As promised yesterday, The Pokémon Company has dropped a brand new trailer for the upcoming 9th generation of Pokémon games, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, along with a confirmed 18th November release date!
The trailer gives us a really good look at the upcoming pair of games, showcasing two brand new Pokémon professors (yes, two), a handful of new and returning Pokémon, and a variety of environments from craggy landscapes to snowy fields. And we now know what the two box art legendaries will look like.
We'll be sharing more on the trailer as we get more information, especially on some of those cute new creatures. But for now, let us know which version you'll be picking up!

WOWZERS. WOW. AND. ZERS. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH
Those legendries look so weird. The overworld is still choppy, but it looks like a more vibrant Arceus and that's a huge plus.
Lechonk will be in my party. 🐷
Those professors are hot stuff
Ughh… Push it back an entire year. These past 2 years have been Pokémon overload. 😪
Legendaries look pretty cool. And some of the new 'mons they showed were cute. Especially that (I assume it's an electric type) dog fighting the starters
Edit: Also, are they implying that the main story can be played multiplayer style?
Edit: So they've already posted the names. It's Pawmi and it's a mouse. Guess that should have been obvious 😂. GF loves their electric mouse/rodents
Lechonk is adorable.
Yes, voice acting is too much to ask for.
Website confirms non-linearity and free exploration.
Like the designs, not sure about leaning into memes with the naming of Smoliv and Lechonk.
I like the new Pokémon, particularly the weird “evil Budew” freak show, but I’m indifferent to the cover legendaries. Scarlet’s definitely looks better, but I love the colour purple, so Violet is my default.
A little underwhelming so far, but I have a feeling that this will be a joy to play when I finally get my grubby mitts on it.
And exploring the world with other players? Yes, please!
Surely I'm not the only one who has been anxiously waiting for Let's Go Johto... right?
They're definitely saving it for the next Gen Console... right??
Putting that aside, this looks like the best Pokemon game on Switch yet. I've only got Let's Go Eevee but this is the first time I've been tempted to get another.
It looked good, and if the whole game is multiplayer (and runs well) that would be awesome, but it still feels too soon.
Hmm... This trailer droped the ball.
They don't revealed anything, and what I dislike the most: the battle UI is back to the old ways, PLA's was soooo much better
Hoping for a Presents soon to really show what this game is about...
Koraidon and Miraidon looking pretty great.
The new professors mirror each of their designs and there appears to be a historic and futuristic theme to follow.
No one hyped for up to 4player coop play???
I like the looking of Professor Turo from Pokemon Violet.
He looked handsome with shaved beard. 😘
I will pick Pokemon Violet for sure.
@IceClimbersMain : We’ll get another Gen II remake sooner or later. I thought it would have been released by now by simply reusing assets from Let’s Go Pikachu/Eevee, but Gen II deserves so much better than that.
A Johto remake followed by the Legends treatment would be an absolute dream come true.
Lechonk looks like Pchan from Ranma 1/2
It looks amazing!
The ground textures were hit and miss
I don't dig the futuristic thing that seems linked to Violet (professor clothes and legendary with turbines?) so I'm probably getting Scarlet
Think the legendaries look pretty messy, but they're usually overdesigned so not a super huge deal.
Trailer doesn't really give a lot to go on besides that, though like the other new Pokemon. Guess multiplayer thing might be cool if you care about that but I profoundly do not.
If Lechonks evolution isnt called CHONKIER then I dont want to know!
@everynowandben Pokémon Company/Game Freak will never do voice acting in a mainline Pokémon game, only expect voice acting in spin-off games, not in mainline games.
@Silly_G
The evil budew is named Smoliv
Oh! 😯
After some investigation of Legendaries looking, I saw the Scarlet was like half motorcycle Dragon while the Violet was like half Jet Ski Dragon.
Look at their body detail carefully.
The game itself looks better, can't say the same for the Pokémon though...
Not sure if it's weird shading, design, or a mix of the two
Can’t say I’m a fan of the new legandaries. They suffer from the same issue Black and Whites did by being a bit over designed. Everything else I’m digging though.
As with Sw/Sh, I like both revealed cover legendaries. Along with the concepts they seem to represent. Now which one to pick.... 🤔
All I want to know now is will this use the old capture system only (sword/shield and previous) or also include Arceus's real-time PokeBall aiming/throwing in the wild as well...
there is something in the end of the trailler (the last animation of a pokeball)...
What if a new type is begin reveiled? crystal my guess!
Haven't really followed Pokemon in ages, but why does one of them have jet engines?
Then again, I guess we had the likes of Porygon & Magnemite back in the day...
@RR529
I was thinking the Legendaries looking was like half motorcycle (Scarlet) and half Jet Ski (Violet).
I'm pleasantly surprised with the announcement of the coop! This is going to be great. Also loving the overall vibes of the new locale and 'mon!
Boxart looks boring like SwShs.
@Classic603 : That’s such a goofy name (and I love olives).
It better evolve into an anthropomorphic pizza. It would go great with my Vanilluxe.
@Xiovanni
I have seen 480p from my Wii games. 😆
Oh god it looks… terrible. Again.
I wish I was excited but not gonna lie, if we have to fight pokemon to catch them every time, I might pass
My hype didn’t soar, but it also didn’t plummet. I actually like all the new designs pretty much and it at least doesn’t seem like a step down from Legends Arceus. Remains to be seen if the ‘throwing pokeballs’ mechanic for wild pokemon returns, but I really hope it does. I’ll be going scarlet, quite like the look of the legendary and feel nothing towards violet.
Professor Turo has massive daddy vibes and I'm here for it.
I like the more traditional vibes of the Scarlet legendary so I think I'll go for that version over the more futuristic Violet.
Switch is in dire need of a hardware upgrade.
I'm going with violet. Its legendary looks like it will have an interesting backstory
@Xiovanni And at 20 fps
I like the design of the new female professor. She looks like a cavewoman! Looks like the story is about cavemen vs. scientists. I'm not sure what this has to do with Spain, but the Hawaii-based region from Sun & Moon also had a lot of futuristic-looking characters and new Pokémon.
Let us throw balls again in the open world please. It looks like you can still sneak up on Pokemon, but let us also throw balls.
I like the co-op, but ultimately this game is a pass.
@Jamie_R Because Pokemon doesn't look that good? Do you realize there are plenty of way better looking games on the Switch.
I want to preorder the game but i don't know which one, is there any way to know each game differences or it's just too soon?
Looks fine. It's what I expect from a Pokemon game.
Mildly interested in this, but first I have to traverse Kalos, Hoenn remake, Alola, Ultra Alola, Galar and its DLC areas, Sinnoh remake and Hisui. Yeah, I have A LOT of catch-up to do.
Ok, hype established. First the professors oh my lord, I thought they couldn't top Sonia but it happened. And then when four player co op was announced my jaw dropped, that's the one thing that I always wanted in a pokemon game, exploring the world with a friend. And then the new pokemon are so cute, if lechonk doesn't become lethick I will riot
Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't this going to be the first region where we can travel with Venonat without needing the National Pokedex?
Hoenn didn't have native Venonat, Sinnoh didn't, Unova didn't, Kalos didn't, Alola didn't, and neither did Galar... so unless I am forgetting something about one of those regional Pokedexes... Venonat being in this game's regional Pokedex is big news
It looks fine. If it has the mechanics of Arceus (Catching) and a similar 'research' concept like Arceus, then I am 100% in. But I suspect it might not.
But I'll get it anyway. Not like we've got anything else coming this year
Looks really good visually and some of the character animations are definitely improved. Hoping for a deep post game to sink some hours into. And day one trading/home integration. Looking forward to it!
Sprigatito and Miraidon need to get in my life, NOW.
Well this looks like it's got a lot of features that will be great for the series IF handled well.
@Kimyonaakuma I know what you mean. It's giving me Fortnite vibes but with environmental colours toned down somewhat. There are pockets of very saturated colour yet others are quite washed out and almost cloudy looking. When the trainer throws out Chewtle it looked almost greyed in comparison to its SwSh colours, but then this isn't all final so who knows.
It’s classic Pokémon in every way but in a real time format, so no more stealth combat for the Pokémon I guess, which I’ll miss.
As for everything else, it looks, well like Pokémon, everyone else’s designs look great but I can’t get over the trainers look, I just personally don’t like it.
The trees were not up to snuff, not buying.
In all seriousness, it looks like they incorporated at least one element from Legends. There appears to be a scene where you don't have to enter battle to catch a Pokémon. Might be wrong on that but I hope not.
Wow those ground textures... Come on developers, you can do a better job.
Still not for me, at all interested. Happy for those who like how this game looks.
I mean, I am not exactly the biggest Pokemon fan in the world, but this doesn't look half bad. Definitely looks more interesting than Sword/Shield was for me. And 4 player coop depending on how it works could be very fun to play. I am a little more interested now.
Liking most of what I am seeing. 4-player co-op in a true open-world will be very fun if executed correctly.
Legendaries look a bit weird but still better than the two Sword/Shield doggos IMO.
4-player co-op in the overworld? Yes, please!
Very curious to see how the synchronized multiplayer works. Can you battle the same wild pokemon? Who gets to catch it? What about NPC battles? I hope this game doesn't continue to de-emphasize NPC battles like Legends Arceus did.
I could see things like battles, events, and spawns being locally instanced, and then you just see your friends running around the overworld after. That would probably feel underwhelming.
I'm liking the new legendaries, they remind me of Reshiram and Zekrom but more colourful and lizardlike.
I absolutely LOVE getting new Pokémon games around Thanksgiving/the holidays. There's nothing quite like that feeling of bunkering in in the cold and playing it while traveling for the holidays or whatever else. So excited for this!
@Classic603 if smoliv doesn't evolve into a fighting grass type named swoliv, I'm not catching it.
I'll be picking up the dual pack since I'm playing Scarlet & my husband will be playing Violet. I just wish our dual packs in Canada came with your European-only steelbooks, we always get so screwed in Canada on extras. I'm hoping the open world feels more "lived-in" and "alive" because Sword & Shield was a huge letdown in that area (I'm not knocking Arceus on that because it's set in the distant past and there weren't many people there to fit the game's narrative).
God it just looks awful, gamefreak proving again they don't have the chops for HD development.
@Anti-Matter I have a right to my opinion, just as you do. This world and the way the Pokémon have been modelled is just crap.
Removed - off-topic
@AzzyC
Duck?
Quaxley?
Quaxley have nothing to do with political issue.
@AzzyC Ok, usually I would agree if there was actually something to complain about. But it’s literally just a duck. Pretty much any Pokémon could be argued in some stretchy way to be commie related than that duck. It’s literally, just a duck.
@SuperCharr @SuperCharr check the headgear with the salute it does.
The first Google image of Stalin is the exact same headgear down to a T lmfao
Removed - unconstructive
@Anti-Matter Google Joesph Stalin.
The duck is based on him
@AzzyC Yeah I dunno. Most people are equating him with Donald Duck. The Stalin hat doesn’t look anything remotely close to the is thing’s head.
@BloodNinja
If you actually bothered to watch the trailer or read some of the details, this game makes some big changes compared to Sword/Shield (or Legends Arceus). A "roster update" this is not...
So looks like I'm the only one who thinks this looks like the same old game put through the recycling machine?
Glad for those who are hyped for it, but I'm completely done with expecting anything decent from Game Freak.
@BloodNinja highly disagree. There is no one who isn't dead and blind ala Ray Charles, who would actually think Quaxly represented Donald Duck more than Joesph Stalin with his hat on.
@AzzyC The duck is not based on Stalin. Nintendo wouldn’t do something like that, they’ve thankfully managed to stay the most apolitical out of modern companies. Sure Stalins hair looks vaguely similar to Quaxlys, but while Stalins hair is completely slicked back, Quaxlys is much larger and has a little swoop. Again, I’d usually be 100% on your side, but this just doesn’t make any sense.
@westman98 I watched the trailer, and no I’m not wasting time on Pokémon Roster Update 2022.
@AzzyC You’re free to think whatever crazy things you’re thinking right now lmfao
@BloodNinja
Going from linear Sword/Shield to open-world Scarlet/Violet alone makes this not a "roster update", even if literally everything else between the games were identical.
There are issues with the game that are evident (i.e. the graphics) but being a Sword/Shield update is not one of them.
@westman98 So now you can do the same things with different names attached, but in a different order. Genius-level game design, folks, they’ll never tell the difference.
@YagaMaki I agree 100%! Game Freak hasn’t made anything new in years, other than Pokémon Roster Updates!
NINJA APPROVED
I for one welcome our new Lechonk overlord.
@BloodNinja
Yep, going from linear to open-world is a big change. Nobody thinks Breath of the Wild is a Skyward Sword "roster update" (but I guess maybe you do).
Looks good so far! Hopeful so looking forward to it. The more human looking designs (and lots of dialogue) got me wishing there was actual voices though. Not a big thing but with the big change up, this was probably the time to add it to 'cutscenes'...
Ugh, why memes in their names?? it comes off as cringey and it's not going to age well. I hate localization.
And the game looks ok, think i'm gonna wait a few years to come around and play it.
Several people added to my ignore list here. I've made a rule unless you're being constructive in regards to criticism I'm not interested in what you have to say. I hate adding people to ignore but for the most part I find the Community here easy to get along with.
Graphics and animations are still so basic. Doesnt get me excited at all
@Xiovanni I think we're going to have to wait for Switch Pro for that.
@YagaMaki you're not the only one, trust me. It's sad but Pokémon games are obviously not for me anymore, been playing them since I was a teenager but I can't keep being disappointed by the constant mediocrity.
This might be the first time I buy both pokemon games.
Viva Lechonk
Okay so...if this game does away with the satisfying challenge mechanics of catching Pokemon, it's gonna be boring again, sorry. These challenges introduced a whole new layer to the gameplay, a new purpose, a satisfying constantly rewarding loop. This game looks wonderful and i hope hope hope they introduce some cool new things but if it's missing that...ahh man, idk.
Also OMG PLEASE GIVE THE GAME SOME TIME FOR FRICK'S SAKE. One more year and we could have voice acting, better resolution and performance and actually showing cutscenes when cool stuff happens, instead of Arceus' "Guys, thing is happening!!" screen fades to black - thing happened "Wow guys that thing sure happened hard!"
Oh and...difficulty. Please make the games challenging finally, oh my god. Arceus made me finally enjoy Pokemon again and i can forgive the lack of showing cool things, so-so graphics, lack of details but the fact that the game is still really easy just made me lose a lot of interest again after playing it for a while. Sure, the elite Pokemon are tough. But i'm going specifically for them a lot in order to have some challenge. The game was giving me so many items to help with survival but they lost any feeling of being special after a short while because you just get tons of them and you survive just fine without using almost any of them.
Looks better than Sword and Shield, but that's not saying much.
The Pokemon series is the FIFA of JRPGs at this point. They pump them out way too fast and they've all started blending together. The gameplay barely even changes and it's not like they're worth playing for the story either.
I'll stick to good JRPGs, thanks.
Nice, I'll be grabbing this one.
Really digging the look of the world and new Pokemon. I was already leaning on choosing Scarlet, but the box legendary definitely confirms that.
Looks better than sword and shield which I still enjoyed mindlessly playing through lol. Arceus was awesome in my opinion. First time I’ve ever come close to completing a Pokédex (stupid cranidos). Like to voice that I will also be selecting violet based on hot dad professor, that’s all it takes
@westman98 Zelda games always try to do something different with each release, have you ever played them compared to Pokémon Roster Update 2022? Poor example!
@BloodNinja
Yes, and Pokemon is doing something new too.
Transition from Scarlet/Violet to Sword/Shield is at least comparable to transition from Skyward Sword to BOTW. BOTW to BOTW2 will be the real "roster update" even as I look forward to BOTW2.
Ooooh, I love the new Legendary designs. They're like those lizards who can inflate their necks.
The distinction between versions with one being more old-world and the other being more futuristic is showing thru a lot more with these Legendaries and the professors.
It's interesting to see some of these human character designs. They look way more in line with the character designs in Pokemon Go. Sort of generic and aged-up compared to previous games.
It's always nice to see new Pokemon debut. That little orange mouse/dog looks like Kirby's new Awoofy enemy. Very cute.
@AzzyC I was about to like your post about Quaxly being a commie thinking it was a joke but you're actually serious?! lmao my goodness. You really need to calm down. You're making me want to pick Quaxly instead of Fuecoco just to name it Stalin.
@westman98 Open world has been around for 20+ years. Not exactly new!
Very weak trailer. The highlight is definitely co-op in the game, but how it will be implemented can greatly affect how much mileage that feature actually gets.
Designs are OK. Nothing terrible, nothing great.
Region environments seem very plain, with several shots looking outright ugly.
A step up for SwSh, but a long ways away from anything I'd be proud of.
@BloodNinja
Huh? When did I ever say that open world games themselves were a new, recent phenomenon?
By that metric all games are "roster updates" because video games themselves have been around since the 1950s. What a pathetic strawman...
Looking at both how exciting this game is looking and the release date at the sam time, I can only think of how this game will really be when it releases. How much content will be on it and how important it's looking for the franchise.
I see it as an important step for Pokémon and hopefully Game Freak does too.
@westman98 Hey, you're the one that brought it up, not me. If you think that open world is some new-fangled phenom that's gonna make Pokemon suddenly different, I have some snake oil I'd like to sell you!
@BloodNinja
Open world Pokemon is new, open world games in general isn't, but I'm sure you already knew that and are purposely being disingenuous.
@Bret 🤐
From a casual pokemon fan, this did absolutely nothing for me. I look forward to try Arceus one day, as that at least looked interesting, but this was was generic as it gets. Lots of people said Arceus looked bad, but it looked fine to me. This however, looks bad. I'm not sure what is different, but something made it not appealing. Pokemon Y was the last pokemon game i invested time in, so this probably wasn't meant for me, anyways.
Day 1 Purchase for me and my Son! I can't wait!!!!
