While we've seen plenty of pretenders to the throne, many Switch fans are of the opinion that the official Pro Controller is still the best pad to use when you're playing on the TV or in tabletop mode. It's comfortable, has a good D-Pad and offers the full range of features – motion control, HD Rumble and NFC support – some of which are often lacking in third-party alternatives.
However, GameTraderZero – a company whose efforts we've covered in the past – thinks it has achieved the impossible and actually improved the stock Pro Controller. The firm has taken the standard pad and hand-soldered tactile button switches beneath the ABXY / LR buttons and the digital pad, providing an experience which certainly sounds different during gameplay. Furthermore, GameTraderZero has given the pad's ZL and ZR shoulder buttons 'hair triggers', so they emit a pleasant clicking sound when pressed.
If you previously found the buttons on the Pro Controller to be too spongy, then this is going to be your dream modification. While we've always considered the stock controller to be perfectly responsive, there's no denying that GameTraderZero's modded offering feels more precise. Perhaps it's just having that 'click' noise to confirm a successful button press? Whatever the justification, you can also swap out the casing and buttons for more colourful alternatives, and the store carries a wide range of different designs (the SNES / Super Famicom one is to die for).
The catch? Well, $195 is a lot of cash to spend on a controller that, in its untouched form, will only set you back sixty bucks. The high cost has a lot to do with the fact that GameTraderZero creates its own case designs and buttons specifically for these modded pads, and when you then add on the cost of fitting the clicky buttons (without them, you'll pay about $140), it's almost inevitable you're going to have to spend more than you would for a standard, stock controller.
Thanks to GameTraderZero for sending us a sample of its modded Pro Controller for this piece.

Funny, the perfect controller in my eyes would be a completely silent one (I play a lot in bed next to a sleeping wife!).
Personally I hate when controllers get too clicky sounding. It’s one of my gripes about the Xbox controllers. But, if that’s your thing, I guess you’ve got an option now!
if i'm paying two hundred bones for a controller mod it better be able to help out around the house
For me, the benchmark of a good D-pad has to be how well it can play Tetris.
Games like Puyo Puyo Tetris or Tetris 99 are practically unplayable on an official Pro Controller due to how sensitive the d-pad diagonal inputs are.
I love my 8bitdo SN30 Pro 2 for that reason, the d-pad is perfect for those kinds of games.
I'm very intrigued by this modded Pro Controller though, but the price point is surely only for the most dedicated enthusiasts.
The only problem with the Pro Controller is how mushy it feels. And the D-Pad. Not that amount of money’s worth of a problem though.
@RupeeClock So true. When I first read the title of this article, I thought it was about fixing the D-pad, which is not half as good as a Nintendo controller should be.
I also have 3 8bitdo controllers but the Pro controller was supposed to be perfect for the Switch and they have different purposes.
The Pro controller also lacks analog triggers when used on PC but it is not where it is supposed to be used so I can't consider it as a flaw unlike the D-pad.
@RupeeClock Yeah, I got super frustrated with Tetris on the Pro Controller...
For me a good d pad is one you can play Fighting games on! Unfortunately ps5’s and switches suck for just that.
Sorry but that price tag is stupid. If you are fine with this, you have too much money
Coincidentally I love the squishy as it reminds me of the controllers I grew up with. 🤷♂️🤣😂
Noooo no clicks is exactly what I love about Nintendo's pro controller! Controllers like the Xbox are so noisy
Of course, it's preference...
There are only 4 things that can improve the pro controller:
(- maybe a audio jack, but not necessary)
Clicky buttons are horrible! No thanks
I think the base controller works just fine. I personally like the sensitivity of the d pad because it feels like it actually responds.
Might just be me though
"Has a good d-pad"???
Which pro controller are you guys using, and can I have it?
I like clicky buttons and can't stand mushy ones. Gives me a better sense that they're actually getting pressed and input is happening.
Add Turbo functionality obviously. I cannot understand why every controller does not feature it.
Mechanical buttons would be amazing if that's truly what it is, for the same reasons that membrane keyboards gross me out. And the best d-pad was on the Xbox type-s controller. Proper triggers would be nice, and just fix the drift. Also something just a little bigger would be nice. Not the size of the Xbox Duke, but a little bigger than it currently is.
The Switch Pro Controller is just perfection for me, great to use, comfortable, and has a great battery life, still on my original one bought at midnight on launch day.
I could buy a few 8-Bitdo controllers with that amount of money and they are awesome! For whatever it's worth, only the D-Pad really needs improvement on the Pro controller but it's not worth $195 for that. And making it click is not the improvement it needs.
Oh no. Why would you do that? I have been scouring the Internet for a way to do the opposite to my joycon. Mushy buttons all the way!
@RupeeClock - I’m right there with you, the pro controller control pad is very disappointing.
I use the SNES online controller for Tetris 99 or other games that require precision from the control pad. The Hori Switch Pad Pro (or whatever the heck it’s call) has a superior control pad when playing in handheld mode.
@Drew250 Here to second this! My wife can't stand when the Switch is anywhere near her whether she's awake or not. We need less click, not more.
Personally, I want a Pro Controller with a clicky analog stick.
That's just... way too expensive, sorry to say. I guess if you really really can't stand the base pro controller buttons and have money growing on your back then this is an option for you. It being more expensive than a standard out-of-the-box one is fine, but not over double.
Only problems with mine is the D-Pad isn't great, and oddly enough, a lot of issues with the NFC Reader. There's a 33.3% three way split on whether it scans it properly, tells me it couldn't find anything, or scans it but tells me it's not an amiibo.
Exchange it with the Wii U pro Controller, that actually hast a working dpad
Good for people that enjoy the sound. Personally I can't stand clicky controllers or keyboards, it's so annoying like being a kid and pinning playing cards to your bike tires.
Well maybe adding a precise D-Pad... just a guess. I hate this Pro Controller Fanboyism and the awful "reviews" that basically say: I love it, It is sooo comfortable, best controller ever made.... Drove me absolute crazy in the first few months of the Switch. I noticed the accidental hard drops in the Puyo Puyo Tetris demo, tested the controller and realized there is a design flaw in the D-Pad. I mean it really is the most comfortable controller I own, and it is my first choice for any game that does not need precise D-Pad inputs..., but I think a controller this expensive should have a funtioning, precise D-Pad.
Hate the left analog stick. Got 3 pro controllers and they are all squeaky. The wear out quickly.
One of the things I hate about the Xbox controller is how loud and clicky the buttons are, didn't know there was a market to make controllers louder. Price seems a bit outrageous for what you get but hopefully that find some willing buyers
Spending the price of a switch lite for 3-4 games so your controller can make annoying click noises? Riiiight..
I'll stick to my $30 GameSir controller that is basically the exact same thing for half the price of one that says Nintendo on the box and has had no problems after 2000 hours.
Um... Wullfden made a video about him doing this exact thing to his face buttons 9 months ago.
Wait, I just checked the link to the SNES version and it seems that it's just an ExtremeRate shell that can be bought for 25€ on Amazon!
Would have thought analogue triggers were more important than clicking buttons.
Best Dpad for me is the 8bitdo Sn30 pro
Also use it for pc.
@Snatcher really? The ps5 dpad sucks? That's unfortunate, because ps3 & ps4 have had my favorite dpads.
Clicking would just drive me insane.
I'd love a switch controller with a D-pad that isn't mush. Outside the D-pad it's a good feel and form factor.
@twztid13 If your gonna use it for retro games, it’s okay, but definitely nothing close to the ps4s, but for fighting games, oh boy, hope you like sore thumbs.
I must be doing something wrong. I don’t use the d-pad for anything.
As much as I enjoy the sound of mechanical keyboard keys happily clicking, that doesn't extend to a clicky gamepad waking up the wife and kids while I game in bed. Definitely not for me.
Just Add The Snes inverted X & Y buttons and perhaps a headphone jack.
No thanks, I prefer it clickless.
This is by far the worst controller I have:
Face buttons are too big and too much travel
Analogs with almost no resistance. Like...blow on it and the analog will move.
