Ahead of the release of Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope, Ubisoft has announced the original game, Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, has now been played by over 10 million people.
Today actually marks the fifth anniversary since its release in 2017, and yes - it's now been played by that many Switch users. Creative director Davide Soliani even thanks fans in a message via social media:
Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope is due to arrive on the Nintendo Switch on 20th October. It's a whole new adventure, where you'll team up with some new and existing characters to take on a new threat.
When the original Mario + Rabbids game was released on the Nintendo Switch, we gave it an excellent nine out of ten stars and said it was a "must have" turn-based tactical game for Switch players.

Great game. Bought a couple of years ago, but only about 1/2 way through. Need to finish so I can play the Donkey Kong DLC I bought with it.
I was looking forward to a sequel, but I'm a bit leery of this one because of the more freeform movement. But, I'm sure it will be fine.
One of the first Switch games I ever got. I vividly remember getting it as a birthday present whilst down at my uncle's house across the country and playing it non-stop for the rest of the night. If I could describe it in one sentence from my personal experience, it would be 'the tactics game for people who don't like tactics games'. Brilliant game, Sparks of Hope looks very promising, though like the original, I'll probably just wait on one of those typical Ubisoft sales
Well-deserved & awesome game. Got the Gold Edition of this game on sale ages ago (it’s perpetually on significant sales) and I was pleasantly surprised how good it is! And I don’t even really dip into strategy RPG’s, but this game was a treat. Easy to grasp and lots of charm & wit throughout.
I recently went back to it to finally play through the Donkey Kong DLC after a couple years of not touching the game after I finished the main base portion and that was a nice delight as well.
Hopefully the upcoming sequel improves an already terrific experience, inspires some more variations of Mario RPG's (like say I don't know... a Super Mario RPG 2?! A new Mario & Luigi game?!) and also gives Nintendo even more confidence to lend some more of their more dormant IPs to capable developers with their oversight!
… Wun can only hope.
Probably the most unexpected game of its year, and the bigger surprise is that it turned out to be good.
Well deserved and a nice breath of fresh air coming from Ubisoft. Can't wait for Sparks of Hope.
I played this beautiful game. It's my favorite mario game on the switch. its got deep down strategy. humerous rabbids. and cool amiibo unlocks. my favorite was the rumblebee! thanks hasbro! no thank you peter griffin.
I am, to this day, surprised how tolerable the Rabbids are in this game.
I would have done a double dip if the Gold Edition had everything on the cart.
I love this game. Deserved!
My sister´s favorite game.
One of my favorites.
I love XCOM 2. Mario + Rabbids is like a "light" XCOM.
Question : Have you played the original entry in this series yet?
Me : STILL NOT FINISHED YET !
Well-deserved, and one of my all-time favorite Ubisoft titles alongside Rayman Origins/Legends. I'm still a little shocked Nintendo is allowing Ubisoft to publish a series that heavily utilizes licensed Super Mario characters, though.
I like this game. It's well done and fun, but I've started it twice and forgotten about it around the 2nd world each time. Guess it's not for me.
Remember when everyone hated this when they saw the leaked poster. I mean for understandable reason. I’m just glad it turned out as good as it did, because I love it!
I remember allowing myself to buy a switch when i got my new job in august 2017, and this was one of the first games i actually bought,.. bringing it with me to my mont ventoux expedition a week later...
Davide Soliani obviously LOVES Nintendo with a deep passion. With this game, he created a Mario title that sits comfortably right next to some of Nintendo's best work.
I have to believe this was immensely gratifying for him.
Best Mario game Nintendo never made
@Ralizah I imagine they have a heavy veto on any decisions so there won’t be loads of creative freedom. You’re right though, Ubisoft did a good job, it makes me wonder if Nintendo should’ve contracted out some of their sports games.
5 years?!?!? I feel old…
Quite enjoyed this game but I'm still sad Yoshi isn't in the sequel.
May just replay this game instead when SoH comes out.
Amazing and beautiful game, i cant wait for the next one where you can run freely.
Refreshing game from ubisoft, well done!
Finally got this game and its DLC for 75% off in the sale a few months ago and absolutely loved it! Way surpassed my expectations as a newbie to tactics games and now I can’t wait for Sparks of Hope!
@Roz1281 This is exactly the experience I have with the game. There's always something just ever so slightly more interesting to do with any given day than go back and play Mario+Rabbids. That said, the game is in no way a bad game. Glad so many people embraced it.
@Fizza Even as a fan of tactical shooters like this (well, you know, the more serious ones), I loved every moment of this game and its dlc. But yeah, even someone who doesn't usually play the genre should probably try this one and will probably find themselves having a great time with it.
But this game has also been heavily discounted.
So are people here going to say that this is a success or an example of a devalued game/IP?
@Snatcher I feel like I'm the only one who didn't dislike the idea. It took me a while to actually get the game, but I am somewhat of a fan of the rabbids. Maybe because I mostly just played Rabbids Go Home and had a fun time with it. I never understood the craze about The Minions though and thought they were a blatant Rabbids clone.
But then again, I was also excited by Wind Waker's art direction, coming from just handheld Zelda and a used Gamecube being my first home console, I never understood how anyone could dislike the cartoony look. I love cartoons and I love Zelda. I like tactics, Mario, Rabbids, and the Switch. I can surely come up with things I like that wouldn't work combined, but if it really didn't work, I doubt Nintendo would have allowed it (and I'm sure there are examples that prove me wrong as well).
The game that convinced me to buy a Switch because I was a big rabbids fan in middle school and an even bigger fan of Mario.
This doesn’t mean they sold 10 million though, because of the NSO game trials that were for this game. However this game really should sell a lot seeing as the gold edition is always like 15-20$ on the eshop
@Richnj it's all just a different look on things. 10m is a big number, and while numbers don't lie, they can easily be used by liars (or just mostly honest meaning people just as well) to create the idea they want to create. A bit like how guns don't kill. "Success" is an idea. I've never felt more failed in life then when people considered me "successful", and never felt richer than now that people often mistake me for "poor". If they sold it for 50m, and two people bought it, they'd use the 100m figure, not the 2 units sold, if they want to push the further "success".
Hate to be the contrarian, but I got this game along with my Switch when I first got it and I got about halfway through the game before I sold it (and Pokken Tournament as well). To date, I’ve only sold two Switch games I’ve purchased, so yeah…. It’s an interesting launch title for sure, but just wasn’t for me. Glad such a strange title has so many fans though.
I literally bought the Gold Edition of this game when it was on sale about a month ago and just finished the main story this past weekend. It is easily one of my favorite games on the Switch and I regret ignoring it for so long. Now onto the Donkey Kong content.
