Another week, another chart-topping performance from Splatoon 3.
Yes, the multiplayer sequel has hit number one yet again in the Japanese charts, bringing in another 157,348 copies for Nintendo. It's another drop from the previous week, but still leagues ahead of The Legend of Heroes: Kuro no Kiseki II at number two, which managed a comparatively modest (yet still solid in its own right) 36,261 units.
Elsewhere, FIFA 23 has entered the charts at number four - hardly the runaway success compared to the UK, but still decent, and Taiko no Tatsujin: Rhythm Festival only managed 7,911 copies sold this week, slipping down to number nine in the charts.
Here's the overall top ten from the week of 26th September to 2nd October, 2022:
- [NSW] Splatoon 3 (Nintendo, 09/09/22) – 157,348 (2,900,483)
- [PS4] The Legend of Heroes: Kuro no Kiseki II -CRIMSON SiN- (Falcom, 09/29/22) – 36,261 (New)

- [NSW] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Nintendo, 04/28/17) – 8,126 (4,855,158)
Looking at hardware for the week, the Switch is leading the pack once again, but interestingly enough, the Switch Lite specifically has fallen a few places, sitting behind all PS5 and Xbox SKUs. Still, it's looking rosey for the OLED Model, bringing in close to 50,000 more sales for the week and closing in on a total of 3 million.
- Switch OLED Model – 47,042 (2,725,538)
- Switch – 20,974 (18,740,181)
- PlayStation 5 – 15,101 (1,699,911)
- Xbox Series S – 9,663 (199,755)
- Xbox Series X – 3,401 (163,736)
- PlayStation 5 Digital Edition – 2,975 (273,368)

Remember when Michael Pachter said Nintendo should drop the hybrid Switch in favor of the Lite? Pepperidge Farm remembers.
Valkyrie elysium sales are a big oof sadly.
And it will likely continue to stay that way until the heat death of the universe. Or until Pokemon comes out.
Christmas period is going to be a bloodbath at this rate.
Since the start of the Switch' life, every year it did approx 1.6 million in the last 2 months of the year in Japan only.
Would be amazing if they can do it again in 2022, it's six year.
They need to do something about COMMUNICATION ERRORS yesterday. Yes, I have excellent internet.
@IronMan30 I forget, did he say it before or after some Lite owners started frankensteining their console to TVs just because?
@IronMan30 he has suggested to drop hardware altogether…. Put all IP on other platforms and mobile. After the Switch proved to be a success beyond anyone’s dreams, he said Nintendo’s next console should be a dongle. Good thing they don’t take his advice
Finally Minecraft got knocked out of the top 10 this week thanks to those new Falcom and Square Enix games that's not on Switch and will probably be gone from the chart by the next two weeks.
Almost 1/4 of the Switch’s hardware sales, across the 3 versions, came from Japan. That’s kinda insane these days. And the OLED model sales are huge, too!
@rockodoodle Good thing he doesn't work in the videogame industry either, any gaming company under his umbrella will fall faster than Phil Harrison's handling of Google Stadia or Tommy Tallarico's handling of the Intellivision Amico which means his dongle of a system with a controller is going to failed faster than any hardware ever made that it'll make even garbage hardware from the likes of Amazon, AtGames, Kinhanks, Anbernic, PowKiddy, Retro-Bits, Hyperkin, Yobo, Soulja Boy, and Arcade 1Up look like masterpiece.
Just curious. I heard visual novels are big in japan but I do not see any in the charts. Are they mostly PC only or are the sales just not that big as I thought?
@nhSnork after.
@Jhena A majority of people in Japan who read, watch, and play visual novels does so via mobile phones or digitally through other devices. Not that many choose the videogame route anymore thus why you don't see physical visual novel games selling that well. I believe Japan also had a Netflix-like service there where they could go watch and play their favorite visual novels via their devices so sales of physical visual novels doesn't fly off the shelves that much.
@Serpenterror
Thanks. Now I know why.
I'm shocked Xbox is getting a fairly decent foothold in Japan (well by Xbox standards).
@Specters Probably to play the games on PS5 and Series X but not Switch, and they can't get a PS5 due to stock shortages.
1. Switch OLED Model – 47,042 (2,725,538)
3. PlayStation 5 – 15,101 (1,699,911)
This is more surprising to see.....thought it be closer...
And this is even worse......
4. Xbox Series S – 9,663 (199,755)
5. Xbox Series X – 3,401 (163,736)
I doubt this is supply issue...
@Specters I’m sure I saw something in the Twitterverse saying there’s a massive discrepancy between Media Create’s Xbox numbers and Famitsu’s. Media Create estimates about half the numbers of Famitsu.
@SwitchForce prices on the PS5 models went up in Japan last month. Sony raised them all over the world… except the US.
@Serpenterror He does work in the video game industry, though – just on the B2B side, not B2C.
@WiltonRoots
Total Xbox Series sales as of Sep 2022:
> Media Create: 177,967
> Famitsu: 363,491
This is the biggest sales discrepancies I've ever seen between Media Create vs Famitsu. Maybe Phil accidentally sent a GamePass check to the Famitsu employees 😆.
@rockodoodle
They need to go to cloud gaming, it is the only way things can go well for Nintendo.
@SwitchForce
It is the Japanese charts. Xbox has never been strong in Japan. It’s practically a guarantee switch will destroy the competition there.
Man I remember when new Falcom games can get 100k+ on launch with a single portable platform.
@westman98 Yeah something doesn't smell right there!
wow haven't seen so many sony games in the charts for years
@Arawn93 Falcom is drowning its audience in Trails. Each game in that series requires a lot of investment to get into, and releasing so many of them back-to-back is bound to cause some burnout.
@blindsquarel
I hope that is sarc as Nintendo should never go cloud. Cloud sucks and is total trash for portable or hybrid gaming. I have a XSX with Game pass. Fast 600Mbit internet and GB LAN. Cloud is still only sufficient for only some forms of games. Your never gonna get arcade games like a Mario or MK8 or Smash to play the same in the cloud. So sure Fire Emblem or even Pokemon might play well enough with a persistent cloud connection but for portable its bunk and no current cloud model can even do 60fps. M$ has the best cloud offering currently in gaming and all I like it for is to check stuff out before committing to a 25-100GB download.
@QuickSilver88
Yeah it’s sarcasm.
@blindsquarel
I figured but had to use any opportunity to rail against cloud gaming….LoL.
@QuickSilver88
It’s all good, I am the same way with most things
