Update [Thu 25th Aug, 2022 01:30 BST]: Part of this Splatfest World Premiere Demo is now live. You'll be able to try out the tutorials, get some practice in, and explore the city of Splatsville. Enjoy!
Original article [Fri 19th Aug, 2022 10:30 BST]: Splatoon 3's first-ever Splatfest takes place next Saturday! And to participate, you'll need to download the Splatfest World Premiere demo from the eShop. You can't get into the demo yet, but you can at least now pre-install it so you're all ready for the big day!
Head on over to the Switch eShop (UK, US) to download the demo now. If you've already pre-ordered it, this should download automatically when you boot your Switch up and when it's connected to the internet. (Thanks for the tip, WoomyNNYes!)
The Splatfest takes place on 27th August, but you'll be able to dive into the demo from 25th August (we'll remind you, don't worry!). You'll get a chance to check out some of the game's tutorials, practice the basics, and explore the city of Splatsville. You'll also get to pick your team.
The first vote this year is between rock, paper, and scissors — and the Splatfest actually takes place on World Rock Paper Scissors Day! Those sneaky squids.
Don't forget, the full game is out on 9th September, but this demo — and the Splatfest — should give you time to get a feel for the ink once again!
Will you be downloading the demo and taking part in next week's Splatfest? Let us know!

The excitement continues to build up
Already have it downloaded and ready to go. I can't wait!
Haven't decided which team I wanna go for yet though... this is one of those "whatever" themes. XD
So I don’t need the code that was sent to my email?
@Snatcher The code is for a weeks trial of NSO that they gave everyone who downloaded the demo
@TheEnglishOtter OOOOOOOOOO. Idk how I didn’t know that. Thank you.
Downloaded the demo last night
Think I'll side with Paper for this fest, because whilst getting hit with a rock or getting a cut from using scissors is annoying, getting a slight and accidental cut from paper is one of the most frustrating experiences ever lol.
@Yosher TEAM SCISSORS! choose otherwise and your anti big man, which is kinda cringe ngl
I’m excited even just to walk around Splatsville for the first time!
@Shadeon_Koopa: Good point. I get paper cuts at my job occasionally and it’s annoying because it’s always completely preventable. Go Deep (Paper) Cut!
@Ferdinand_Von_Aegir Everyone and their grandma is gonna go with Big Man though and history has taught us that the more popular team tends to lose a lot! Not even the Biggest Man can change that!
Am I the only one that really wants to be hyped for this game but just...isn't?
Obviously, team yellow looks coolest. That's what I'll pick.
I was eating in a bar using restaurant wifi when this popped up so you could imagine my surprise when I checked my Switch.
Now that I'm back though? Downloading this IMMEDIATELY. I've had this pre-ordered since it went live and have been waiting for it to pop up ever since, I cannot wait. Team Scissors for the win by the way.
Nice! Very good to know.
Sounds like the demo went live in UK around 12-1am (based on the Splatoon 3 thread). Still not live in north america - we're 5-8 hours behind depending on time zone. I don't plan on staying up for it to go live in the US.
@Yosher I'm probably gonna go with scissors or maybe rock but definetly not paper. I'm sorry but don't like Frye.
@ZapNCrap lemme guess you chose marina in every Splatoon 2 splatfests just because she wasn't "ugly"
Removed - inappropriate
Removed - unconstructive
@Lady_rosalina Pearl isn't ugly lol, just a different design for the series. Frye on the otherhand.... Well I don't think even her mother loves that face.
@Lady_rosalina Nah I actually picked whatever I felt like in Splatoon 2 cause Pearl doesn't look like some kinda goblin. I will try to come to accept frye but I will never like the way she looks.
still not live for me :0
Yeah not live for me
@bonjong23 Hahah. Alllllright.
@ZapNCrap maybe Frye will eventually grow on you it's still soon I love all the idols so far
.... Not exactly big man he's ok but I feel he was kinda an afterthought....
North America went live at 12am Eastern Time. The demo, even as short as it is while we're waiting for the Splatfest, was an amazing experience. I finally returned to Splatoon after 1.5 years!
Looking forward to the release of this game. So we can stop hearing about it.
Downloaded the demo and you can get used to the controls just like Splatoon 2, you can also run around Splatville, or at least part of it.
The games visuals look very good using the new Nvidia tech, not noticing tones of jaggies like with previous game, which still looked fine.
@Mattock1987 You'll still be hearing about it because of the way content works in Splatoon.
@ZapNCrap Everyone was saying Pearl looked like a goblin at this poin in Splatoon 2, when the Splatfest demo was due to start. It went on for months. Frye will grow on you like Pearl did on everyone.
@twadebarcelona that’s sadly true.
@Mattock1987 It's a good thing because the Splatoon games are good fun.
Splatsville's hub is so big and complex. I just wandered around aimlessly for the first time.
@ZapNCrap Frye's fangs will take some getting used to and I would admit that she's essentially just Pearl and Marina combined, but I like how she's a cute belly dancer. People will grow on her just as they did Pearl.
Would be nice to have access to the training room to get some proper training in, but alas. I've noticed they changed the animation for switching between squid and kid - I tried squidbagging in the plaza, and it just looked like a blob
You cannot comment on the other article that speaks about how Nintendo confirmed that one of the idols of the new pop group actually identifies as female. Guess that very small, but very vocal minority that actually is butt hurt by that, tends to have their way on the internet. And guess what? That's not real life folks. I feel sooooo bad for the people that identify as jirafees. Oh, and I'm going to try the demo shortly, the game seems the same as the other Splatoon games so far, we'll see if it surprises in any way.
@FroZtedFlakerZz I thought Frye was cute....... Yeah pearl isn't ugly either.... I feel like is they covered her forehead abit more people would look at Frye differently
@Lady_rosalina Yeah, probably, her ears look a tad weird to me too, but the moon-sized forehead is the biggest detractor. I'm sure I can warm up to her design a little more eventually.
I'm so excited to try, currently downloading, I have never played a splatoon game before
THE LOBBY MAP IS HUUUGE
@johnvboy The graphical leap was better than I expected. It is much more noticeable when actually playing the game directly from your Switch vs compressed YouTube videos. Splatoon 2 looked really good IMO, but this is a marked improvement. Can't wait to see the full game in all its glory. Nintendo must keep using this FidelityFX stuff on all their future software. 3rd parties need to get on board and start using it as well. With the Switch's aging hardware, this will help greatly keeping it going for a few more years like Nintendo wants.
@vio,
Yes been very impressed so far.
It bothers me that the symbol for paper in the game is wrong.
The fingers should be together, not spread apart as that doesn't resemble paper at all.
@vio Definitely.
This is my first Splatoon and I am surprised that you can’t play Turf-War or practice at all in this demo. The NPC’s tell me I need to. I spent a good hour messing around trying to join a match. Things like getting dressed, picking my load-out, drawing a picture, voting, and even after that I still can’t practice. Really weird. Seems others cannot either as they are drawing pictures complaining out the lack of gameplay right now. Noobs like me will spend Saturday’s match just fumbling about trying to get the hang of things. I was hoping that Thursday and Friday would allow new players to get practice in.
