We're back once again with another review round-up and this time it's for NieR:Automata The End of YoRHa Edition, which is arriving on the Switch next week.
This action RPG first made its debut back in 2017 on PS4 and Steam. This latest version of the action RPG gives players access to all of the previously released DLC - plus costumes exclusive to the Switch release. Here's a bit more about it from Nintendo's website:
"The critically acclaimed world of NieR:Automata invades Nintendo Switch! When machine lifeforms from another world attack without warning, unleashing a new type of threat, mankind is driven from Earth and takes refuge on the Moon. As 2B, a member of the android military force YoRHa, immerse yourself in a ferocious battle to take back the planet."
Update: Our own review is now live — check it out for the NL verdict:
And here's what other critics said about the Switch version:
GameSpot thought NieR got "enough right on Switch" to make it worthwhile checking out:
"Nier: Automata gets enough right on Switch that it's still definitely worth playing here. Combat still feels smooth, loading times are reasonable, and in the several hours we tested, it was easy to forget it wasn't running on a PlayStation or Xbox."
Pocket Tactics awarded the Switch version a 9 out of 10, noting how there were "little to no noticeable comprises":
"Nier Automata is one of the best games from the previous generations of consoles, and it has made the jump to the Nintendo Switch in a mind-bogglingly impressive fashion. Little to no noticeable compromises have been made to get it onto a handheld system, and the magical, inventive nature of the thing sings just as loud as ever."
Nintendo World Report gave the PlatinumGames' title a perfect 10/10 score, mentioning how it's "one of the best third-party Switch ports yet":
"This might be the best third-party Switch port I’ve ever played, which makes it incredibly easy to recommend this game to anyone who has never played it before. There are simply no two ways about it: NieR Automata was a triumph of design in 2017, and it is a triumph of porting big games to Switch in 2022."
Gaming Bible also praised it, labelling it a "fantastic port of a phenomenal game":
"Nier: Automata on Switch is more than good enough to finish endings A to E all over again if you’ve done it already - this time from the comfort of wherever the hell you like. And for newcomers, this port is of such a high standard that you’re guaranteed to not come away feeling you’ve had an inferior experience compared to that of pals who played this wonderfully singular hack-and-slash-and-cry-a-bit ‘em up on other platforms. It’s a showcase for how the Switch really needn’t be a ‘lesser’ system than its console-generation peers, when a port’s in the right hands."
And God Is A Geek gave it a 9/10 - summing it up as "essential" and "still bonkers" despite some hardware setbacks:
"I can’t tell you it’s the best version, and I can’t tell you that you need to rebuy it, even though I’m sure Mr Taro would love me to. But I am so glad I played it, as it’s a reminder that no matter how old you get, or how many games you play, there are special moments that will always stand out from the others.
"NieR: Automata The End of YoRHa Edition is brilliant. It’s a little rougher than its big brother versions thanks to the hardware, but the heart and soul is present, the story and combat are excellent, and the idea of actually being able to go to the toilet while playing it somehow feels like some sort of meta endgame for the title that even the biggest of fans couldn’t have predicted. Still essential, still bonkers. Play this game."

These reviews are too good; I was hoping to save money and not buy this instantly.
It really is a great game. Played it on both PS4 and Xbox one. I'll likely play it again eventually on switch.
Pre-ordered this, along with Person 5 Royal! Very excited. It’ll be my first time taking a crack at either of these games
Snagging this for sure.
Glad to see that it's a good port. Really low price point for a physical release too (in Australia at least, dunno about elsewhere). Definitely grabbing it day one.
Yeap day one buy for sure on the physical version.
Is Nintendo Life gonna review it, or is it content with forgoing one in favor of simply re-posting a round up of glowing reviews of the game from other websites?
Never played it before, but glad the Switch port came out good. Looks like another one for the wishlist!
Now if we could just hear more about No Man’s Sky…
Works for me. I was gonna get it anyway but this is icing on the cake. My only issue with the xbone gen is that I have way more duplicates than ever. If the switch successor is just a more powerful iteration I am just gonna wait on multiplats from devs that usually support Nintendo.
@Andy_Witmyer Yes, as mentioned at the bottom of the round up - Nintendo Life will be reviewing it soon. It will hopefully be out at some point next week.
@Divide_and_Wander We should have some NMS exclusives coming next week - so be on the lookout!
Have this pre-ordered. Looks like another miracle port then.
"little to no noticeable comprises" I'll let digital foundry be the judge of that lol
I may have to get this to tide me over until Bayonetta 3 drops at the end of the month
Welp, there ya have it. I canceled my pre-order due to playing other games but maybe ill reinstate it.
I hated this game. It just didn’t click with me at all. That said, I’m glad it made the jump to Switch in one piece.
Glad to see the port was done well.
The sad thing is I have it on PS4 and PC but only want it for switch physical.....if it wasn't physical I wouldn't have bought it.....playing it portable thru steam deck is so amazing makes me wonder how much longer can switch hold out with the low portable power until it finally gets an upgrade .
@Would_you_kindly
DF these days are mostly aimed for players who spends their time playing on paus and 250 % zoom.
What a great game. It's something I can see myself replaying in a few years and enjoying it even more. I got all the endings and did it all 100%. Replicant is calling my name......
I pre-ordered this and I know nothing about it, so glad to see its one of them good o'l miracle ports. Not that i'm too fussed about compromises/downgrades but it sure is the icing on the cake of a clearly very much adored game.
That £30 price tag was easy to swallow too, they could have easily charged £50 for this and I would've still grabbed it. very happy girl ^-^
cant wait to play this along with bayonetta 3 and mario rabbids 2.
Always been interested in playing this on ps4 but never got round to it. Just seen these reviews and preordered straight away. Cant wait to give it a go now
@Nanami_Ataraxi I’m in same boat as you. Never played it but just pre ordered from game collection as had a lot of points stored so got it for £23 👍
Some day I'll play my (still sealed) copy of the game that I bought three years ago now for PS4.
... some day...
@SuperBiny64 Yo! Same!
I'm hope that the game will look good in handheld mode... 3D-games(especially fightings...) on Nintendo Switch in handheld mode usually looks bad, awful, or, in 3 words - too much blurry. That fact annoys me. And Nintendo Switch Lite users too, probably...
Nice to see another great PS4 game with a playable Switch port. Persona 5 Royal should also be good since the original game ran fine on PS3.
@tonyp1987 Steam Deck availability is still even worse than PS5, and the best models are expensive. I don't expect it to give Nintendo a run for their money this year or next, but I'm excited about the future of handheld PC/Steam gaming.
This is the port I really wanted more than any other game. It took 5 years but it's totally worth it!
Just goes to show if you actually work on a port well you can do amazing things.
Also the Steam Deck is a niche product. As much as I complain about Nintendo, it's highly likely that they will remain the kings of portable play. People act like the 3DS didn't have inferior technology pretty much since it came out and it still did really well.
I remember how people held this up as an example of a game that would never run well on Switch, so I'm super happy to see this was ported with the care and attention this wonderful game deserves.
Very much a GOTY-tier release alongside Persona 5 Royal. Nintendo-only gamers are eating good in October.
With this and Persona 5 Royal coming, it's hard to deny the Switch is now the undisputed champion of (edit:) good games out of any system.
It feels more and more like I do not need to buy any consoles besides Nintendo's anymore. With a little bit of patience most games I could be interested in will be availabe.
Yay! I was afraid of the play-this-on-any-other-available-hardware-to-you situation which is one of my pet peeves when it comes to switch games because most of them are poorly optimised but praised anyway
@Cia Wait, Nier is an RPG? I was excited to buy it until I read this…
I'm down, let's go.
The game looks interesting, but too bad it seems to have the same broken healing mechanics as BOTW. You can just spam heal items in the pause menu which makes you almost invincible. Why are modern developers so afraid to make games at least a little challenging?
@TeddyBearSolid Nice! Hope you have a blast playing both
@Cia There are still many important RPGs missing on switch. Elden Ring? Fallout? Dark Souls 2 + 3? Dragon Age? Mass Effect?
Excellent. I have this preordered, can't wait to play it for the first time.
People were saying this couldn't run on Switch and here we are. Yet another example that good optimization is key.
@mereel Noooooot really an RPG. It's much more in the vein of an open world Bayonetta.
Nier: Automata is one of the greatest games I have ever played in my life. Everyone that enjoys story-driven video games needs to play this game. I've thought about this game several times a week for the past couple years since I've played it. It is truly a masterpiece of storytelling.
@mereel It's not really an RPG. It's much more of an action-adventure open world hack 'n slash game. There's a few RPG elements, but don't let that deter you from playing one of the greatest games ever made.
@Nanami_Ataraxi Oh good. Try to go in as blind as possible. You will NOT be disappointed.
@FishyS This game was in my backlog for a long time. I made a big mistake by not playing it sooner. I don't mean this lightly, this game should be at the top of your playlist. It's one of the greatest games I've ever played in my life.
As this was my number one game on PS4, I'm really struggling with whether or not to double-dip even though I've seen everything. I'll probably break down and do it.
I played the game on the PS4 for a bit but just didn't really get into it. Didn't DISlike it but I also never felt compelled to finish it.
@B_Lindz t. Funny enough, I bought this at launch on Steam & still haven't bothered to finish it yet. Fantastic looking game & all just can't stick to it for some reason.
A friend tells me from my description of where I was, I did make it past the halfway mark at least.
Looking forward to NL's review when it drops. This game is definitely on my radar, but it'll be a bit before I grab it.
Have this pre-ordered physical along with P5R for Switch.
I didn't like it as much as most people did but the true ending is definitely an experience worth having and one I don't think I'll ever forget. Soldier through it if it doesn't jive with you, that ending makes it all worth it.
@DiggleDog ummm…step your tastes up and give it another shot
@B_Lindz
Oh I intend to. I'm super excited, thanks! ^-^
@Richb101
Ooh even more of a bargain
I'm sure it won't disappoint for that price!
Day one purchase confirmed!
Awesome can’t wait to get my hands on this.
This just adds to a plethora of soils looking titles coming out this month
"One of the best impossible Switch ports" is what I keep hearing.....can't wait till October 6th 👍
@Nf157
Is this the same game, or is it very different than those versions?
@Nanami_Ataraxi yep with this and persona 5 later in the month should keep me happy and busy
@Richb101 Persona 5 royal and Nier Automata, finally on Switch, in the same month...🤤...I still can't believe it
@FishyS Same! October is going to be brutal!
Glad to see it made the jump intact. I think it's fair to say Switch has more of Platinum's best games than any other platform now, though I wouldn't complain if the rest got ported over, too.
Cool! Still won’t play it but cool! When’s new switch hardware so ports aren’t as concerning anymore?
For anyone who hasn’t played it yet, you’re in for a real treat. It’s an absolute masterpiece. So glad to hear that the Switch port is solid.
Happy to hear this, I missed out on this on PS4 so I'm glad to see my preferred platform is not gonna have an unplayable port.

NieR Automata, Persona 5, Among Us in Fall Guys, and Bayonetta 3 all in October. This month will be a great month for horny anime fans.
Nier Automata was probably my most-wanted port on Switch. I’ve waited a long time to experience this game, so it’s a relief to hear the Switch version is suitably well-done. Just a few more days to pick up my preorder!
@blecch actually the process for steam decks are improving a lot......I have a steam deck and loving it.....they said if you order now you'll have a unit by Xmas.
One of my favourite ever games so I'm glad to see the port does it justice.
My enthusiasm for Bayonetta 3 has all but disappeared, partly because I've never been one to buy game after game from the same franchise. But also because I just haven't been that impressed with the trailers. I'm thinking this is the game I should get to scratch the "weird action" itch.
I'm a little concerned about how positive the reviews are, since SE tends to botch their ports. Has anyone confirmed how it performs on Switch, specifically in handheld?
@RiasGremory Mario rabbits is my most hyped game of the year lol. Can't wait
@chipia you're definitely not invincible in the game. I got the platinum for it and I gotta say it was hard as fu*k . Highly recommend it, it will make you cry lol
@Amrulez same game, though this switch version has some extra skins to put on 2b.
@Would_you_kindly "noticable" being the key word here. If you need to run analysis software to detect some framedrops it hardly qualifies as "noticable"
It’s terror that the game is already on my switch, but I can’t play it until release date 😟🙃
@Divide_and_Wander Some gameplay leaked yesterday on twitter, due to some early physical copies in France.
Preordered from SE to also get a t-shirt, but there is a 4 week delivery period, so I will probably be playing Bayonetta 3 when it arrives. Good thing it's an old game, so I can be patient.
YASSSSS i was hoping that ports gonna be good.
When Switch launched, it was seen as a faster PS3, having native PS4 games one day run on that little console like that was just not even worth imagining.
Some ports really are messy, but its always great when a good one finds its way.
Surely gonna get this at some point
Never had any interest in this on the PS4, but after watching the
reviews it really does look fantastic, plus with Platinum Games behind it I know it'll be brilliant. I will always trust the people who gave us Bayonetta.
Never played it, I know very little about it — do I need to have played the original Nier first to properly appreciate it?
@Nin10doh Thanks for the heads up! I watched a few clips and it seems to hold up pretty well! Very reassuring.
Glory to mankind
If I hear it's not blurry in either mode - then I'll be on it.
SquareEnix deserves a ton of credit for making a high quality miracle port AND pricing it reasonably.
@Type_Trubbish It also had fantastic reviews on PS4. Also made by the wonderful folks at Platinum Games. Maybe you were just waiting for a Nintendo port.🤷🏾♂️
I’m really torn on whether to finally experience this game on Switch or Steam Deck.
I hear the Steam port wasn’t handled as well, but has improved since.
I haven't played this yet, despite owning it on PC.
Good thing to see another mature game on Switch. Only wish it had come earlier and closer to the original release - for the sake of marketing.
@MajinSoul without a side by side comparison weather or not it's noticeable is up for debate
Can't beat the price of 39.99 either! 💪Cant wait to finally play this!
Yup; I’ll be buying and playing!!
@Cia a better version on xbox came out years ago 4k 60fps and persona 5 will be on xbox game pass ..... So much for that . 2 games that were out 3-5 years ago.
@Streetmeat
Yeah, but those two games are among all time best. AND we have Nintendo exclusives in addition.
@brunojenso
Looks like you're buying it then. I can't say I've noticed blur and I've played it both in handheld and docked for about 35 hours now.
@Andee
Definitely not. I understand there are some references but it hasn't felt I've missed anything thus far 35hrs in.
@Rosona awesome - that is great to hear - thank you. Hopeful other companies can learn from this porting success!
