After the great success of Pokémon Legends: Arceus and its experimental first steps for the Pokémon series into semi-open-world environments (discounting the limited Wild Areas from Pokémon Sword and Shield), the question of whether Pokémon Scarlet and Violet would continue this trend or return to the more discrete and linear locales of the older games has been on the minds of fans. Now that question has been answered quite plainly by The Pokémon Company following the reveal of the new trailer for the upcoming game.
In a tweet (below) from the official Pokémon news account @PokemonNewsUK, the game has been described thusly:
In Pokémon #ScarletViolet, the first open-world RPGs in the series, you’ll experience a world you’re free to explore at your leisure—not in an order dictated by the story.
The game's official website goes into even more detail:
Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet offer an open-world experience that only the Pokémon series can deliver—one welcoming even to newcomers to the series.,
You can experience a new style of adventure, with a world that you’re free to explore at your leisure and not in an order dictated by the story. You will, of course, journey to hone your skills as a Pokémon Trainer, but many more discoveries and stories await you. Meet a variety of people and Pokémon, and adventure in the world of Pokémon the way you want to.
This clears up any lingering doubts and very explicitly says that the next Pokémon adventure will offer a decidedly more modern and non-linear experience compared to the more traditional models of earlier entries.
While there will be many fans sorry to see the older formula not making a return, for our part it's exciting to see the franchise taking some bold swings and trying something new. We're sure there'll be plenty of the old-school elements elsewhere in the game's design, but the idea of exploring a truly open Pokémon world is a thrilling one.
The trailer also revealed new characters and the new Legendary Pokémon headlining the upcoming pair of games.
Let us know below if you're excited to hear this particular detail about the upcoming mainline games.

I thought Legends Arceus was the first open world Pokemon game.
I'm hoping that in the future Game Freak might actually make an open world game that looks exciting to explore.
Glad to hear. I was going to get it regardless, because I haven't missed a pokemon game since BW, but this makes me much more excited.
Hopefully the gym leaders' teams will scale with your team if you can battle them in any order you want.
Hope this means it will be like Crystal Clear (a rom hack) in which you can battle the gyms in any order and the trainers + gyms scale based on the amount of badges one has
Pokémon Company/Game Freak you can't fool me, Pokémon Scarlet e Pokémon Violet will be a linear game like Sword/Shield, i tired of your broken and mangled promisses.
Exactly the news I was hoping to hear, but they even surpassed my expectations by letting you explore the open world in co-op as well. Only question left is whether or not gyms (or whatever equivalent they have for gyms) are in any order, but after this reveal, that's looking likely.
@KAI_MIDORIKAWA Legends Arceus isn't quite an open world, it's more of a sandbox style like Odyssey. Open world games are generally defined as letting you go anywhere you want from the start, more like BotW. Legends Arceus isn't that because you can't go to say, Mt. Coronet from the start, you have to progress through the game to unlock it.
I hope I can customize my looking like the boy with bandana instead of wearing big hat.
Can't wait to start exploring!!!
This is great news and I'm going to completely ignore all negativity on Pokèmon Articles from now on. Idc what anyone here says but these games look lovely.
I'm quite certain this is going to please everyone.
@KAI_MIDORIKAWA open area sandbox.
@abbyhitter seems like it
So no gyms or elite 4? Well there's my hype gone
@gcunit HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. This is the internet, there will already be someone offended by this news. "They don't make them like they used to anymore"
@UltimateOtaku91 It can be an open world game and still have those things...
@UltimateOtaku91 literally nobody said that.
Hmmm they hadn't mention anything about the new region, hopefully we can travel freely through each region.
But don't worry we're newcomer friendly!!!!
Sounds like:
Don't worry this will be really easy and we'll have neon signs showing you where to go ALL THE Time!
In really curious how this will turn out!!
Looks gorgeous, and the inspiration is an awesome part of the world!
@Dilly-Mick @Kiz3000 would be difficult to do so in an open world game where you can go where you want straight away, how would the levels of the gyms work and needing the types to defeat those gyms, for example going to the ice area without going to an area with fire/fighting types first, would be easier for them to not include gyms but we shall see hopefully they are still included
Whilst I enjoyed legends arceus and I don't mind how the battles and catching mechanics work, I did find it a bit bland.
So hopefully these new games add, gyms, loads of trainers to battle, routes and multiple towns dotted around the map like breath of the wild.
Also hoping they have some multiplayer activity like sword/shield raids to keep people playing after the story.
Speedruns for this game are about to go CRAZY.
@UltimateOtaku91
You can still soft-gate portions of the world, even if it's open-world. Breath of the Wild does this. You can technically head straight for the icy mountains, but you'll have a hard time of it if you don't first acquire a fire sword, learn how to cook up cold-resisting potions, or find the right armor. In something like Witcher 3, you can technically take on quests far above your level, but you'll also get clobbered immediately, so you probably should reserve those for later. And so on.
@UltimateOtaku91 plenty of games have the ability to scale creatures to level. I mean sword and shield did, after you beat the game most were level 60 in the wild area.
They even showed arenas in the trailer.
4 player coop will be awesome, this is the game many wanted for years.
more open than Arceus then, nice
@Beaucine yeah you're right so hopefully gyms are included, I will still get it if not but I like goals to work towards like previous games, if I knows there's a water gym coming up I'd train and catch anti type pokemon, I just don't want to to be go around filling a pokedex and nothing else like arceus pretty much was, though would still be nice if these new games added the pokedex tasks arceus had
Why would the game need voice acting? It's still something very new and barely used at all, right?
@KAI_MIDORIKAWA It's not a true open world, as the area's aren't interconnected.
@UltimateOtaku91 I can think of several solutions. They can create a "natural" path that subliminally leads players to gyms in a certain order durring their fist playthrough. Or they can make the areas arround certain gyms harder to clear so you have to be committed to reach them early on. Both are common design phelosephies for open-world games. Finally, whether or not GF opts for either choice, pokémon levels and trainer team compositions can scale based on how many badges you have. You'd still know which gyms (or gym equivalant) are in which towns and you can hunt counters accordingly
This is going to be awesome.. I'm not going to lie, when I watched the newest trailer I cringed at the dialogue for "This is your first Pokémon battle" and I was like.. HOW DARE YOU. But now that I see I can take care of that bit and then just go off on my own, i'll be very happy to explore at my own pace.
@KAI_MIDORIKAWA not fully open world open maps but still limited by those maps. This is taking what they did there and blowing it out im thinking
@Beaucine not to mention, gerudo town which you can't enter at all without passing a brief story questline first
@UltimateOtaku91 why assume that? They haven’t said that and this is a mainline game only sun/moon failed to have gyms
@Williamfuchs420 and legends which is also a "core series" game, accirding to GF.
God I wish they'll let us catch pokemons like in PLA, please.
@Gunit1099 I'm sure they'll keep the back-strike mechanic for the battles, but for catching, yeah I think that's going back to basics.
@Z-Core yeah the catching mechanic of Arceus was pretty much what brought me back into the series, I don't think I can look back now.
@Dilly-Mick think that statement was a mistranslation just based on there actions if Legends was a mainline game they wouldn’t be releasing Another mainline game less then a year after it. It is pretty clear that was there “test” game to play around with the gameplay and graphical presentation and test audience reaction before adapting those concepts into the mainline series. Now the popularity and sales of Legends might end up turning it into its own regular sub series of games alongside the mainline and remakes. There are some cool ways future legends games could go maybe even further back in time granted they would need to figure out a different method of capture with pokeballs not being a thing yet.
I am hoping that there is gym scaling in the game (this includes adding or removing pokemon also from the team). This was hinted in Pokemon Origins.
If this is the case then that is a fantastic edition to the series and will add an extra bit of replay value to the series.
I do wonder how being open world will impact the gyms.
....Yeah I'm done with the series...Legends was even more boring than Sword/Shield. I'm not wasting any more money here.
Hopefully they don’t axe gyms. Sword/Shield bringing them back was great and should stay back
Clearly a botw ripoff
@Pat_trick it's a big budget game that doesn't get many sales so they'd have to make the game more expensive to cover the costs of hiring voice actors
@Giancarlothomaz How can you so confidently make this claim? We barely know anything about the games.
@KAI_MIDORIKAWA
It is still zones you choose between, large open zones, but not one total world
Pokémon of the Wild!
I can't wait to explore the world, though the graphics, while showing a lot of quality effects, are clearly compromised at the same time. This game will really push the console it's running.
@Bret Pokémon Company/Game Freak lied about cutting half of the Pokémon to give us better animations during gen 8, why would i believe on them now?
@Would_you_kindly Pokémon is the largest media franchise of the world, they have budget to hire voice actors in the game, but they priorize voice acting in the spin-off games, not the mainline games
@Pat_trick Pokémon Company/Game Freak will never do voice acting in a mainline Pokémon game, they priorize voice acting in spin-off games, don't expect voice acting in a mainline Pokémon game.
@Giancarlothomaz I know , my comment was sarcastic because the budget for Pokémon games is pretty low but they charge the same as most triple AAA games & they obviously sell really well so they're raking in the money
@Williamfuchs420 remakes are mainline games too...
It realy isn't up to us to decide what constitutes as a mainline game. If gamefreak makes a game and calls it part of the core series then that's what it is.
@Dilly-Mick thats not what i meant. I meant the generation primary game this generation was sw/sh then we got the remake and a possible beginning to a legends series. There all mainline games if you define that as a game that was the primary release at the time they have a rotation that are all given primary attention and treated as there main game hoping they add legends to the rotation now.
It would be smart to do. They have only max 5 more remakes before they will probably start remaking remakes. And some of those like sun moon and ultra really dont need remade there not that old but by the time they get there maybe. Add in a new legends series to extend development time for the generation primary game and for future remakes would be useful and allow a yearly release…
I'm one of the last fans of traditional linear games. I'm terrible to find my way so i get lost if i don't know where exact to go next. Now it will get more confusing! I would prefere if they just upgrade the difficulty in battles and make some ohter gameplay twists
@Pat_trick I mean, did you see Piers' "performance" before his gym fight? Watching him just mouthing words while the rest of his band plays is just... cringe-worthy. I don't usually care either way, but that sequence was just a new level of awkward.
@Pip_Pipston Completely agree. I don't think voice acting is necessary in every game, but if you're gonna have cutscenes and 3D graphics I think voice acting is a must.
@RubyCarbuncle I completely agree! I'm so hyped for full open-world co-op, which is something I've wished for for literally decades!
@Ulysses 👍
@Giancarlothomaz
More fool you, Legends Arceus which this clearly takes inspiration from, is an incredible game.
