We've got the full sales data for the month of May in Japan and it was another strong performance for the Nintendo Switch, surprising absolutely no one.
Nintendo Switch Sports took the top spot in terms of game sales, shifting almost 420,000 units after its launch on April 29th. This performance puts the game just behind its 2006 sibling Wii Sports at 553,000 units, which if you recall wasn't bundled with the Wii console in Japan.
Kirby and the Forgotten Land, meanwhile, slipped down into second place, having sold a respectable 117,000 units during May. Previously, the game had spent both March and April at the top of the charts.
Overall, more than 1.6 million games were sold in the region during May, of which 86.6% were on the Switch. An impressive statistic, to be sure, and one that firmly puts Nintendo as the top publisher during May in terms of value and volume, with Konami in second place.
Here's a look at the top ten games for May in Japan:
Position | Game |
---|---|
1 | Nintendo Switch Sports |
2 | Kirby and the Forgotten Land |
3 | eBaseball Powerful Pro Yakyu 2022 |
4 | Mario Kart 8 Deluxe |

We're going to go out on a limb, but we suspect June's figures will be fairly similar, with Mario Strikers: Battle League coming out on top this time around after its recent launch on June 10th - you heard it here first!
What do you think of the latest sales figures for Japan? Any surprises here? Share your thoughts with a comment below.

Yeah but I dont count Wii Sports as it came with the console, just like I dont count Tetris for Gameboy and Super Mario World for the SNES.
So Switch Sports is doing really well in my mind.
And in the US too. Unit and Dollar sales! Incredible
@Bunkerneath
Wii Sports wasn't a pack in game in Japan though
@Bunkerneath Tetris also wasn't bundle with Game Boy in Japan. The same goes for Super Mario World for Super Famicom. All those games were bundle in the west but not in Japan and this is a Japanese chart.
I’m not surprised by any of these games on the list.
Kirby is selling well for a surprisingly long time. It is still in the UK charts as well. I should really give it a go....
@Jey887 It's one of the best games for the system IMO.
@Jey887
I’ve played my fair share of kirby games and this one is definitely a highlight. Highly recommend it!
@TheMelodiusRose i am not one of those blind switch fans who buy a game just because it has a mario or kirby name attached to it i buy a game because the reviews says it is a very good game..
Mario Strikers isn't all that big in Japan so I wouldn't count on Battle League topping the charts when it launches.
@kerplunk @Takoda Yep, i'm definitely going to pick it up at somepoint in the future. So many games to get through first though...
@TheMelodiusRose people play casual games like this not because you can sink 200 hours of new things to do, but because they enjoy the relaxing atmosphere of playing bowling or whatever. Wii Sports didn’t have a lot of content either if we want to compare it to other video games in general, but people bought those in the end too
"Is anyone surprised?"
Probably the usual Sony fanboys in perpetual denial.
Since Sony pulled the plug on the Vita's life support, Nintendo's had a clear run at the Japanese gaming market so no surprise here!
BTW, who is STILL buying Minecraft?
