In another IGN exclusive, Sonic Frontiers director Morio Kishimoto has revealed just how long the newest open zone entry in the series will take to finish.
It will apparently take the "average player" anywhere between 20 to 30 hours to complete the main game. If you're more of a completionist and want to tick off everything in this new open zone adventure, in IGN's words - you can expect to "easily spend double" this time to see everything the new game has to offer (so possibly 60 hours or more).
To help keep players motivated, Sonic Team has added character progression to accompany the longer play sessions. This includes a skill tree and the ability to level up the blue blur - to improve abilities and stats like his speed.
So, there you go - that's how long it'll apparently take to complete Sonic Frontiers. What are your thoughts about this? Leave a comment down below.

That's if they don't drop it first...
It’s wonderful to finally see another beefy Sonic game release.
I just hope that it doesn't have anything as ridiculous as the Korok seeds. I want a Sonic game that I can enjoy completing, like Sonic Adventure 2 Battle.
Oh boy! Am I going to have a kick 100 percent This!
I hope they show off the other worlds soon.
If you make Sonic stand majestically on rock outcroppings looking out over vast valleys for hours at a time, beating the game will take even longer!
I've never really thought of 'this game takes 60 whole hours!' as necessarily a positive thing, but regardless of playtime, I'm definitely interested; I hope the game comes out well.
Hopefully all that open space has room for the Chao Garden to make a comeback, that would increase my play time a ton.
Won't take me any hours to complete, cause it looks awful.
Sounds this game will at least feel fleshed out, which is more than I can say for Sonic Forces.
shame though 30 hours is not really that long with breath of the wild i got 120 hours out of it finding everything and beating the game
A skill tree huh.
Wow that's longer than Sonic 2006, it took me 19 hours to beat Sonic 2006 after my first run via PS3. Hopefully the good stuff happen around the 9th to 15th hours.
Meanwhile, Breath of the Wild can be completed in under half an hour.
“Gotta go fast” my hide, Sonic.
@GinMiguel I was just watching a guy play through Forces and it made me remember how basic and short the levels in the game were. I've been playing through the Xbox 360 version of Sonic Unleashed and it surprised me with how much stuff there was to do in each stage and how complex the level design was. Hopefully, the amount of care in Unleashed's levels can be replicated in Frontiers's open areas and cyberspace stages.
@KindofaBigDeal 😂 doesn't it? It looks as enjoyable as a glass of caustic soda.
Honestly I don't get what people are seeing here.
Sonic fans continue to live in hope.
Sorry, it’ll take me way longer. I’ll be too busy just running around just for the hell of it most of the time, I’m sure.
Makes a change from the 3 hours it takes to beat forces
@KindofaBigDeal in what way?
Still not a fan of lanky Sonic, but the game looks fun and I’ll prob get it, also to support the character’s continuation. He is my favorite after all. Wish they would do different skins for Sonic, such as the classic version. Heck I’d love to see his cinematic likeness in the game too.
@KayFiOS Agreed. Really get so overwhelmed with the padded optional content, but must do to get 100 percent. I know you don't have to, but, the fact it is there, makes me feel I have not done the game fully, and can't justify/moving on to play another game. OCD thing. I get very put off by games that do this. I don't mind a few extras to go back for, but, if a game is good enough, then I will replay it again and again and again again.
I LOVE Kirby and The forgotten land, but some of the 100 percent stuff worries me. Like, what if I can't get this objective complete (looking at you Tilt and Roll Mini game level 3 or certain No damage boss battles), then what is point of me trying to do all the other completion bits? It is a fine line between playing for the sake of ticking a box, and just having fun. I keep playing, so it is fun, but I can't deny it stresses me out, which it really shouldn't!
So basically generic open world check box system and skill upgrades that they all have. Still not sure how a character that is designed to be moving fast will feel if you have to slow down and explore loads of places in an open world like this. In all honesty though I lost interest in Sonic games long ago when the quality dropped and they stopped having a vision for the games. They really don't know what to do with the series so I guess this can't be any worse than the last decade or so.
I love how many people know this is an awful game despite never having played one second of it! We should get these guys doing reviews as they could review a game months before release couldn't they!
They’ve yet to put out a good trailer which is curious in likely a disastrous way. Creeping up to the plot points that show any actual danger or tension hasn’t been a great plan. Perhaps they thought the ruins and fields would present enough mystery a la BotW, but Zelda warrants that imagination on the viewers part, not Sonic the homing attack blue blur. Sega’s weird, lol
@quinnyboy58 the marketing has been off and unfulfilling. Can’t expect a majority of people to start singing Sega’s praises for the little they’ve done here
@Sensible I'd say they live on nostalgia (only having a Sega console as kids probably) and will convince themselves it's the best game of all time regardless of its quality. It's the only way to explain the sonic franchise still exists.
@NinChocolate Yeah I think it says something that they can't make 5minutes of gameplay footage look compelling.
But promising a 20-30hour main game. If what they've shown is supposed to impress players, I shudder to think what they're hiding.
@Dr_Lugae I guess they’re going with a slow build up. Maybe they feel they’ve got enough depth to draw out the marketing like that with the gameplay bits. But the message in reply is that it’s been off-brand for sonic. They could have anticipated that and made a more comprehensive trailer to cover the bases. It’s a surprising blunder
Am I taking crazy pills? Because the new gameplay video it looks much better then the ign trash, and gives us actually gameplay.
The gameplay trailer does indeed look better than the IGN videos. But they do a lot of things like target rails etc that are off camera and not stopping to explore, so it feels like the person playing knows the layout already. The IGN video is probably more realistic of what it will look like for a regular player playing the game.
I do like the look of this, reminds me of Sonic adventure where Sonic was running on a beach, being chased by a killer whale, the realistic visuals can go quite well with Sonic.
Will be getting this on the Series X though... Hoping for some awesome 4K HDR LG OLED visuals....
Sounds like adding a lot of time to it by having big empty spaces to have to run through like BotW.
25h of gameplay for the main story I suppose; will probably be much more than that when you add exploration, side stories, bit of grinding etc (as the author already said)
Hopefully will be optimized well enough to justify a Switch purchase.
I'm out of the online discourse, It looks fun and It's gonna be the first Sonic game I will actually look forward to since Sonic Advance
I've yet to see any game franchise to actually become better by going for an open world.
And i have a hunch that Sonic will not change that trend either.
@Alpha008
Every way.
@KindofaBigDeal that’s not an answer
@Alpha008
It is an answer and it is a fairly clear one. The game looks awful in every conceivable way.
MY thoughts? Cautiously optimistic as I approach EVERY 3D Sonic.
@KindofaBigDeal this is clearly some new definition of the word “awful” I was previously unaware of…
I wonder if it would look as awful if it was exactly the same, but didn’t have the stigma of sonic attached to it?
@Alpha008 It would because the game looks boring. I like in the game play video where you go through this whole complicated process of climbing a tower just to grind down a rail and end up exactly where you were. I don't get it. I watched the fight against the sentient cylinder and was thinking, no Sonic game has managed to be this boring before.
@ArcticEcho now that is an answer!
@Alpha008
The stigma of Sonic Team rather than poor old Sonic himself.
such a bizzare way to continuously learn about the game. theyre showing us tech demos, telling us sonic facts (he wont kiss humans), how long it'll take to beat. all before we get a proper trailer introducing the game first. its like theyre trying to gauge interest with anything but showing the game
@boxyguy It's because Sonic Team knows they don't have anything interesting to show.
awesome. very excited to have a Sonic game I can really sink my teeth into. my only gripe is I wish they would make the world look more like the traditional Sonic aesthetic with bright colors and surreal environments.
So it's basically a throwback to the sonic adventure games with a bit more added to it, I don't think all the challenges will be in that total, it could be more depending on how the challenges will be
@NWC but sonic is also fast so you'd expect him to complete things faster right ? Bumming around finding seeds and spending and hour climbing isn't really the style of a sonic game.
@Einherjar yeah Fallout and Grand Theft Auto were way better before they did............ and BoTW was terrible and ignored by the whole industry
What kind of meds are people here on?
@ChakraStomps GTA and Fallout didn't "become open world", they always were. And yes, BotW's open world certainly wasn't it's strongest point, as it was empty, barren and ultimately pointless as there was little incentive to actually explore it.
This is great news. I know I completed Sonic Unleashed on Xbox 360 100% with all moon and sun medals found and that took me a good 45 to 50 hours, maybe more to complete. The more I keep hearing about this game the more optimistic I get.
@johnvboy This game will look beautiful in HDR if they implement it correctly.
How is it that I'm more looking forward to the Sonic 3 movie than this?
@RubyCarbuncle,
Without a doubt, this was why I bought the Latest Lego Star Wars game for the Series X, it looks so good.
I haven't been a sonic fan since sonic 1-3 and adventure 1 and 2. But I can't wait to play this. May bring me back to the sonic series.
