The first trailer from the upcoming Super Mario Bros. movie — unsurprisingly named The Super Mario Bros. Movie — has been revealed in a special Nintendo Direct presentation, and we've got our first official look at Mario. Early fan reaction seems to be positive, although there are lots of people on Twitter who think Mario in his movie guise looks a little familiar.
Specifically, there's chatter suggesting that the plumber bears more than a passing resemblance to Fix-It Felix, the handyman hero from Disney's Wreck-It Ralph.
Felix was, of course, an homage to Mario himself — or more specifically Jumpman from the original Donkey Kong — so it's no real surprise that there's a similarity. However, as you can see from the samples, plenty of fans are picking up strong vibes from this slimmer, trimmer version of video gaming's most famous face:
And of course, the resemblance is even stronger with the slimmer Mario brother:
From our point of view...yeah, kinda. However, bearing in mind Felix's origins as a reference to Mario, of course there's going to be a resemblance, especially if Mario slims down a bit. Now if you remove the moustache...
Let's open the floor up for discussion, shall we? Are you getting Felix vibes from Movie Mario? Let us know if you're feelin' it in the poll below.

Cue Principal Skinner thinking to himself:
“Perhaps they look like each other because Fix-It Felix was created as a parody of Mario… No, Mario is the copy.”
Not exactly surprising all things considered, but it is a pretty noticeable resemblance.
Meh looks like a 3D cartoon character from the 2020s; they all look the same!
This is not a real thing. People just need something to tweet about
@Anachronism Because Felix was a Mario parody?
There both 3d animated films with a pretty good sense of lighting, now you can say what you want about wreck it Ralph but I did enjoy the lighting in that film as well. But hen again, Felix was supposed to sorta act like Mario, game in universe game wise.
(even tho oddly enough he existed in said universe.)
@Ear_wiG Yes, CGi has been looking safe and stale for awhile now.
The only people that tried to do something new were the people behind the Spider-Man animated film back in 2018.
The animation here is nice I'll give it that, but it doesn't look like anything special.
What was that person who saw realistic Mario smoking? I don't see it.
@Olmectron Yes. But also, I'd say the way they're animated is closer to Wreck-It-Ralph's style than the Mario games'.
I want what these people are on.
It’s funny, because ignorance. I mean… it’s good to remember that Mario is well-known enough that the most casual of gamers can recognize him and know nothing about him — why some of those people feel confident enough to sport a condescending tone, is the less funny part.
Yeah, they do look very similar, but Disney’s Fix-It Felix is obviously inspired by Mario, so the resemblance with a CG-animated Mario would be almost inevitable. No complaints here, though!
@Anachronism Well, yeah. This is not a game animation, it's a movie animation.
@DripDropCop146 Don't forget the Peanuts Movie, that was probably the first big 3D animated film to push the boundaries of what can be done with CGI.
@Olmectron And? A prerendered cutscene is basically the same thing as an animated short. Also, I'm still not sure what we're arguing about.
@mystman12 Oof, my fault. I forgot that movie haha.
@mystman12 that film was so charming!
I see it but it's really just the animation style. The eyes match up very well
Everyone complains.. oh well I think it looks great!
Shocking! Donkey Kong resembles King Kong!
Nitpicks. Nitpicks everywhere.
What I wonder is if the move Mario design will be used for reference in future games. So far it looks really good, so maybe they'll tweak Mario in games so he can look more like in the movie.
So this is NLife for the next 6 months?
I know lots think it but I’m not one of them. Honestly, I don’t see it. 🤷♂️
Removed - unconstructive
I actually think the design is really charming. We didn’t expect it to look exact, and I think it’s way better than what we could have ended up with.
@Guitario same.
I knew it reminded me of something!
Not even close.
@PinderSchloss Oh I wouldn't be surprised to see these exact comments once they reveal DK xD
Lol "Fans" *coughing..
Uhh no just no they dont look alike.
And for this trailer, just amazing cant wait for it to come out.
I don't generally like leaving comments saying this whole article is just stupid, but this whole article is just stupid.
@locky-mavo
First it was the whole Mario is dying thing, then it was Reggie writing a book. The next thing for nintendolife to milk to death is this teaser I guess.
This has nothing to do with Fix-It-Felx. We are just not used to see Mario with an expression on his face. Let's face it. He was nothing but a blank slate for the last years.
Yeah, a little bit. But now that we saw Mario in motion, he doesn't look bad. In fact he looks quite good.
Fix it felix was of course based on Mario (Jumpman) from the game Donkey Kong.
@Ear_wiG We can at least take comfort in the fact that it isn't the CalArts art style that we have seen in recent years. That art style butchered many a beautiful animated franchise. About the only one that was halfway decent was Steven Universe.
I don't see it. Mario looks like Mario in this movie, unsurprisingly.
@PinderSchloss Don't tell Universal! They'll sue Nintendo!
The comparison must be spot on, because without looking at social media or comments at all, after watching the trailer, I said to my wife that Mario reminded me of Fix It Felix. I'm happy to be validated.
@PinderSchloss Universal Pictures here another lawsuit, oh wait... we can't sue you, because we gonna make a Donkey Kong movie by Illumination and we need Miyamoto help.
Well Felix is basically just Disney Mario so I definitely understand the connection. I think it's just a coincidence and nothing more but it's still a cool observation nonetheless.
Bowser did appear in Wreck-it-Ralph after all...
They look like white dudes with round noses and similar hair color...
They look similar in the most superficial way and I have no idea why NLife posted these tweets from a handful of randos like its some bigger deal than it is.
Movie Mario literally just looks like Mario
Well, he does look like Mario for the most part, regardless of other resemblances. Except something is a bit off, but still Mario.
I got more Fix-It-Felix vibes from the version of 1-1 music that played when he fell into the mushroom kingdom.
I don't like Mario's mouth. It's the same problem with the Sonic Movie trailer before the redesign. Strong uncanny Valley effect because the teeth are freakishly realistic. Otherwise, I have no complaints about the movie and am incredibly excited.
I personally think that Fix It Felix resembles Mario, not the other way around. I think that was kind of the point with Wreck-It Ralph.
@calbeau doesn't seem like people are nitpicking as they are just joking, whether it's funny or not is the real question
@BirdBoy16 Definitely some of them are. Sadly, based on what I've observed, many more are genuinely nitpicking and will continue to do so long after the movie's been released.
No, he looks like Spongebob.
But for real, NO. He looks like Mario wtf
@calbeau I’d say more than some but ok
I don't see much of a resemblance between Felix and Mario, but maybe that's just me. If you gave Felix a mustache, then maybe it would be closer, but otherwise I think Mario's design is on-point.
I like that there's any option for people who don't understand the question. Hahahaha good one!
There is no resemblance at all. Call me crazy but this is literally a 'Political move' to tweet this by obsessed left wing people, its an attempt to 'rewrite history'. Wreck it Ralph is based on Donkey Kong and even has Bowser a cameo, 'but Mario gives you Felix Fix it vibes' just by a short trailer which basically doesnt seem to divest much from how Mario is portrayed in the Games? Dont see this as some 'innocent ignorancy' its a subliminal jab.
