If, like us, you have been waiting to jump back into Subset Games' sci-fi strategy RPG, Into the Breach, then today's your lucky day. A brand new update, labelled the 'Advanced Edition', dropped today and promises to expand the excellent turn-based tactical title in various ways.
Combining new mechs, weapons, challenges and pilots, the free update will appeal to both new players and long-term fans who have been playing since the game launched way back in 2018. Those pesky Vek aren't going to know what hit them!
For a summary of what's included in the update, check out Subset's official release below:
New Mechs and Weapons: Five new mech squads and nearly forty new weapons.
New Challenges: More enemies, more bosses, and more mission objectives that add additional challenge and variety to any run.
New Pilot Abilities: The expanded roster includes four new pilots and triple the amount of skills any pilot can earn through promotions.
While the new update sounds exciting, it appears that the method of installing it may require a small amount of tactics in and of itself. Don't worry, this isn't as complex as single-handedly taking on an alien hoard, but if the update isn't downloaded automatically, you may have to open the game's options on the Nintendo Switch home screen and manually check for the software update.
For those new to Into the Breach, think Mario + Rabbits: Kingdom Battle meets the bug-crushing, armour-wearing tech of Halo, all shot through with a classic 16-bit art style and you're not a million miles away. Now that may not sound like a video game cocktail that you would want to try, but trust us, it's well worth taking a sip. We awarded the game a 9/10 in our review, calling its gameplay "some of the very best you’ll find in the strategy genre on the Switch".
This new update comes at the same time as the release of the mobile edition of the game on Apple and Android. With a physical release scheduled for October of this year, 2022 is shaping up to be a big year for Into the Breach.
Are you excited to see all the expansion that the recent update brings? Or perhaps you are heading into the game for the first time? Let us know in the comments!

Mech-ticulously crafted game!
And this some amazing support and love shown for the game by the dev.
Wasn't expecting so much content. I know what I'm playing later.
Better than Mario Strikers' update.
This game is amazing and I enjoyed my time with it, but it stressed me the heck out so I dropped it before beating a campaign. With new content, maybe now's a good time to jump back in.
I’ve slept on buying this for tooooo long. Now I’m in a predicament where this game was released in a world when the Front Mission remakes weren’t a thing. Now I have to choose… Now that those remakes are on the horizon, it’s making my eventual purchase even more difficult.
They each have their own charms I know but I can’t shake the feeling I’d like the larger maps of Front Mission.
Who am I kidding, I’ll be buying both!
One of the best games ever!
This one and FTL = infinite replay value
This game is excellent.
I’m a chess player and I love strategy games. But this game exceeded my expectations when I started playing it. So many options and moves that make you think about every single move multiple times over. Played it once till 6 AM on a workday / night before I realised what time it was. I love it.
Hell yea I'm excited. This and battle brothers is all my switch does.
This game is now available for free to Netflix subscribers, at least on iOS.
I didn't even know an update was in the works. Finally a reason to return to it.
@Rykdrew Yes mate! Despite beating the below, I will always be happy to pick these up for another try:
Slay the Spire
Monster Train
Griftlands
Hades
Dead Cells
Return of the Dead Gods
FTL
Returnal
Into the Breach.
I'm still waiting for a sale on it. I've had it wishlisted for a year.
@xmkbest Thanks for the reminder! Just downloaded and it plays great 👍🏼
It's interesting. I'm a huge fan of tactics games like Advance Wars and tactical RPGs like Triangle Strategy and Fire Emblem. Love Front Mission 3. Actually also really like FTL (why is that not on Switch?!). But something about the presentation of this just immediately puts me off, and I'm not sure what it is.
@msvt 33% off on the U.S. eshop right now.
I played sooo much of this game, until Slay the Spire enthralled me early this year.
I unlocked all but the secret squads, but never gave Hard mode an honest try. This new content is so generous and awesome news! can’t rush back to Vek-busting just yet, though, since
SD Gundam has me too busy at the moment.
@CANOEberry
I can’t remember - have you tried Into the Breach? This is another supremely high-value game I bet you’d enjoy.
This is a really cool game. The moments when you realize you’re not going to be able to save everyone or defeat every enemy, and you have to start taking desperate measures just to squeak by are very satisfying.
@hel105
Thank you.. just grabbed it!
Such a good game! Bought it day one, played through every set of Mechs, can't wait to play more!
@Ralizah wow, I loved this game, but advance wars' look puts me off the same way this does you. Ironically, i hate "retro" graphics, & i also hate mech games, so I've never played front mission, but the gameplay of this game is great. I love fire emblem games, too, but i wasn't feeling triangle strategy. The story was too boring to me.
I preordered the physical version of this a while ago and just waiting until it releases sometime in October I believe. Can’t wait to try it.
Awesome! Free content? Yes please!
This game is a gem! Go get it if you’re a fan of strategy games.
@a_brave_new_geek Wow you have a really good taste in games!!
@Rykdrew Abrigado!
I'd also add these as replayable GOATs:
Spelunky 2
Civ 6
Risk of Rain 2
Downwell
Cracked Into the Breach open again last night and what a great thing the update does!
They squared the replayability!
Fantastic game already and this looks like a meaty update!
@Teksetter Thank you so much for remembering me, and for the recommendation 😊
I happen to know that you are spot on (again), because this game definitely works for me... having played it for some 100+ hours already! I haven't completed all the objectives as yet (there are some very fun squad builds in there I want to try), so I look forward to picking this one back up when the days are shorter - Ben Prunty's music seems to work better for me in cooler seasons.
I hope you will keep the recommendations coming. Also, I wanted to write you a longer reply in the forums before I disappear completely into paddling season, but I'm not sure you always get my messages (either that, or my forum comments contain some faux pas that are better disregarded 😁). If we don't exchange words sooner, I hope you enjoy this post-COVID summer! You've earned it!
@CANOEberry
Thank you for the reply, and rest assured I receive and truly appreciate every message and post you send my way. I simply don’t respond as quickly as I should, especially lately with work, family drama, summer events with the kids, plumbing catastrophes, unplanned automobile purchases, and just general world affairs all sapping my energy in varying degrees. I apologize and will be more mindful going forward.
I suspected you’d played Into the Breach and it is great, isn’t it? That electric blitzkreig mech could wipe out the entire screen in a shot, sometimes! I zapped and blasted and bumped Vek around doing my best Pacific Rim impression for 165 hours, though I fear a good portion of that was me dozing at late night with the controller in my lap. I’m almost afraid to boot it up and see all the new content, for fear it will suck another 100 hours away. I have such backlog anxiety already!
Fondly wishing you bon voyage as you prepare to paddle the wild waterways of the Great North! 🛶 😁
I’ll be floating about here in the NL forums whenever you find time to write.
