Update [Tue 11th Oct, 2022 17:05 BST]: It's been announced that in addition to the standard physical release for Cuphead, a Collector's Edition is also on the way, and it contains some pretty awesome goodies!
The standard physical edition will launch on December 6th, however the Collector's Edition will be available "at a later date" (a release window of "Q1 2023" is currently displayed on the product page) for $199.99 and can be ordered directly through iam8bit.com.
The contents of the Collector's Edition are as follows:
"A vintage handcrafted Cuphead marionette puppet, a mechanical hand-crank music box, a unique and classy o-sleeve, and a map showcasing the world of Inkwell Isles from Cuphead – all within a premium box showcasing the Asbestos Safety Curtain that can be transformed to display the Cuphead marionette."
What do you think of this one? Will you be picking one up?

It's Cuphead's birthday - hooray! Although the hard-as-nails platformer only launched on the Nintendo Switch back in 2019, it initially released on Windows and Xbox One back on September 29th, 2017, making Cuphead five years old as of today. Mad!
To celebrate the milestone, developer and publisher Studio MDHR has announced that the game will be getting a physical release on Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One and will be available in "retail stores everywhere".
As a bonus, the physical release will also come packaged with the recently released DLC expansion Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course, which is nice! We thought the expansion was a resounding success, awarding it a 9/10 in our review and calling it "a great little expansion that adds new life to one of the Switch's most entertaining games".
As for the main game itself, check out our video review below:
Will you be grabbing a physical copy of Cuphead? It's about time, right? Tell us in the comments below!

Great, I'm glad this is finally on its way!
The physical release is unlikely to be exclusive to iam8bit's web store, it's listed on GAME's UK website so will probably get an international retail release like they did with the two Ori games, and Spiritfarer.

Edit: It looks like GAME UK has removed the listing from their site now?
I was waiting for the physical release since it was announced. Would love Cuphead and Mugman amiibo to sweeten the deal. One can dream…
A must-have for any Switch physical collector.
@RupeeClock Hopefully all releases are complete on the cart...
@Magician I only collect physicals I want to play, and I don't want to play this, so not a must-have for me. But glad for others if they like this game
This is what I've been waiting for before picking this game up.
Thank God it's not Limited Run...Waited patiently for this for quite a while now. Looking forward to getting it!
That's all I've been waiting for, for the last few years, to finally play it. And indeed, thank God it's not Limited Run handling this.
too late, already got the pc version and the switch digital and am not triple dipping
That's nice, never would had thought that it took 5 years until it got a physical release but hey this is the world we live in now where physical and digital don't simultaneously release anymore. Hopefully the actual release date won't be too far off.
@MarioBrickLayer
This late into development, I think this is probably a fully data complete physical release.
They've already done a post-DLC update to fix smaller issues.
I hope it has some form of beautiful manual or artbook inside the box, and the definitive version of the entire game on the cartridge, as this game's art definitely needs that printed material to look at and that timeless physical release. If it does, I'll buy it at a decent price.
Lord, how I've waited! I'll finally get to play this game. I'll preorder the first chance I get.
I can't wait to try it with my kiddos, as they've been quite exasperated with me for holding out this long, insisting I will only play once I can own it physically.
The one saving grace is that it will be complete with the DLC on the cart. It was annoying to buy Streets of Rage 4 on cart, then having to sell it back and re-buy a "definitive edition" after the DLC came out later.
I remember reading somewhere that the developers wanted to give the Switch version a physical release after the DLC dropped, so it's good to see them make good on their promise like this. I haven't played Cuphead yet, but I'm very excited to know that I can own everything on one cartridge!
Nice of them to finally say something more about this, but still no release date? Come on!
Been waiting years for a physical release! It's finally almost here! I'll pick up copies for PS4 & Switch. I haven't played the DLC yet, so I'm excited for that.
Wow, I held off the digital release for 5 years.
Absolute class act waiting this long to launch physically just so they could include the DLC. I may double dip just to support the release but then again I may not haha. Regardless I think it's a really cool and good thing.
I’d be interested if I wasn’t sure it’d kick my a**.
I have been waiting for a physical version since it was only on xbox.
It's time to double-dip on Cuphead(or double double-dip since I own the digital game and DLC. Would that be quadruple dip?). Even though I own the digital version and the DLC, this is going in my shelf collection.
Thank f-k this isn't imprisoned behind Limited Run and their BS. 😄
FINALLY!!! I've put off Cuphead for the physical edition, and I'm so glad it's with a decent publisher. iam8bit is solid.
I got this when it launched on Xbox but have held off on the dlc for this release. I will gladly buy this for the switch. It’s one of a kind.
@RupeeClock yeah I was only thinking I hope it's not another situation like the Ori double pack where one release is complete on cart (in this case the iam8bit one) whilst others are not.
@ElRoberico I did the same!!
Oh my God,. Literally feels like a weight off my shoulders. I'll finally get to play this game!
I've wanted to get this game for a while, this finally might be incentive enough
I was just talking about the physical copy yesterday and here we are
Finallyyyyy! I was waiting so long as I am only on physical games but the patience was worthing! Thankfully No limited Run!!
I bought it digitally on Steam and Switch because it's one of my favorite games but I don't think I need it physical. Sure does look nice though.
So glad Limited Run is not handling this release! I am still waiting on two games from them that I ordered over five months ago. -_-
Had a feeling this was coming, but I finally give in a few months ago when the game was on sale. Still, great game and worth getting if anyone has been more patient than I was.
This is one of the few cases where I got a digital copy of a game, I'll happily double dip to get a physical copy of Cuphead on the Switch (I'll use the added DLC to justify it).
It's about time! I've been waiting for a physical release for way too long. Glad I never gave in and bought it digitally.
TEKSETTER-SAN ARCADE-FRIEND [Bounding toward you enthusiastically]
I can't wait to try it with my kiddos, as they've been quite exasperated with me for holding out this long, insisting I will only play once I can own it physically.
@Teksetter In solidarity with you, and respect for your young ones, I promise I will only crack open my own (physical) copy once you've posted and let us know that you've begun playing yours (maybe in one of those "wutcha playin' this weekend?" threads). I for one can appreciate your decision/determination (although I understand about the "kiddos" - it's been a significant fraction of their lives, hahaha).
I sincerely hope all is well with you!
My wallet aches, another one for the collection. I've probably bought 1.5 games a month in 2022 (that's an all time high for me). I knew this year would be busy but the train just keeps going!
In a weird sense, I'm kinda glad Zelda TOTK was delayed to May 2023. It game me plenty of time to enjoy Xenoblade 3 and play other great games this year.
@CANOEberry
CB-dono!! It’s so nice to see you back!! Thank you thank you for the kind message. First Cuphead physical is announced, and now my favorite roving furball correspondent is back from paddling the great northern waterways! We’ll call today a win overall. 😁
I most certainly will post about Cuphead on the first Whatcha Playing This Weekend? possible, but please don’t feel obligated to wait for that! Dive right in, I say! We’ve waited long enough already.
I think my kids were in early grade school and kindergarten when our sad Cuphead wait began. Now the younger is in 4th grade and her sister in middle school! So enough’s enough!
I’m hoping you’ve been well and had many fun adventures this summer. Maybe you even made it to the world’s largest arcade??
Finally. I just hope we don’t have to wait five years for a physical release of Return to Monkey Island.
I am legit tempted to buy some of these releases, despite having the Switch one + DLC downloaded. What’s the price, I guess?
@Teksetter 😃 I've missed your words of late. I must be brief now, but I'm putting together a "summer vacation" post (with photos) to reply more.
@CANOEberry
Apologies for the slow reply! I guess news of Cuphead physical has me all in a tizzy.
Please drop me a line when you post your summer vacation report! It will be nice to read and reminisce about having a social life. 😅
I hope you had a fun Bayonetta weekend! As acclaimed as those games are, I bought the 1+2 pack on Wii U and then never played it! Maybe I’ll buy 3 someday, as I’m sure it will be another outrageous hit. My wallet is crying for mercy lately, though.
That said, I’d certainly welcome your company awaiting Cuphead cartridge edition! It’s probably safe to say I will play it on release day, so I shan’t keep you waiting long. 😉
Cuphead is indeed coming to retail stores, as you can find on their microsite.
https://cuphead.iam8bit.com/
It's slated for an early December release, and already has listings on GAME and Amazon UK.
Fantastic, glad they don't fall prey to a limited release. Studio HDMR y'all are awesome.
there’s their greedy cuphead collectors edition, i just want a physical copy of the game but ya know im starting to feel rubbed the wrong way by that company, they made us wait all this time to get a physical copy and im kinda starting to feel like maybe i don’t want to buy it now
where's those uk listings!? (
Finally, been waiting to play this game ever since the physical release were announced.
Only $200 eh? Yeah yeah, sure ok
I’ll be fine with the standard edition. As negligent as GameStop has been with my preorders lately, I just may order direct from Iam8bit. 😅
Oh yeah! They will have one more sale from here
Doesn't seem to be available in Canada (the birthplace of Cuphead, no less) and American sites refuse to ship here. Does anyone know if there is a way to get it here?
If that includes the DLC on the cart, I'm so down.
@Koffyman So just...don't get the Collectors Edition and walk into a store and buy the regular one that will be getting a full retail release?
Also getting upset about how long it took for the physical to be released is silly given that they had the best possible reason for it.
I'll definitely be picking this up in December.
I'll take the puppet
Praise jebus, finally!
@RupeeClock Have you got a link to the physical version on Amazon? I can only find it on GAME.
That’s a bit steep for a collector’s edition. Cut out some of the bells and whistles and I’d buy it.
Great game. Plays great on Switch with no cons!
On another note: never buy collector's editions. Spend the spare money on games instead of crap that'll only collect dust.
Crazy that there's so many that held off for 5 years just for this announcement lol. Well good for those who have been waiting then, it's just not my type of thing though.
Hopefully the asbestos curtain isn't actually asbestos.
@BASEDSAKRI i bet myself I’d find a comment like this within the first ten and you JUST came in for a photo finish
I've wanted a physical release for a long time! This is perfect
Finally physical release plus the puppet.
@PaperCanadian You might have to wait for a reseller to stock it on Amazon.ca. That is what I had to do to my hands on Ori.
@gcunit 6th December
@ViewtifulCool TGC have it listed https://www.thegamecollection.net/cuphead-switch?sqr=Cuphead
Thought I was definitely going to get this, but then saw the price, crikey.
Would maybe consider at half that price. Maybe.
@Uncle_Franklin the standard or collector’s price?
@Magrane
Collector's.
