At this year's Realms Deep showcase, Slipgate Ironworks and 3D Realms announced Phantom Fury, a follow-up to Ion Fury.
The new game sees the return of Shelly 'Bombshell' Harrison but is now set in a full 3D world. It's described as a "road movie-inspired" first-person shooter and will require players to use Shelly's bionic arm to unleash powerful abilities, solve puzzles and explore environments.
Of course, there'll also be lots of powerful weapons like armor-piercing shotguns and existing guns such as the Loverboy revolver. You'll use every weapon at your disposal to blast away soldiers, mutants and cyborgs, as you go on a journey to nab an artifact capable of unprecedented destruction.
Here's a full rundown from the PR:
Years after Shelly’s fight against Jadus Heskel, an old colleague rouses her from a coma. She awakens with a bionic arm capable of incredible feats and a new mission: track down the dangerous Demon Core, an artifact capable of unprecedented destruction before villains get their hands on it.
Set off on an adrenaline-amped adventure across the USA to battle menacing soldiers, vicious cyborgs, vile mutants, and challenging bosses. Blast through enemies in satisfying skirmishes in seedy Albuquerque hotels, explore abandoned facilities in Los Alamos, defend the streets of Chicago, and delve into more sinister locations on her journey.
Phantom Fury’s world features an incredible amount of interactivity. Pilot helicopters, solve environmental puzzles, hack into fully usable computers, play arcade machines and air hockey, and much more — if you see it, you can probably play with it. Each mission comes with surprising ways to interact and creatively circumvent obstacles.
Shelly’s predisposition for powerful weapons requires an awesome arsenal, and Slipgate Ironworks delivers. Wield more than 20 weapons, from her trusty Loverboy revolver and Bowling Bombs to new equipment like armor-piercing shotguns, electrified foam shooting devices, and controllable drones. Upgrade armaments with mods like new fire functions to unleash hell. Unlock new abilities for Shelly’s nifty new arm like punch attacks and electric shields to overcome challenges on the way to the Demon Core.
This game will be released across all platforms, including the Nintendo Switch at some point in 2023. What do you think of the above trailer? Comment down below.

Will not support these utterly disgusting devs in any way. To donate money to a charity to apologise for your Discord chat being filled with hate speech and to then backpedal when chuds started whining about ‘censorship’… sad that they were supported enough to warrant a sequel.
Lets hope the PC Police don't create any unnecessary drama or outrage over it...

This looks way better than the first one
Looking good, hopefully the Switch version maintain that core gameplay.
The original's eduke32 graphics were a cool throwback, but I like this pixelated Quake aesthetic a LOT more.
Looks pretty badass. I've had the first game backlogged for a good long while, so it might be time to actually dedicate time to it.
Man don't you just love it when people whine about something and argue like middle schoolers, then bring it to the point of family members not being a part of their life which is really hypocritical because you guys are whining about transphobia but then call people who didn't have a parent in their life an incel? Blah blah blah whatever, someone named HotGoomba shouldn't have to complain about this.
This is a gaming website, not Twitter, both sides take your bickering elsewhere. I just want to look at talk aboit games, not have to scroll through a whole warzone.
TL;DR: I love you all but zip it.
anyways this game looks alright.
gamers LOVE freaking out and being normal when they get the chance to defend hate speech. they seem to love this more than actually playing games, even,
I love Ion Fury on Switch. I'll definitely pick this up day 1
So happy to see this renaissance of FPS games which evoke the style of shooter from the old days when FPS shooters were actually fun. Looking forward to this!
It's 3D now like quake? Cool, definitely getting this. And is that the protagonis and weapon from Sin (1998) game? 😃
@Phostachio @DashKappei @nessisonett Rather than (pretending) to be perpetually offended, just enjoy the game you like and ignore the game (or devs) that you didn't like, you'll live healthier that way.
Epic trailer! Seems very very good! I will support them!
@vicviper001 it's a deliberate nod to Duke Nukem Forever 2001, b/c Shelly originated as a character for it that got dumped during the transition of the IP to Gearbox, it's why when it turned out 3D Realms are legally prohibited from making new Duke Nukem games, they took the design from DNF and... Did things to it.
Bombshell the game itself is now largely forgotten, but Bombshell the character lives on - first in Ion Fury and now here.
Also, the crossover with SiN is an unexpected but fun surprise.
@Noelemahc is it really a nod to duke nukem forever 2001? That's very cool and I can see why now you mention it. No idea what the drama above is about though....
Rise of the Triad, Prodeus and now this all in a day! Truly music to an FPS lovers ears like mine!
@DTfeartheBEARD Hell yes.. I got a physical copy of the first game and absolutely love it. Reminds me of the first time I played Duke Nukem 3D on PC back in 1996. Did you also see the news about Rise of the Triad coming next year and Prodeus coming next week?
Ion Fury is atrocious on the Switch. FPS drops down in the 10s and a "stable" framerate on 20-25. Anyone who has played it on another console know how trash the Switch port is. I really hope the new engine does a better job or it's a hard pass from me.
Yes, very strong Duke Nukem forever vibes. Have a look at the DNF E3 2001 trailer. Even this trailer has similar pacing and quotes.
Will be leaving the background noise at the door and enjoying this 00's tribute thankyouverymuch.

Amazing, next to Tunic my most wanted game.. oeps forgot Zelda..
They going the Half life/goldeneye/perfect dark route.
I’m in like Flynn.
To those with issues regarding the devs, have you yourself ever been a d*** in your life and then changed and grown up? Or are you from that point-on a forever d***? Is it possible these guys could be different by now, or down the line too?
They are not permanently bad people for goodness sake. By all means acknowledge their mistake as you perceive them - then move on. I don't understand how being an idiot at one point in life invalidates any successfully executed creativity by that person (i.e. the games).
I have no intention of 'canceling' anyone when they can be better people in the next moment. And us 'not supporting them' doesn't help the situation, nor does it further anyone's personal campaign to sort the world out either - it probably just makes them hold tighter to the views you hate, due to the hostility they receive.
If this is a good game then I'll support that. And if I can help those same people work through some questionable viewpoints I also will, but it's a separate issue.
This article is about a game - and a damn good looking one at that.
@JustMonika Exactly! It does give me Duke Nukem vibes. I love that it has gyro aiming and if you put in the Konami code it upgrades the framerate from 30 to 60fps. I haven't looked at those games yet. With so much gaming news and announcements this week, I'm still playing catch up. Samurai Maiden definitely caught my attention though. Have you seen the trailer for that?
Looks fab.
For those not in the know about the apparently 'disgusting' behavior of the devs they made some jokes about two of the most protected and privileged groups in the west right now. That's it. Jokes and punching up ones too.
They made a bad mistake in apologising to the hateful mob and rightly backtracked.
I’m loving these old school style shooters that have been coming out recently. I got some serious Red Faction vibes (the fps games) from this trailer 👍🏻
I support them instantly, they are doing great fun Games.
The Debate about them being homophobic is very very hypocritical.
@reidar_vincenzo
I'm play9mg it at the moment and have literally never seen it drop to 10 frames, even once.
@DTfeartheBEARD Yeah, I was playing Rise of the Triad on PC in 1996 also, lol. Prodeus just looks absolutely amazing. Doom Eternal type stuff but more violent, lol
@JustMonika I never heard of Rise of the Triad, so I have no nostalgia for it. I've also never been a PC gamer, but the trailer looks good. Prodeus looks gorgeous, definitely gives me Doom vibes. I see it's coming to Game Pass. I'll play it on my Series X day 1!
@completo88
yeah, what are you gonna do about it?
It reminds me of The Conduit, for some reason. The graphics aren't great, but who cares?
And why are comments encouraging politically motivated boycotts of video game companies allowed on this site? Just wondering.
Looks great. For some reason my brain prefers simple looking video gamey looking games.
Also good to support people that aren't infected by woke.

Again, no dissenting viewpoints. I wonder why? On topic: this game looks great, especially visually.
@completo88 Thank you for the adult response. I have no idea what the issue is about, as I'm usually too busy living life with my family than reading about the latest controversy online.
NLife has been refreshing for me as it can be a place I can just read about games and enjoy the hobby.
It was nice to hear another calm adult in the room.

@coolwhip Those that yell the loudest might also be hiding some of their own skeletons in a closet...
@russell-marlow resetera, yikes. That website should be raided by the FBI.
Never played Ion Fury, but it certainly got my attention.
A Switch physical copy of Ion Fury popped up in my area once, but I totally let it pass. If I ever come across it again, I'll get it for sure.
I wanna play that before the follow-up.

@Richnj Really? >_>

@nessisonett Sorry to see so many people attacking your viewpoint because it's different to theirs. The hypocrisy on show is staggering.
On topic, the game looks decent but the market seems to be flooded with these types of shooters at the minute.
I both understand and do not understand why the devs chose to not use the Build Engine in this one.
Pro for not using the Build Engine is that it looks more modern.
Con for not using the Build Engine is that it just looks like a PS2 era game, whereas Build Engine games (all in imo of course) just has a certain old school charm to them, while PS2 games has aged like rotten wine graphically imo.
(game play is another discussion and game play could save this title - Ion Fury played really well - except for the bosses I admit).

@DashKappei Isn't this comment disrespecting others? Why is it not removed?
what this comment section has taught me is that nobody on this site knows how to spell "dissenting"
@5th313ment Maybe flooded was a tad hyperbolic. Off the top of my head I can think of the Doom games (all 5 of them), the Quake games, Ion Fury, Dusk, Project Warlock, Immortal Redneck, Prodeus out soon. Others I've probably missed.
Not saying that's a bad thing though. If these are your types of games then you are eating well on Switch.
Ion Fury is a good Duke Nukem 3D like. This looks solid and will probably be better than DNF. Definitely looking forward to this.
@completo88 Can't speak for Polygon, but Kotaku is the same smooth-brains commenting the same stuff over and over in their echo chamber. That's the last thing I would want to see on NL. Sometimes, it's actually a good idea to shut down a conversation, especially when it's not the main focus of the site. And lol at "warning the moderators," that's a good one.
@nessisonett Here, here!!
NINJA APPROVED
@wiiware Totally Colonel Blade from SiN and his default pistol. Really weird, as I have no idea who actually owns that IP - I would have guessed Activision, maybe? I was bummed when SiN: Episodes was canceled. Actually really enjoyed the first one.
@Automated_Unit_4937
Ion Fury/Maiden was essentially the Build Engine pushed to its limits. Or are you referring to Bombshell, which is chronologically after this game?
DEFINITELY gonna wish list this, but sorry, not for Switch. This is one of those games where an authentic experience is had with a keyboard and mouse.
And it's cool they have General Graves from DNF here.
In a way, the graphics engine kinda looks like what DNF was supposed to be, much like Ion Fury had the Build Engine (Duke Nukem 3D's engine) pushed to its limits. Here's hoping for destructible environments and location-specific damage.
@BeautyandtheBeer Apologizing in those situations is never interpreted as anything more than as an admission of guilt, and instead of it being the point where the noise is dropped, it's free license to tear into the accused and give them their "just punishment."
@BeautyandtheBeer Yeah good call not to support the hateful mob, but rather the slightly disgruntled group of… oh dang it bangs toe… umm.. let’s rephrase that. Slight perturbed collection of… uhhh… falls down flight of stairs. Annoyed justice seeking warriors…? Ohh no not that uhh… gets hit by oncoming truck.
@-wc- You're clearly misunderstanding the point of my answer. I'm obviously not going to do anything other than to find another community that actually focuses on video games and not political biases.
That was my whole point if they foster these very specific ideas and cultish hives that is what you will get in the end, and let's be honest here they can claim its due to some moral issue but i've already seen this user "nessionett" actively bully and cursing out others several times in the past whom he didn't agree with, calling them all sorts of ism, ist or phobe without hesitation.
And that's the problem with politics it creates cognitive dissonance where people think it's ok to dehumanize people who you don't agree with.
And the more they let politics sip into their site the more it will slowly but surely resemble a political outlet while turning off people who are there for the original topic, thus we eventually end up getting fantastic Kotaku articles like their PS5 launch article where the journalist instead ended up ranting about the economy and about Biden's presidency.
It's a recipe for disaster.
Ion Fury was one of the best FPS games of recent times and this looks to be at least as good if not better, overall I'd have to say the Realms Deep showcase is the best I've seen this year, so many great games on the way
@RudeAnimat0r I don't like episodic games, with the exception of telltale the walking dead, I prefer buying full 10-12 hours games. I also enjoyed Sin, I hope 3D realms can get the ip and make a new "boomer shooter" Sin 2 with this graphics engine 😃
