Nintendo has been slowly but surely fleshing out its Switch Online + Expansion Pack service with new DLC content for games like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and also by bolstering its retro libraries with plenty of classic titles.
Knowing this could be a tad overwhelming for some players at this point, it's now uploaded a guide on how exactly to redeem and download paid DLC when your Switch Online membership is active. Apart from the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - Booster Course Pass, you can see it's also highlighted Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Splatoon 2's Octo Expansion as well as the N64 app.
The Switch Online service has been chugging along at a steady pace over the past few months. Nintendo has added more 'Missions' and 'Rewards, it's updated the service's mobile app, and in July it added two SNES titles, one NES game, and four Sega Genesis / Mega Drive games to the existing retro libraries. Pokémon Puzzle League joined the N64 service, too.

- Four Sega Genesis / Mega Drive Games Have Been Added To Switch Online's Expansion Pack (July 2022)

Keep in mind you'll need an NSO membership as well as the premium 'Expansion Pack' membership to access all of this content.

1080 Snowboarding please! Especially now that I've finally scored a N64 controller. Really makes a difference in the experience for me

Overwhelming?
More like underwhelming 😜
I followed the guide and I ended up on the PlayStation store. Why does Nintendo have to make it so hard to buy dlc! 😡
I don't have expansion pass, but I've always found it ridiculously easy to get DLC from the eshop- for some reason that is the only part of the eshop where you can buy multiple things at once. The only feature I would like added is a place you could see all the DLC at once for every game you own.
As for what I want from expansion pack? The free DLC is nice in theory but I personally hate the idea of rented DLC for a game I paid for. Pretty much I want GameCube and Game Boy Advance games on expansion. Either that or actual new games, not just trials and DLC; like if they said 'here are 30 indies and/or aging Switch games, pick a free one every X months and keep it while you have expansion pass'.
When my subscription runs out I do not plan to extend it and I do not want to pay for any subscription anymore. Also I will pretty much only get physical stuff from now on.
To be honest I only used it because I was lazy. Not having to unpack the consoles and being able to use savestates felt nice. And the controller is as good as new.
They forgot to mention that you have to do it again, after new content (new mk8d wave for example) releases.
I wonder when we will hear about the next N64 game for Switch online.
As I have mentioned, the 25th of this month is the 25th anniversary of Goldeneye so I feel we will know for sure if the game will be released or not when that date comes.
If it isn’t that I would love a classic wrestling game - even if they have to remove licensed characters.
There should be Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Sega Game Gear, Sega Master System and TurboGrafx-16 support added to the standard pass. And Sega 32X, Sega CD, Turbo CD and Game Boy Advance support for the expansion pass.
There would be a guaranteed one game every week, excluding the special versions
So do you get all of the Mario Kart DLC with expansion pass or just the first wave?
@GVIL,
You get all the waves as they release, as long as your subscription is active.
@johnvboy
Sweet as👍🏿
Tried to download DLC before they uploaded the video, ended up on Game Pass & my Switch almost exploded. With the video’s help, I was finally able to download and play all 17 available games out of the hundreds in the N64’s library! I can’t wait until they start arbitrarily inflating the game count with stupid pointless SP editions of games! Thanks, Nintendo!
I would rather like that they explain what are they (not) doing with Donkey Kong.
Not that I would be interested in this anyways. I treat DLC the same as buying a game; if I can own it, I'd rather choose that over subscription.
However, it's nice of them to actually explain this process. I can imagine there are some out there who ran into the regular price tag, thinking they could just download it from there for free with NSO.
The drip feed is strong in this one.
Had the Expansion Pack until now, but I sure won't renew it unless they AT LEAST drop some new systems on there and announce an actual roadmap for new (old) releases. These are 30 year old ROM files for heaven's sake! I love N64 games dearly, but Nintendo sure loves pushing people to piracy with this.
Lol desperate much? I say while having the expansion pack since day 1
I loved reading the comments on the video. Everyone was pretending that they didn’t know the eshop existed before Nintendo released this video, let alone how to dowload dlc😂
On Steam, the DLC is installed automatically. I don't need to do anything. Who knew that Steam would be so much simpler than Nintendo!
Yeah, once my expansion pass expires, I won’t be renewing it. Just let me outright buy Wave Race and 1080… and add widescreen. Please
@Freek
You are one of those fun people that no matter what Nintendo did you wouldn't be please. But to have a library of NES, SNES, N64, and Genesis, plus Tetris 99, Splatoon 2 DLC, Mario Kart 8 DLC, Animal Crossing DLC, is underwhelming according to you.
Cancelled my auto renewal as switch online doesn’t offer much for the money . I’ll concentrate on gamepass and ps plus now .
There needs to be an option to purchase games like we could with the Virtual Console instead of having to pay $50 a year.
When people say that the dlc’s are great additions to switch online, just remember you need to pay fifty dollars per year to play them. And when the switch loses support for Nintendo you will lose the dlc forever. It would be cheaper in the long run to just buy the dlc separately. Plus you won’t lose it when the switch runs it’s course or when you stop paying for switch online.
@steventonysmith
It was a joke, hence the winking emoji.
😜😜😜😜😜😜😜😜😜
@Vonsparrow @Bass_X0 Agreed, for that price, they need to really bump up the offerings. TG-16, Game Cube, and maybe Saturn support would make it a must have (even though initial offerings would be slim) making the Switch the perfect indie/retro console. Over time, the growth of the library would make it easy to justify a continued subscription. They need to show a little more hustle before players turn their wallets to other consoles like the Steam Deck.
Button mapping for N64 games, specifically the ridiculous situation where R is mapped to R yet Z is mapped to L2 despite Z technically the opposing shoulder trigger in the N64 world. Since the control stick on Switch controls is on the left, not central, Z should be mapped to L. Now we're in the bizarre world where, in F-Zero, you're using non-aligned shoulder buttons for maneuvers. It wrecks my mind. In the N64 world, L and Z were always (as far as I'm aware) used for the same function depending on whether you use the stick or d-pad (games like ISS 64 allowed for either) and why this wasn't preserved for Switch is mystifying. Probably just being lazy.
Anyway, I plan to drop my subscription renewal. I don't use it enough, and the few retro games I really want to play, I can do it by other means.
Not joining this until they add gameboy and gba
I paid for my Mariokart Expansion so that when my NSO runs out I can still pay it.
Sorry but renting DLC? No thanks, when they give up on it and turn off the servers you wont be able to use it.
@GVIL all of it
Wave Race 64 maybe?
