Update [Wed 6th Jul, 2022 09:00 BST]: Both Suda51 and James Gunn have taken to Twitter to clarify that neither of them has any involvement with this remake project. Suda's company, Grasshopper Manufacture, also has "nothing to do with development".
Answering a follow-up tweet, director Gunn also clarified that he had no ill will for the project, just that he had no knowledge of it until recently:
Original Story [Tue 5th Jul, 2022 13:30 BST]: Producer and head of Dragami Games, Yoshimi Yasuda, has announced that PS3 and Xbox 360 cult classic Lollipop Chainsaw is getting the remake treatment in 2023, IGN reports.
No details or platforms have been announced yet, but given the pedigree working on the original release, we'd be surprised if we don't see this on the Switch. The game's creative director was none other than Suda51 of No More Heroes fame. Lollipop Chainsaw is also the first and only game that Guardians of the Galaxy film director James Gunn has ever written for. While it's not clear that Grasshopper Manufacture is returning to develop the remake, we're still confident!
Here's producer Yasuda's statement on Twitter, where he confirms there will need to be a few changes to the remake when it eventually releases next year:
One of the few things that the developers will need to change is the soundtrack. The original consists of 15 licensed songs, and Yasuda has stated above that more new music will need to be created. Yasuda also wants to make the most of the better hardware, and will be "taking a more realistic approach to the graphics this time".
This over-the-top hack-and-slash game takes excess to a whole new level and stars an 18-year-old high school cheerleader called Juliet Starling who beats up zombies with flips, kicks, and her trusty chainsaw. Oh, and her boyfriend is a decapitated head attached to her waist. There's a reason for that, we promise. Lollipop Chainsaw didn't resonate with critics back in 2012, but the game has gained a cult following over the years.
If you've never played Lollipop Chainsaw before and have no idea what's in store, here's a trailer for you — with plenty of blood, gore, and guts, so watch at your discretion!
Have you played Lollipop Chainsaw before? Would you like to see this on the Switch? Let us know!

So the main reason they're remaking this is because of the music licenses expiring.
It's kind of funny that they'll rehab the whole game just because they're too cheap to pay somebody's music royalties. That's some corporate logic right there.
I certainly hope so, I love Suda games and never got the chance to play this before.
If the Switch gets a proper port and not something like the messes known as the GTA trilogy or the Kingdom Hearts collection, I'll be there for sure.
This ain’t coming to Switch.
@HammerGalladeBro I highly doubt this will come to Switch other than a cloud version. The remake is gonna go for realistic approach graphics and that will look bad on Switch. Also for 2023.
It’s better that they leave Switch out of this and release it for PS5, XSX/S and PC!!!
I don't know that I really even want remakes/remasters of anything anymore. I just want games playable on more modern hardware, at a higher resolution, with all their content and without any performance issues they would've had from being played on the old original hardware, and fixing up controls if they were wonky.
While we're at it, can we also fix the entire copywrite system too? So games don't get lost because of legal nonsense? Including things like licensed music, 'cos all of this is kinda driving me crazy...
“Most of the better hardware”.
So this ain’t coming to Switch. Switch isn’t better hardware lol
@anoyonmus Sure, because there's no way a PS3 game could run on the Switch... No sir...
Bayonetta, Dragon's Dogma, Valkyria Chronicles, LA Noire, Dark Souls, and Darksiders? I assure you, none of those would even boot on the Switch.
Anyways, here's hoping Shadows of the Damned is the next Suda51 game to get a remake, not that that could run on the Switch, what with PS3 being the advanced powerhouse technology that it is.
@KayFiOS this is not a PS3 port, sir.
This is a remake not a port. This remake will most likely not come to Switch. It will benefit more on powerful hardware.
They said they want to use better hardware and a more realistic approach to graphics which the Switch cannot fulfill.
Suda woulda coulda.
@anoyonmus If Dark Souls Remastered can get away with just being the original Dark Souls on the Switch, I'm pretty sure they could just port Lollipop Chainsaw to the Switch and still call it a remake. Besides, we've had remakes of Crash Bandicoot and Spyro run on Switch, and do it pretty well for the system. They might not run as smooth as their PS4 and Xbox One counterparts, but I don't think anyone who owns those games on Switch mind too much.
@LittleGhost It's also not backwards compatible.
@TheCrabMan If IGN makes all your decisions for you, that's truly unfortunate.
@KayFiOS crash and Spyro weren’t even that graphically demanding but this lollipop chainsaw remake is going for realistic graphics which can’t be done on Switch.
Also they can’t port the original to Switch because of reasons said above
@anoyonmus everytime someone says a game couldn't possibly be ported to the switch, they almost always get proven wrong. I mean this last direct had everyone swearing Nier and Persona 5 were going to be cloud version. Yet here they are with their own cartridges. And prior to this there was Witcher 3, Doom 2016/Eternal, Dark Souls Remake, No Man's Sky, and so on. Anything can be ported to the switch if the team porting it is willing. Sure sacrifices have to be made, but it is never impossible.
oh this is very exciting!! I always wanted to play this game but didn't get a chance to before!!
@anoyonmus You're certainly making a lot of assumptions about what an unseen game's visuals will look like. No More Heroes didn't release on the Switch with the PS3 graphics; they realized that the original art style gave it its identity, and threw out the remaster's visuals like the hot garbage they were!
Also, we're getting a remake of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII this year on Switch. That game boasts realistic visuals, and it's still being ported, and at this moment, they haven't announced it will be a cloud version.
Yeah, it'll come out on Switch and Xbox, I think. PlayStation won't touch anything with a lot of Japanese flair without censoring it a ton. Just look at what happened with the likes of Hyperdimension and Senran Kagura.
Lollipop Chainsaw is VERY Japanese and it's a great game but that was on PS3 when Sony actually let heavily Japanese games on their consoles.
I wouldn't WANT it on PlayStation.
I’m beyond stoked for this news and I do hope for it to come to something Nintendo related, but it involving Warner Bros. and the better hardware, and will be "taking a more realistic approach to the graphics this time" remark leaves me with doubts that it will, at least not on Switch.
But Suda needs to contact James Gunn and get a sequel happening too.
Beat this game like 4 times back in the day. Excited about this!
The original 360 version looks like better graphics than most Switch games. I would love to play the original on Switch, seeing as it never came to Nintendo consoles.
Hopefully it will retain the anime costumes from Highschool of the Dead and Deadman Wonderland and come to Switch.
Looking forward to it, since I didn't play the original. Even if it does come to Switch, I'll probably buy it for PS5 or Series X first, for a better overall experience. I might even go back and buy an OG copy for 360 if it isn't too expensive...
Wish they would do killer 7 instead never got to finish the bats*** crazy game
@HammerGalladeBro Well, y'all know the drill... everyone start asking Suda to bring the tig o'l bitty remake to Switch.
@anoyonmus did you get your info from a magic 8 ball or wat.
@locky-mavo finally somebody reasonable.
Honestly if we’re talking Suda games, I’d much prefer a new Killer 7, Killer is Dead, Samurai Champloo and/or Wrestling games from him.
… Wun can only hope.
Wasn't lollipop chainsaw a mediocre game that purely relies on gore and "fan service"?
It seemed interesting when it came out, unfortunately I did not own a Wii at the time. If it does come to the Switch then I would be willing to try it.
@DTfeartheBEARD The big question is, how much of a graphical update will this game receive?
Like are we talking Unreal Engine 4 or 5?
If it's 4, then it could possibly be ported to Switch.
On the other hand, the question of whether or not this game will get some form of censorship due to current day politics is also something I ask because we know once this game will release again, it will cause quite a fuss with Kotaku and Resetera.
@TheMelodiusRose I’m not trolling. This is not a port, it’s a remake. Why are people getting confused here?
This is a remake which is built from the ground up. Not a straight port.
@TheMelodiusRose well kingdom hearts came out on a 7th gen technically and that’s cloud.
A "more realistic" graphical presentation and the loss of (assumedly) most of the licensed soundtrack means this is 100% a hard pass for me.
I love the original, for all its many faults, and that cartoonish presentation and soundtrack are big, big reasons for that, without them it's just not Lollipop Chainsaw.
EDIT: James Gunn has confirmed on Twitter that neither he nor Suda are involved in this, so yeah...hard, HARD pass.
@anoyonmus Crisis. Core.
since this game will problaby use Unreal Engine 5, a game engine Switch can't handle and this game is targeting next-gen consoles, i don't expect this game releasing on Switch, maybe on Switch sucessor.
Perhaps this article ought to be updated to mention these tweets by James Gunn:

https://twitter.com/JamesGunn/status/1544360985732861952
@anoyonmus y'all don't get tired? Y'all said the same for Witcher 3, the doom games. Mortal Kombat 11 Wolfenstein, nier and even persona... Give it a rest not saying it's coming but there's a chance. It's a PS3 game.....
Better hardware could definitely mean better hardware compared to what systems the games where originally on
Maybe they should have waited for Switch confirmation?
Articles like this just confuse people who see them on NintendoLife...
If this is a remake with current HW requirements, Switch is not for sure.
@anoyonmus switch has games with "realistic graphics".....
@patbacknitro18
in terms of persona 5 the game was a very highly requested switch port so i assume that many people did believe the game could run on switch.
with nier i can see why some could be sceptical since there were frame drops on ps4 and we have yet to see how well the game maintains its targeted 30fps. (edit: it does seem like the port is in good hands)
it can generally feel like a roll of the dice when it comes to switch ports, iirc it often comes down to the engine used.
in the end its just a wait and see situation and everything else is merely speculation.
I want to like this game but nothing so far (Anything Suda51 to be honest)
Call me when they bring back Madworld (now that's a game i would love to have if given the remake treatment)
@TheCrabMan I don’t think IGN is it, but your free to have your opinion.
I think there is a good chance it comes on the switch. Idk why people are saying it can’t run.
Never played the original, but this looks quite interesting. You could say that this is a rather traditional game, where the man is... the head of the house.
@LittleGhost It's either that or leave it stuck on one system. When it comes to properties with licensed music, Daria didn't suffer from not having it anymore. And MTV is more wealthy then Grasshopper. I will also say that the original instrumental music kicks butt.
@russell-marlow I don't recall those sites having final say over anything. And that would be awfully rich coming from them, given how immature and hateful their user bases' behavior is.
Anywho this is cool news. If it comes to Switch I'll nab it. Never played the original.
Cult classic? Really? I always thought it was a mediocre game.
@Giancarlothomaz Unreal Engine 5 functions perfectly fine on the Switch. It just has settings set to lower for it much like lower end PCs. Anything on Unreal Engine these days make it a much much higher chance it will come to Switch due to its incredible ease of versatility, same with any other platform.
@anoyonmus
I mean, want it to be on the Switch as much as the next guy, probably more so that most here in this case. But ya got to be realistic, WB is involved and they ain’t even bringing MultiVersus to the Switch.
Then there’s the talk of wanting to work with better hardware for more realistic graphics. 3rd party devs are already starting to drop gen 8 consoles, so by the time 2023 comes around, I wouldn’t be surprised if gen 8 consoles are completely dropped by then, leaving the Switch, which is essentially running on gen 7 hardware.
But until they announce the target consoles, who knows? Maybe they’ll hire one of the Switch port pros to bring it over. I’m just not getting my hopes up for a Switch version just yet.
@Lady_rosalina I never said about this with Witcher 3 and crap. I didn’t even know what the heck Witcher 3 is at the time.
@locky-mavo switch isn't gen 8.... Wiiu was..... Switch was 9 since gen goes by time.... Not power......
I'm getting this on PS either way, loved the original game.
@locky-mavo @anonymous Just thought I would chime in, that same Warner Brothers decided to bring Hogwarts Legacy, a game deemed far too hardware intensive to ever dream to be on Switch, to the Switch. Key point here? They are using Unreal Engine. If Lollipop Chainsaw remake uses the unreal engine then a Switch port is highly likely due to it running native on the Switch. If it's worth whatever downscale it will have is a completely different ball park, as well as how much money and optimisation the dev / pub team is willing to do.
Nowadays it becomes less of a 'this game has hardcore graphics so it won't come to < insert platform here >', rather than is the Engine used compatible with the device. That is what makes Epic's latest engine just that much more versatile to work with.
Would be curious to see what they do with the game regardless. It certainly has its charm back in the day, and strongly due to its choice of soundtrack as well. Fingers crossed it'll be good.
While Gun and 51 are not involved in the remake. It may well follow, beat for beat, what they did with the original. At this stage we don't know if this is a full remake or a HD remaster with new music and more realistic textures, slightly more detailed models. As this seems like a cheap project, that doesn't want to license music, I wouldn't be surprised.
@Link-Hero I don't think the movie industry does licence music temporarily or cheaply like the games industry does. I have never ever heard of a movie not being rereleased because of music licencing issues, so if it happens that's a rare thing. With games there are countless examples.
It was a pretty fun little game back in the day. I'd imagine it would be considered "problematic" these days so I'm not sure how a remake/remaster would fare.
Anything with Gunn involved is a stained product. Disgusting.
@Rambler so, the one movie example you're referencing (which I've never heard of) had a delayed release and wasn't altered in any way? This doesn't exactly prove me wrong. Monkey Dust isn't a movie, the original creator is dead, and I watched that series back when it originally aired on BBC Two. Given todays political climate and the content of those sketches, there is no way that series will ever see another release. Come on, Geoff. It's not rocket science.
I had this on the 360. I never liked it and never got past the first few levels but I've always wanted to revisit it too to see how I felt about it now so I'll be looking forward to this
Well, my enthusiasm for this release just went out the window. If Suda51 isn't part of this, then we might very well have a repeat of No More Heroes on the PS3. It'll still be a way to play Lollipop Chainsaw, but not the best way if it doesn't stay true to the artistic design of the original. This is definitely now the kind of game I'll wait to hear reviews on before I pick it up when it goes on sale, which is disappointing.
@Bayjax Mind explaining yourself?
@wuntyme8 @Williamfuchs420 I, too, would love to see Killer7 on modern consoles.
But I guess that the PC remaster is the only thing we will get.
I guess maybe I don't fully understand how this could/should work, but how could you do a remake (instead of just a remaster) that doesn't involve the biggest creative forces? I guess I'll reserve judgement 'til it comes out. But maybe I'll just hunt down a copy of the PS3 game if I really need to play it and the remake isn't very faithful.
@Chocobo_Shepherd Well, remakes without the original directors are pretty common. As a matter of fact, the resident evil 4 remake is being developed without Shinji mikami.
I think it's better that Suda51 isn't wasting his time with this project. He should move forward instead of revisiting one of his old and weak works.
Also, I wouldn't call this game "a cult classic". It's more like a forgotten tittle. Suda51 himself didn't even referenced it in Travis strike again.
This game is probably one of the few Suda51 works that could be worked without him.
@Switch_Pro Gunn had one. gross. tweet. about 15 years ago, back when Twitter was mainly used for comedians to blurt one liners. It wasn't a particularly funny joke considering the subject matter, but it was a joke nonetheless, and for some dumb reason people like this vilify Gunn despite his light-hearted albeit crude creativity of the last decade. The overblown outcry led to Disney firing him, and putting a halt on Guardians of the Galaxy 3. Because of a really old, bad joke.
Any fan of Gunn's storied body of work would know the type of humour he tends to convey. It's not always appropriate, but neither is Suda's so it makes sense why they collaborated with Lollipop Chainsaw. His short films with Nathan Fillion et al for instance were hilarious, but not quite family friendly. It doesn't make him a monster.
@HarmanSmith you know if that pc port is playable on mac? I got a macbook air last year might just get it on pc
@onex I figured it's some nonsense like that, thanks for filling me in.
Loved the story and zany concept of the original; but the gameplay was awful. Interesting to see it’s original creators aren’t involved.
Warner Bros involvement = Heavily modified from original creative vision and 0 fan service.
I tried the original, didn't really care for it. Obvious campy feel and emphasis on overt sexual themes aside, I just don't seem to like anything from Suda 51.
That being said, I expect this to be either toned down or censored with the remaster. Which I am strongly against, whether I think the game is good or not. I am not a fan censorship in any way.
If anything, I expect a lesser experience for fans playing this on a Sony console as Sony is going full force on censorship as of late. Even Nintendo let's more slide these days then Sony, which is a joke.
@Franklin
👏👏
@Lady_rosalina
Most of those games are good, Wolfenstein however is horrible visually. At least in handheld mode.
I bought it to play on a trip to visit family in Texas back when it came out. The dynamic resolution was horrible, as were the dynamic textures.
More often than not the characters look so blurry I find the game to be unplayable.
I'd say the best example of a port done right on Switch is the Witcher 3 though. It still amazes me how good it looks and handles, from what ive played anyway.
I would prefer the original be backwards compatible on Xbox 1/series x/s. I own it but sold my 360 to buy an Xbox 1, so have never been able to play it. Can't get anything for trade in, so i basically have an expensive coaster, lol.
@Lady_rosalina
I never said it was, I simply likened its processing power to that of gen 7 consoles and the fact that 3rd party devs are starting to drop support for gen 8 consoles.
Implying that there's a strong likelihood that 3rd party devs will quite easily drop support for Switch at that time too, due to a lack of processing power.
That is messed up that they did not even ask and consult the creators.
