Update #2 [Wed 16th Nov, 2022 05:15 GMT]: Level-5 has delayed the game's release by a week. Instead of launching on December 1st in Japan, it'll now arrive on December 8th. It's all timed in with the release of the anime's second season (via Gematsu).
Update [Sun 18th Sep, 2022 02:45 BST]: Level-5 has now confirmed Megaton Mushashi X will launch exclusively in Japan on 1st December. Below is a trailer and gameplay footage (via Gematsu):
Original article [Sat 2nd Jul, 2022 02:35 BST]: Level-5 - known for series like Professor Layton, Inazuma Eleven and Yo-kai Watch - has announced its mech RPG game Megaton Musashi will be going free-to-play in Japan this Fall.
Megaton Musashi X will include the six major content updates Megaton Musashi received since its launch on Switch in 2021, and will also feature new content. This includes Season 2 of story, PVP online battles, new mecha, characters, weapons and stages (thanks, Gematsu).
Save data from the original game will carry over to Megaton Musashi X, and players who do this will be able to purchase a special item set featuring exclusive mecha. Getter Robo and Mazinger Z will also join the free-to-play release of Megaton Musashi when it arrives later this year.
There's no word on this new version of the game being localised, but if anything changes we'll let you know. Megaton Musashi also goes beyond the game and is accompanied by anime, manga and various other merchandise in Japan.
Would you be interested in playing a F2P game like this? Played any other Level-5 games recently? Tell us down below.

Probably yeah. Though I feel bad for those that paid for it.
Uhh yay for Japan I guess?
I was excited for a sec because I thought it said Megatron as in Megatron from Transformers.
It’s sad how Level-5 decided to leave foreign markets. Basically leaving it to other companies to publish and localize their games after having some pretty great games. They pushed Yokai Watch so hard that they must have put all their eggs in one basket and when that failed to reach Pokémon levels they backed off and went Japan only. Maybe Nintendo should buy them to pick up some gems of IPs like Dark Cloud or Layton.
(Checking from play-asia)
I didn't know if Megaton Musashi have PS4 version. 😳
(Checking the gameplay and FPS check from YouTube)
Switch version = 60 fps during peoples mode, 30 fps during battle
PS4 version = All smooth 60 fps.
Hmm, I will stick with the original game.
Players who payed for it previously will be given the unique chance to pay for an exclusive pack? C'mon Level-5, couldn't you just give it away for loyal players who already invested money in the game?
@Anti-Matter actually PS4 will be running at 45 fps while Switch will be at 60 fps while in dock mode
I bought last year and played for maybe a couple hours before other games pulled me away.
I’m tempted by Getter and Mazinger but not enough to invest in premium DLC for a FTP incarnation of the game. MM isn’t a bad game - I’m sure mecha fans will appreciate it - but I have to absolutely love a game to double-dip on it. The single player content will be fine for me when I feel like returning to it.
Where I'm personally concerned, anything F2P can STAY in Japan. The same goes for mobile games regardless of IP.
That's cool. Sucks for anyone that bought it lol. Anyone know if there are English subs?
Still bummed about Level 5’s business decisions in recent years. They were really killing it on the DS and 3DS.
I only partially followed this game because of the inclusion of Mecha but I never realised it could transition to a FTP model. This however kills any interest I had it in, especially as there’s gonna be new story content once the transition takes place.
@Travisemo007 from what I understand no. That's why I haven't bothered
I’ve been waiting for them to bring it west, but if it’s going to be free-to-play, I can stop waiting.
I don’t do ftp on principle.
Recently announced Phantasy Star Online 2 coming to PS4 (finally)…. only it’s free to play now. fml
Could really go for a Phantasy Star V instead.
@Travisemo007 There are not. Japanese language only. Haven’t heard if there is an Asia version (which would have english) though.
Umm I’ll take a new Virtual On, Custom Robo and/or Xenogears game on Switch for $100, Alex **Jeopardy voice**
… Wun can only hope.
My favourite pop trend that is big in Japan that needs to come to the West (as evident in a lot of the games in this video) is the INSANE naming conventions for games, movies and anime that have really picked up in the last 5 years.
"Halo: Infinite"? Weak sauce! If MS was from Japan, we would have got "Death Ring Warrior Returns, artificial lovers personally war: The women in my head. Is artificial life real and what are the moral implications of erasing that "data?".
It's like how in the 90s every cartoon theme song in the West was just someone singing the plot of the series and introducing the characters, they are moving just giving you a full description of the game as the title.
@wuntyme8
A Xenogears remake is Tetsuya Takahashi passion project, he takes about wanting to make one basically anytime he talks to the Media, which is even more noteworthy given is generally anti-remake mindset.
Unfortunately there is sort of legal minefield around it that I don't fully understand. It's not as simple as "Square owns it", which I'm sure Nintendo could solve with buckets of money. There are complications for both the deal Takahashi made when he left to found Monolith and how rights transferred in the merger with Enix.
All in all I THINK it's a net possible, with this being something that there is at least a ton of desire to see happen, just a lot of red tape to deal with.
@PortuGuy They could have easily released Yo-kai Watch 1 for Switch in the Western market.
All translation was already done with the 3DS version, so would have been easy money for them.
Really stupid, as I am certainly not the only one who would have bought it day 1 on the Switch. Its a great and fun game.
@PortuGuy
None of that is close to true especially since Yo-Kai Watch 2 outsold Pokemon ORAS in Japan, which explains alot why newer Pokemon games have mostly adopated poorly implemented Yo-Kai Watch features since Sun and Moon. What ACTUALLY happened is that their localization office had horrible management and employees were overworked and treated unfairly. Not to mention all their other stuff was making bank at the time such as Ni No Kuni 2 among other things and especially their YKW mobile games which never dwindled below the top 50 grossing mobile games in all Japan ever since its release.
I really wish people would do more research on this topic.
This game is awesome and I managed to play it for a bit before getting stuck. It is a criminal offence against Westerners that this isn't in westerners language.
sucks that it's exclusive to Japan but at least we can still play it cause Switch is region free
@Anti-Matter Must pick up the PS4 version then. Can I play it on the bus to work?
@DiamondJim
You can play it at home.
Do you remember times, when Level 5 made an interesting games?
Level 5 can’t make a proper F2P game, so this is disappointing
I hate each time we get news on this game due to the final statement always saying along the lines of, "A Japan exclusive." WE LOVE GIANT ROBOTS TOO!!!!
@SteamEngenius you can download it btw
@MysteryCupofJoe its free, so just make a guest account on your switch with japan as the location, ez
Every time I see news about this game my heart sinks just a little bit further.
That metal dogs game looks interesting lol.
@Wilforce Agreed... you said exactly what I was thinking.
@Greatluigi Players that own the original 2021-released game will be able to get a set of exclusive mecha, normally priced at around 5000円 , for only 100円.
@Rob_S uhh how do you translate that to dollars?
@Greatluigi 5000円 is around $35.00.
100円 is around .70¢.
@Rob_S WHOA that’s cheap!!
This game doesn’t matter to me anyways because I get tons of content that I make for myself. There is one robot game that I am stalling for and it’s the Transformers game that OG is making from EarthSpark. The only show I am going to watch is Transformers Earthspark. Soon I will be renewing my sub for Paramount+ and watch Transformers Earthspark. I am behind schedule and need to catch up.
How many Bumblebee you think I designed to buy them?
I am currently preordered my copy of Alice Gear Aegis CS from GameStop for my Nintendo Switch. Lots of anime girls and lots arena battles!
Mechs are cool and all but why is this news on a site clearly made for the western market?
@Omedru I don't get it either. It's like they love to remind us of nice things we can't ever have.
@Travisemo007 There are not
I mean I'd happily pay if you give us English subs.
If Level-5 wants to make money in the west, all they need to do is re-release Dark Cloud 1/2, Rogue Galaxy, or Dragon Quest VIII.
@Omedru People DO import games and there are Japanese speakers in the West.
@YANDMAN wdym? I only said a game looks interesting lol. R u telling me it's not worth playing lol??
@Travisemo007 Didn't you ask if it had English subs? To which I said it does not.
I would love a Mech Warrior type mech game that was more simulation then button mash.
