeNA deal, Nintendo and Yuga Labs will have a joint company and they’re calling it, “Nintendo for Thee” or “NFT” and the possibilities are trendless.
This makes me sad. Modern mobile F2P games is easily one of the worst things ever happened to gaming in general.
I hate mobile games, but this sounds more like it's about Nintendo hiring someone to manage their online stuff. Idk why people are acting like Nintendo is abandoning their traditional games in favor of making more mobile stuff.
@Clyde_Radcliffe Mario Kart Tour is way better than Super Mario Kart imo
I'm I the only one that's not shock about this? it just seems like this was gonna happen eventually. I'm more shock that Nintendo hasn't outright bought them yet considering their relationship over the years.
@retroman64
This partnership has absolutely nothing to do with mobile games and any backlash is completely premature. The words "mobile games" are never even mentioned once in Nintendo's press release.
Well, I have no idea how to react to this news. I suppose it's far too early but it sounds like they have a plan.
Reading the comments, most of them really don't know what this actually means hahahaha.
Since DeNa helps out with Nintendo's online stuff, it makes sense for thrm to solidify their partnership. Here's hoping it leads to better online services for ol' Ninty.
Nintendo NFTs confirmed <---joke (hopefully)
This isn't about NFTs, its to do with Nintendo's online services on their next-gen system
So I assume this isn't just primarily on their mobile business based on the company description, at least I hope it isn't. Hopefully there's a macro advantage here for Nintendo in terms of both their HW/SW development side. They're mostly emphasizing "entertainment" and "technology" so I'm thinking this isn't just about games either though still focused on digital. This could also be something related to their online infrastructure moving forward.
All I see is moaning and talking of mobile games of you think that's what this is, yall really don't know anything ha ha this is a good thing. Truss me stop moaning without reading between the actual lines lol 😆
Pretty sure that‘s a saving money/business thing without any notable changes for the consumer.
@tievebauntraffic as i said, joke (the hopefully was because whenever a company now a days starts talking about the future of games, it normally involves NFTs)
@Grumblevolcano Ugh. Nintendo gonna go mobile only,..,,. Another Wii U disaster incoming
@Zyph
This joint Nintendo Systems company never had anything to so with mobile games, the only reason why anyone thought it had anything to do with mobile gaming is because they saw the word "mobile firm" in the title of the article.
Wow! Joint venture! Companies!
The takes on this comment section are something else, quite impressive amount of bad takes.
I thought this was an update to a 8 year old article b/c that's when I remember Nintendo announcing they were working with them, same time as they announced the NX.😂
Joint company, joint venture, offshoot, subsidiaries, all just different legalese terms for working together.🤷
Maybe they want to create console and phone crossover experience. Nintendo normally tries to innovate, so think outside the mobile phone gaming. This will be some mad-cap Nintendo scheme for sure
Hopefully this means they are going to improve Nintendo's online services.
I'm not terribly concerned, Nintendo has never chased trends and I don't think this is a hard commit to change core games based on the language presented. It would be generous to say Nintendo's online capability is lacking in some areas. Maybe this could help integrate platforms in a way that doesn't seem 15-20 years behind. That is non-trivial so maybe a partnership will help.
Good to see some comments actually got from the start that this was about "a joint venture [... that] develops and operates systems and new services that deliver Nintendo entertainment to consumers" and not mobile games, wish this venture the best!
Every time this has come up, people ignore the details in the article that explains the focus on digital accounts, NOT MOBILE GAMES. Nintendo even said that they were slowing down investment in new mobile titles for a while. This is to fix their online infrastructure that is way behind the competition. Considering how many on this site agree that Nintendo could do better in that area, you would think people would be more optimistic.
Anyone remember when Nintendo was against mobile gaming and said that Nintendo I.P.s won't be in mobile games? Yeah looks like they had a change of heart. Amazing what a few million dollars can do.
@westman98 I never mentioned it actually is for mobile. Even if it is, it's not the end of the world. I only stated that hopefully it's not just for mobile. All things considered this is a good thing if it means Nintendo can up their business that could benefit all.
When the article was first published I had a few laughs as well on why on earth people would assume it's already mobile just because DeNA is involved. Not to mention the disdain they have on the topic.
It's premature to say much of anything. A deal can go negative, or positive for one, more, or all parties involved. We'll find out more in due time. Edit: Especially since the successor to the Switch is likely close by, in terms of years.
So anyway since we're all talking about mobile games. It's a shame that some of them can actually be really fun games when they have horrendous and ridiculous paid option prices. Something really should be done about this monopoly and I'm serious.
Just an awful mess. At least some of the f2p can really be f2p if you can not get brainwashed by the monetisation. Unfournately though, not all are like that but at least some are.
I'm not on about the article, just came to say this though.
Anyone who plans to play mobile games, also be very careful and very aware of this.
There are some excellent mobile gachas. Really play a Cygames game and you'll be surprised how generous they be. I'm talking getting more character development and story than from console games such as Xenoblade 2 for example, and for free too. Never thought I'd have a mobile game listed as an all time favorite ost until I played dragalia lost.
Unfortunately, the only good gachas rarely survive the Western markets long enough because, well a lot of them are niche outside of Japan. People don't care about opening their phone to read great stories, they rather play lame casual 5 second fun monetizers like candy crush. Plus, outside publishers can get greedy just look at how Crunchyroll handled Cygames' Priconne recently. Japan has the only market and culture where that stuff has communities who can keep the good mobile games chugging.
Anyways I have despised DeNA ever since what they did to BloodBrothers. I really hope this joint venture doesn't influence Nintendo in the wrong ways.
This is great and probably necessary to keep producing, protecting and developing what we all love: Nintendo quality games and IPs on a new NES that will soon be coming. I am very excited!
@DemonKow
Of course they has chased trends. DLC and online behind paywall.
Businessman Mario is a good Mario.
This doesn't necessarily have to do with mobile games. It could be a new initiative to improve Nintendo's Eshop and NSO services.....which is sorely needed at this point.
