Update #2 [Tue 23rd Aug, 2022 19:55 BST]: Right on time! Well, maybe a little late after Sega accidentally shared its advert earlier today. But hey, at least we know officially when Sonic Frontiers launches at last!
Sonic made an appearance at this year's Gamescom Opening Night Live and during its action-packed story trailer, the blue blur revealed he will be returning to consoles on 8th November.
We now know that Sonic is searching for the missing Chaos Emeralds in a strange new world, surrounded by unusual creatures. That world is called the Starfall islands, and Sonic will need to be at his fastest in order to save the inhabitants.
Check out the trailer below, and share your thoughts on this up-to-date look on the game in the comments!
Update: While the trailer has been removed or hidden on YouTube, someone on Twitter has handily archived the Japanese ad, so we can see for ourselves what Sega let slip.
There's not much to go on here — it's simply a Japanese advert, after all — but that 8th November release date is there, loud and clear.
Original article [Tue 23rd Aug, 2022 11:00 BST]: Someone should pop some Duct tape on Sega and Sonic Frontiers! Following the news that a Taiwanese store had some promotional material for the game that revealed a November release date and some upcoming DLC, Sega's Japanese YouTube account accidentally uploaded a short trailer for the game.
The company has since removed it, but not before eagle-eyed fans (and Nibel) on Twitter spotted the trailer, which contained a release date — 8th November.

This is slightly different from the date we reported last Friday, but seeing as it's from Sega itself, it's likely to be correct.
Sonic Frontiers is due to appear during Gamescom's Opening Night Live, which kicks off at 11am PDT / 7pm BST tonight. At this point, it seems very likely that the release date will be officially confirmed then, and Sega just accidentally uploaded the Japanese version of the trailer a bit too early. Oopsie!
Perhaps Sega could use this adorable little character, Koco, to distract us from this accidental reveal?

Why is everything surrounding the reveal of information for this game so awkward and fumbling like this.
Timing is very rough. Sure it's not up against BotW 2 but still, Switch is insanely packed from Splatoon 3 to Pokemon Scarlet/Violet but also November 8th is a day before GoW Ragnarok.
Sega: Whoops, I just posted this early, please dont look!! Delete
It's just another type of hype advertising but it is nice to know a date, I bet they were going to give this out tonight
This is going to be early access if it’s anything like Colors Ultimate and Origins’ launches but their fanbase allows this so why shouldn’t they? 77 days from release and they’ve shared as little gameplay as possible while going out of their way to prevent recordings.
I’m so happy we finally have a release date. But my god the marketing and overall information sharing for this game sucks! I’m going to get it day one, and I’m sure I’m going to enjoy it, but I wish sega would fix there marketing game.
This game has to compete with God of War: Ragnorak and also with Pokémon: Scarlet and Violet. Let's hope that there are enough Sonic hardcore fans left that will buy this game.
Only the gaming industry accidentally releases early info - on a near constant basis. Like...who is naive enough to not see through this marketing? Only one consumer group is child-like enough to not understand this decade old marketing ploy.
I wonder if developers have it written down on the snack room calendar. "accidental release date release - call news outlets"
@RareFan They exist, but even if they don't come out in huge numbers on release day, the game will sell well for the holidays. Even the worst Sonic games still sell great as evergreen titles, especially on Nintendo platforms.
Did anyone reupload the video? Been looking for one but not found it, only the screenshot with the release date on it
@Sonos It’s definitely marketing. I mean some game company’s follow lurkers twitter accounts! It’s free marketing and hype, why stop it lol.

Me: I can't believe SEGA are really sticking with a 2022 release date for this game.
Also Me: I can believe SEGA would be happy to put this game out in 2022.
Looking like a solid 6
@Snatcher @sonos Err no, it's a terrible way to announce a release date. There's no way any major publisher or developer would want it handled this way. Ever.
Videogame release dates matter because the mass audience do not purchase more than an average of 2 or 3 major AAA releases in a year. That average is actually much lower in reality because 1 of those 2 or 3 games is almost certainly FIFA or COD!
If you don't tell them your release date at the right time and in good time, you run the risk of missing out. This means you need to get that release date out in the best possible way - and there is a genuine science behind this. Leaking it is the worst way. People doubt it. People question it. People miss it. People are distracted by the other things you actually wanted to avoid with your actual planned announcement! The right day. The right time. The right places. It is not left to chance.
To be clear, this is not the core audience that will always buy the game week 1. This is the extended audience. This dictates the extent of your drop off in week 2 and your resulting sales curve.
A bad announce strategy will correlate with a worse sales curve. It's a fact.
Yeah, I'm sure this leak is intentional. It's just a different tactic to testing the waters and seeing public opinion. They'll probably change the release date to another if enough people will say it's not good timing.
That's not a good date, going to get crushed beneath god of war ragnarok
Isn't that the same date the rumored Avatar: The Last Airbender game is supposed to be releasing? I'd better let my employers know I won't be able to make it to work that day because I'm scheduled to die in a horrible accident, but I should start feeling better after a day or two.
I have zero faith that this will not be awful
Why release when god of war is releasing… poor marketing decisions being made with this seemingly great game
SEGA Try NOT to Leak Your Reveal Challenge (IMPOSSIBLE)
@Not_Soos oh my god. That would suck! Guess I’m just going to have to decide when the time comes.
@Zeldawakening Tons of people who don’t have PlayStation who’ll be interested in this on Switch/Xbox/PC. Also a completely different demographic to the one GoW is going for
This is one of games I am not excited about the marketing for this is terrible and when trailers was shown and gameplay it looks really generic and bland just looks like student modded Sonic in open world. Like it or hate BOTW they delivered the concept well in open world.
They really better fix this or they really going to disappoint the fanbase again like with Sonic Forces.
Watch them announce that there will be eight different editions of this game during their official release date announcement.
@RareFan I wasn't aware sonic fans were in the market for God of War I thought they'd be too busy complaining about whichever releases next
@Gamergirl94
Well, although Sonic Forces was a disappointment, people still bought it. Sonic is way too popular to fail. If Sonic 06 couldn't kill the franchise, Frontiers will also not.
With all these free time and 4 years in development for this game, Sega can't make the excuse that the game was rush by November. If the game end up bad it's all on them and Sonic Team, if the game is good then this is a winning formula for Sonic Team going forward.
@EarthboundBenjy ugh I REALLY want to be into this game, but you're right, which makes me super cautious. This game is so up in the air right now. Could be trash, could be great.
@Gamergirl94 If anyone hates BOTW they are just plain stupid
I must be the only one here who doesn't care about God of War at all. Played the original games followed by God of War 2018 and while they were pretty good I have no need for another and the novelty of listening to Incredible Hulk wannabe Kratos has just gotten old now.
@ChakraStomps Its not a perfect game chill 💀
I’m actually looking forward for this! And will probably be the only game I buy this Xmas as Nintendo has failed to deliver any titles that appeals to me.
As a Sega fan boy from the beginning, it pains me to think if what Sega has become. I loved the hungry Sega days when Nintendo had a monopoly on developers and Sega was making all the Master System games themselves, while killing it in the arcade. Fast forward multiple hardware skus, and a Japanese parent company that didn't care about their American Arm and you now have 5-6 developers at a table saying, "hey let's surprise everyone and make another Sonic game!". Who cares. They have the greatest arcade games and an awesome catalog of IP's and they sit around thinking of ways to make another sonic game. Sad.
I know it’s Sonic, but even then I’ve never seen the writing be on the wall for a game this hard, this fast.
Will probably get it later down the road on sale.
Scoring 7/10s at the speed of sound!
I have been very skeptical regarding Frontiers. The announcement trailer had me thinking it looked pretty, but it was one big empty open world. This trailer fills me some confidence, but I think if Sega released a demo, it would help make other peoples minds up. Saying that, my 4 year old is OBSESSED with Sonic at the moment, so I don't think I'll have a choice in picking this one up 🤣
It’s looking really good now!
I can't wait. Im sure you could make the assumption i"d be picking it up judging by my profile pic. But looks better than before, I'm excited!
Cosmetically it looks good. I somehow still have no idea what the core gameplay is
That completely sold me. The music as well, MMM.
This game look amazing! Didnt expect it to be lik this. Great Job Sega.
I’m personally pretty excited, but it’s so close to Pokémon Scarlet and Violet!
Looks great!!
Super duper longer-than-the-minimum-comment great!!
@Crockin
You run around in this big open world and have to find some big bosses, similar to Shadow of the Colossus. If you defeat them, you get a key that can open a portal to those high speed special zones. If you manage them, you get a Chaos Emerald as a reward. The Chaos Emeralds are the main collectable in this game.
Finally, a trailer that actually makes the game look good.
About time we get a release date! For a franchise that's about going fast it sure took a slow time revealing the date.
This honestly looks like any other 3D Sonic ever done, but with better graphics, which is not something good. They should just stick to make 2D Sonic games.
Would definitely like a demo to test out how Sonic controls and how much stuff is on the islands. Also the Koco is cute, but hasn't a patch on Chao. Bring them back 🥲
Looks good, but considering the 3D Sonic curse, I'm firmly in the wait and see camp. I also have a bad feeling the Switch version will be way too inferior.
@Dev9417 they've published screenshots, it looks like a solid port visually.
I'm going to buck the negativity trend and say I think this looks like a lot of fun! I can't wait to speed around some open environments as my favourite hedgehog, solving puzzles and defeating baddies!
@RareFan While Sonic 06 didn't kill the franchise, it killed the reputation of the series in the process. Games retroactively were considered worse afterwards. It took until Mania to undo the damage done to the Genesis/Mega Drive titles, to answer IGN's infamous question of "Was Sonic Ever Good In The First Place?"
Of course, when you release Sonic Boom in 2014 and Sonic Forces in 2017, and Sonic Colors Ultimate in 2021, it's easy to repeat the damage that Sonic 06 did, just in minor ways because it's Sonic. It was bound to be a bad, rushed out game, right?
Ok, they say there is a pre-order bonus, but doesnt say where to order it from.
Well, i think that SEGA made a great mistake.
I like the idea of returning to a proper meaty Adventure style story. I really do. The only thing that makes me hesistant...I am still no more sold on the gameplay than previously. I want to love it, but it still looks like nothing new. I am warmer than I was, for the story at least, but...hmm..undecided.
@Nua
What about Colours and Generations? Those games where good.
@RareFan Both were good games, I never said they weren't. They were released in 2010 and 2011. But if you want to count the big releases since then, 2013's Sonic Lost World was not what most fans wanted, and did not live up to the expectations of Colors and Generations. Not a bad game by any means, just not what most expected. 2014's Sonic Boom had so many issues from SEGA swapping the console to Wii U that it was like Sonic 06 all over again, terribly buggy game, should have never been released in the state it was, so many ideas left on the cutting room floor. 2017's Mania gets critical acclaim, whereas the game "from the team that brought you Colors and Generations" 2017's Sonic Forces, a game that gets criticized more as years go on. 2021's Sonic Colors Ultimate, taking one of Sonic's highest praised games, and botching what should have been an easy port, easy money, easy praise.
Imagine instead if the worst we got was 7/10s for Sonic Lost World on Wii U. If there weren't clearly "bad" Sonic games released afterwards. The series would have a stronger reputation. Sonic as a brand is great, it's not going to die out anytime soon, it's a cash cow for a reason. Sonic could have been enjoying over a decade of quality titles, where the joke is "he had a rough 2000s, but that's all behind him now" instead of how Sonic has had a rough transition in to 3D, and still is suffering from a 3D identity crisis.
Strange I watched this trailer and actually liked it. Seems to be more Sonic than I thought. I still prefer a lighthearted, happy and colourful Sonic but this could still be fun.
I want so bad to be wrong about this game. It seems really rushed, and the open world aspect doesn’t seem to be handled well. I worry the game will feel empty, objects randomly placed, story forced etc. But we’ll see.
