Nintendo has released a new trailer for the long-awaited Switch port of Persona 5 Royal, shining the spotlight on the game's iconic animated cutscenes and slick gameplay.
The huge JRPG from Atlus launches later this month on October 21st and it's safe to say we're pretty excited! If you're unfamiliar with the game, it initially launched on PS3 and PS4 in Japan back in 2016 before making its way worldwide in 2017. The 'Royal' upgrade came a couple of years later and added several enhancements, including a new playable character, a new location and Palace, new music, and additional social elements.
Persona 5 Royal won't be the only game to grace the Switch either. Both Persona 4 Golden and Persona 3 Portable will be launching on the system at some point in 2023.

Fingers crossed for a good port with acceptable performance and fair price.
@ketrac it's full price
What a world we live in where Persona 5 on Switch, Mario+Rabbids 2 and BAYONETTA 3 all come out within a week of each other
@ketrac Fair price is $60 on every console
Even though I have a PS4 digital copy, I'm buying a Switch copy on general principle and for the collection.
@ketrac Dunno about other regions but the pricing is kind of absurd in Australia. Most brand new retail games release at an RRP of $79.95 here but for whatever reason Persona 5 Royal's RRP is $99.95. NieR:Automata on the other hand is only $54.95 so that's a $45 difference between the two ports. Thankfully we also tend to get good sales at launch here so I'll be getting a physical copy for $79 which is slightly more palatable (but still higher than I'd like).
Happy for those who haven't bothered to play it on the other platforms, personally will be skipping. I've had my fill of Persona 5.
I'd like to get P4 and P3 instead, since those are not as easy to play nowadays (well, 4 is on Steam now).
I totally (sarcasm) didnt see another trailer coming out ahead of this games release
@BenAV Is it some government import tax thing?
@Rika_Yoshitake Some people say that about Fifa. Let's hope for the best.
I haven’t even played persona one yet
@ketrac Shouldn't be considering it's just a local physical release like any other game that releases here. No idea why it's priced so high.
I already have the PS4 version of Persona 5 Royal on my PS5, which I still haven’t started, but I’m mightily tempted to grab this Switch version and play it lying back in bed or on the sofa while my wife is watching something on TV.
[NOTE] This trailer has been on the eShop for roughly two weeks now.
Too bad we only get Royal and not the original Persona 5. I read that the original is better balanced, because the changes to the Royal version make the game too easy.
Haven't played any persona game before, so I'm really excited to play it. Between this and Nier, I think I'll be covered for the holidays.
I'm not gonna buy this again but imo this is one of the best games of all time, and if you haven't played it PLEASE do.
Isn’t this trailer just a reupload of the one from this article?https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2022/09/persona-5-royal-switch-special-edition-will-take-your-heart-pre-orders-open
It's nice to see the games also on Switch but releasing after so much time is the bad thing. I played these games on better systems long ago. One of those dry seasons for us that keep up with the new games.
Definitely grab this one for the Switch. Even at full price, it'll still be worth playing it again for me. The only disappointing part of this one, the limited edition for this multi-console release is sorely lacking.
Game came out of nowhere only to become one of the defining experiences on my PS4. Enjoy, guys. Wish I could experience it for the first time again.
Counting down the days
Just take my money already!
Isn't that just the Take Over Trailer? .-.
@fenlix Yes
@chipia P5 is easy in all its incarnations. With that said, Royal's QoL changes, massive story additions, new characters, etc. only make it a better experience all-around. You're not missing much by not having access to the vanilla release.
I think what I'll do is wait on this for a bit and get Nier tomorrow instead. Whatever I happen to be playing in November is going to get dropped immediately for Pokémon and I have a chance of clearing Nier by the time that rolls around.
Got my steelbook edition preordered. The wait is almost over now.
@chipia it’s the same thing that happened with P4G. P4G was way easier then P4 vanilla because of the balance adjustments + added game mechanics that makes battles/time management easier
P4G and P5R are still worth it over the vanilla counterparts though from the sheer additions
P3P on the otherhand is more a gray area since that isn’t the definitive edition. P3 never got a true definite edition.
@AstraeaV it should have been ported awhile ago yes, but better late then never because I can imagine there are plenty of Switch people that never touched the game on other platforms. Also kind of hard to call those other home consoles “better” when they can’t do easy portable gaming.
Also before someone swoops in as usual with their input; no the Steam Deck has plenty of its own cons for people [where for many they can’t even get the device easy and quick] that a Switch version would still be preferable
I'm aching to play P4 and P3 more. Its been much longer for me there
I already got the Phantom Thieves Edition on PS4, though I might upgrade to the PS5 version for a frame rate that is more consistent with Strikers if it releases on PS Plus.
Can’t wait to play these on the Switch, its been far too long since I played 3 & 4 on the Vita (yes, I do realise they’re not out until a nebulous point in 2023).
I hope that if they sell well Nintendo will get the three Persona Dancing games on to the Switch too.
I'm mostly excited to play on the Series X via Game Pass. But I will definitely get the Switch version for collecting purposes.
@Arawn93
Do you not count Persona 3 FES as the definitive edition because it lacks the content of Persona 3 Portable?
Original on PS3, P5R on PS4 and now P5RPortal on Switch.
But the price puts me off for now.
Played this digitally on PS4 and can't wait to play again on Switch. The only downside is the Switch tax (£54.99 vs £49.99 on Xbox and Playstation).
@Fizza And then in November: Tactics Ogre, Sonic Frontiers, and Pokemon S/V all within 10 days.
Preordered earlier today. Been port begging for this one particular title since 2017, and pretty much only this one, so felt like I had to put my money where my mouth is.
Does seem a bit cheeky of Atlus to pump up the price above the average RRP for a port - and especially when we all know this will get plenty of digital sales down the road, like all Sega/Atlus games, but not sure the physical will ever be cheaper than at launch.
@Aurumonado AND God of War Ragnarok! This year has been absolutely bonkers for games.
@Fizza
Dude October is just stacked and killing my budget. Don’t forget we get Nier and No man’s Sky this week and reviewers already raving about both ports and Sky is v4.0 which was a huge update. Huge SRPG fan so Sparks will be getting all my time once out but wanting all of these on cart so will likely wait until black Friday deals to see if I can save some coin on some of them. Still chewing on Xeno3 but should be done in time for Sparks….great time to be a Switch gamer and it all rolls into next year which is also setup to slay.
Played through P4 on my PS4. I will get this on Gamepass and then pick up a copy for my Switch later to have.
@Krull
I”m holding out for Black Friday sales for some of these 3rd party releases ( plus played P5 already and just so many other ‘new’ releases eating my $$$). I think the sad state of physical at retail (since the NWO pandemic) has limited physical copies made and is making it harder to get deals on carts so you may be right on not seeing some of these much cheaper than release price. I know it will go on digital sale at a big discount at some point but I”m an old skool collector so love me some carts.
@Jhena both FES and P3P lack the benefits of the other version so P3 doesn’t have an actual definitive edition
Ideally we would have FES with the P3P additions, but that is easier said then done because the P3P female route is stuck in that PSP specs visual novel view for most of the game that isn’t in Tartarus so it’s not like they can just give FES controllable party feature from P3P and call it a day.
I mean they can, but then they will just piss off the P3 female protag fans which is kind of counterproductive when Atlus went out of their way to make female protag relevant again in PQ2 already.
They would need to overhaul the female route from the ground up which was probably the deal breaker and they just chose P3P and moved on with their day
I might get it someday. I played P5 on the PS4 several years ago, but (and I'm pretty sure I said this on this very site years ago lol) I said that I might pick up Royal if it comes to the Switch because it'd be nice to have it portable and then experience the new content.
Still, the other Personas are first on the list for me as I've never played them before.
I've already got Royal on the PS5, still entirely intending to pick it up on the Switch. Do kind of wish 3 and 4 were coming out before it instead of after though.
I have both a PS4 and Switch held off on playing the game till this port. This game is so huge it works better being on handheld to pick up and play. Pre ordered the cool collector's edition.
@Arawn93
True both are lacking content of the other. And yet I still consider Persona 3 FES as the definitive edition of Persona 3. But you are not wrong if you do not consider it the definitive edition.
Since I already own Persona 3 FES, buying Persona 3 Portable on the Switch would be the closest I could come to a true definitive edition.
@Koffyman no need to
October is just crazy, lol
Chaos Head Noah / Chaos;Child
