Update: When someone says "soon", we expect maybe a couple of days, but just over an hour ago, the devs announced on Twitter that Switch owners don't need to wait much longer, and that the update is ready to download!
Also, Mark DeCarlo — the voice for the upcoming DLC fighter Hugh Neutron — revealed that he will be reprising the role of the beloved character when he arrives in Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl later this year!
Original article: Nickelodeon fans are likely to be delighted by today's announcement from Ludosity and Fair Play Labs. The developers behind Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl have dropped a brand new update for their cartoon brawler which brings in new items to the game, but most importantly, voice acting!
While we enjoyed our time with the game back when we reviewed it, the lack of voice-acting was something we pointed out. Luckily, art director Diego Hernández confirmed last December that it was on the way, and now we can finally experience it! Well, except if you're a Switch owner, right now.
Currently, while the new patch is available on other consoles and PC, the update isn't live on the Switch right now. So we'll have to wait a little bit longer to experience the game as we've always dreamt of.
For now, we can share the confirmed cast list for the game, which features many iconic returning voices for the roster:
By unanimous request, Brawler voiceovers are here! Enjoy the quips and grunts of your favorite brawlers as you play!
- Jim Cummings: Shredder / CatDog (Cat)
- Tom Kenny: SpongeBob / CatDog (Dog)
- Bill Fagerbakke: Patrick

- David Kaufman: Danny
- Phantom Janice Kawaye: Jenny
To borrow the words from one of the characters here: smashing! We can't wait.
Of course, while the voices are easily the most exciting part of the update, a ton of new items and balance updates have also been added. We've included all of the patch notes here for you so you know what you're getting when the update goes live on Switch:

I think this game should’ve had this at launch, I think by now people have moved on
Honestly this game should be free to play too most people have moved on from it and returned to either smash, rivals, multiversus or other alternatives and activity has for this game has died down heavily. It switching to free to play is a great way to get more people to try it out.
@OnlyItsMeReid It likely wasn't possible with the initial budget for the game when it was being developed. I do agree that it's likely too late now, I see more interest in Multiversus honestly.
I have to appreciate their time and effort of getting the classic voice actor, Joe Biden, to voice act CatDog. And to anyone complaining about the delay, sometimes masterpieces take time, so please be thankful. 😒
For the people still complaining that they should have added this since launch, they had a small budget, they weren't expecting the game to go viral and have so much hype, it probably sold more than they estimated, and they got a lot of constructive criticism about things that they should improve, that's why they didn't have voices at launch.
I'm surprised they decided to have actual new voices instead of just reusing old recordings.
What they need now is a sequel with a much bigger budget than the original, while also recycling almost everything from the first game.
Really? No Jessie Flower??? Why? She can still do the Toph voice and sounds exactly the same that sucks 😢
Also, never knew this until now, but the fact that the person who voices Shredder (Jim Cummings), one of the most menacing cartoon villains, is also the voice of bloody Winnie the Pooh is absolutely hilarious to me.
I'm happy for Jim Cummings doing Shredder voice he can really do voice acting seeing him many various roles. I am happy for voice update it is needed.
This game is really solid and they will keep polishing it!
I think switching to free to play would be a death knell at this point, it would burn those that bought in and very few would jump on. I think this game will only have a competitive scene of the very dedicated but is otherwise dead
Might give this a go now, you can usually pick it up cheap
I always avoid free to play titles, what with all the tricks that goes with it.
That being said, this game is not free to play thank god
Very nice! This game is cheaper than Smash bros. I don´t like this kind of fighting game very much. But..if i buy one...probably i´ll buy this one.
Yayyyyy! Better late than ever! I'm still very much enjoying the game. I honestly don't think I've even touched Smash since it released. Now that I know Smash isn't getting any more content, I kinda lost the incentive to play it regularly.
Jenny has already become my main--I absolutely adore her! Here's hoping this game has a long life ahead of itself. I just worry rhe business model won't be feasible. People already complained the base game was too expensive, and the DLC is $5 per character. It basically costs as much as Smash with a fraction of the content, meanwhile Multiversus is going the free-to-play route. Unfortunately, I think that will be the game that has more longevity.
But hey, I'll keep supporting NASB as long as they keep adding content. I still wanna see characters like Timmy Turner, Jimmy Neutron, Prince Zuko, and El Tigre make the cut.
I'll probably get this game once Rocko is added.
Bought the game on discount a few weeks ago and have really been enjoying it. It was definitely weird when I realized there were no items, so good on them for listening to feedback! And voice acting will be great as well.
@Fizza The original voice of Shredded was James Avery, mostly known as Uncle Phil, but now he is dead.
To give them credit, they got most of the actual voice actors, not soundalikes so fair dos to them. I have this coming via Boomerang Rentals so it's something to look forward to.
I noticed they're included items now. Which sounds cool but didn't datamines reveal they were part-programmed in the game? I guess it's good they revisited the idea and kept the promise of free updates
Anyway, trivia time: this is not the first platform fighter Abby Trott has lent her voice to. Can you name the other two and in which role?
This is becoming a Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid style comeback.
So many people on YouTube has been bemoaning the lack of voice acting to the point that they're holding off on purchase till then. So this along with items is much needed.
Hopefully cross-play along with other fun tidbits like more single player modes approaches quickly as well.
Good on ya, Ludocity.
Edit: YOWZA! Someone at Nick or either Ludocity must've given the voice actors a huge paycheck or something because there's a bunch of voice lines that isn't just deliver simple attack grunts and lines and win quotes.
Let's just say that you need to hop on an arcade ladder or hop on training mode and test the items feature.
@martynstuff
(Looks up the answer.)
No. Freaking. Way.
Tim Curry not back for Nigel Thornberry is an automate "No" for me.
I might actually get this game, now.
People are saying it’s too late, but I think not, it’s going to be free on ps plus this month, and it has went on big sales a good few times.
When it comes to ps plus, should had it been from the start? Yes but nick didn’t give them the budget for it, and now they have it. I’m getting back into it! I’m so happy!
@kal_el_07241 Tim Curry can no longer voice Nigel due to a stroke.
Update is out now! Just checked!
Ok. Add Asami and I’m in.
@Captain_Toad Oh no.... I had no idea he had a stroke. I wish nothing but the best for him and his loved ones. Thanks for shedding light on that.
Many classic voice actors couldn't come back thanks to reasons like growing up, retirement or death:
James Avery, voice of Shredder: Dead
Christine Cavanaugh, voice of Oblina: Dead
Tim Curry, voice of Nigel: Had a stroke and retired
Jessie Flower, voice of Toph: Grew up
Zack Tyler, voice of Aang: Grew up
Renae Jacobs, voice of April: Retired
Lorenzo Music, voice of Garfield: Dead
John Kricfalusi, show's creator and voice of Ren: Unhirable thanks to anger issues and sexual harassment
Gary Owens, voice of Powdered Toast Man: Dead
Reptar and Lincoln Loud: Had multiple voices in the show
i stole this : )
Original voice actor reprising role:
Cat, Dog, Shredder, Spongebob, Patrick, Sandy, Zim, Korra, Lucy Loud, Helga, Michelangelo, Leonardo, Ren & Stimpy, Danny Phantom, Jenny
Not original, but not first time playing role:
Lincoln Loud, Garfield
Newly cast:
Oblina, Nigel Thornberry, Toph, Aang, Reptar (who cares lol), April O'Neil, Powdered Toast Man
Honestly, overall this is super impressive for voices dating back as far as 1987.
@victordamazio On my list, I included anyone who voiced the character on the original show at any point, so that includes Billy West as Ren (Kricfalusi was fired after season 2 of the original run, Billy West took over from there) and Jim Cummings as Shredder (who was voiced by 5 different people in the original run!)
This is extremely cool. I love when developers listen and respond to feedback like this. And they have some seriously deep cuts in here, it's gonna be great to hear some of those classic voices reprised! I'm getting this one free on PS Plus and if the gameplay clicks for me, I'll probably jump on the DLC as well.
too little, too late
should have used the initial hype with this, the player base would have been bigger
ppl already moved on to the next games, the established small playerbase will be hella happy, but thats it
Alright nice! 👍
Well...that was fast!
I strongly dislike the replacement voices for Aang and Toph, though. I don't know why they couldn't have just used voice samples from the show.
@Bret @victordamazio I was looking up for this info. Thank you very much for the lists
@Fizza Pick a cartoon character from the last 35 years at random, and there's a good chance Cummings voiced them. He's also been the voice of Tigger and Big Bad Pete for decades, he voiced Darkwing Duck, he was Robotnik on SatAM...
@iLikeUrAttitude it's on ps plus this month so it's not far off lol
@kal_el_07241 is it the guy from scary movie that voices him
@victordamazio Lorenzo Music as Garfield and James Avery as Shredder are the voices I'll miss most...
So did they actually get ANYONE to do the original voices? Skimming the comments above looks like a bunch were replaced. I know Zims voice actor said in a Twitch stream Nick hadn't even reached out to him at all, but that was awhile ago.
In any case this game needs to go f2p if it wants to even have a few people still playing. I know I'd at least try it then since I could play online (N$O isn't ever getting a renewal from me). If not, nothing is lost since I still never finished all of Smash Ultimates single player.
Well I’ve got to give them an A for effort. I still haven’t tried this out yet but all the post content they’ve added has made me want to give it a go. The voice work and items should greatly improve this game. I still think it’ll be a brief one for me but maybe there’s even more in store.
@Not_Soos I actually think Aang and Tophs actors sound really good!
Also thought we would have had to wait longer for switch, I guess not!
Tbh this is something the game should had came with from the get-go.
Good to see greats like Jim Cummings and Billy West back in the fold of voicing their Nick characters and Frank Welker is always welcome in anything. While it's a shame but understandable that Tim Curry can't reprise Nigel in his condtion, Jim Meskimen is a pretty good choice to pass the torch to.
This comment section is proof nobody understands budget haha. Otherwise I'm pretty happy they got a lot of the original voice actors, and the replacements will probably be fine
Abby Trott is one of those voice actors I end up seeing in a lot of great games and anime
Just in time as its free with ps plus tomorrow
I don't play this, just not into brawlers, but getting Janet Varney in the game is making me reconsider it.
Perfect timing for PlayStation plus subscribers since they get the game "free" tomorrow, little incentive for anyone else.
Considering Playstation Plus is getting the Nickelodeon All Star Brawl very soon, I will be playing that particular game on there. I am really happy voice acting was included, I was originally going to give the game a hard pass without voices to make the characters actually interesting to use.
Too late?
(Need more text)
@SteamEngenius Yes actually! Only six of the characters are voiced by completely different voice actors. The other 17 are voiced by either their original voice actors or voice actors who are not the original voices but have at one point assumed the role as that character in other forms of media
...What are the items like? >.>
YESSSSSSSS!!!!!!! HELL YEAH
Very nice, they finally did it. I can't be the only one who was waiting for this before picking it up. I'm excited.
@SteamEngenius look at mine and Victor's comments. Most of the actors that were replaced were because they can't do the voices any more.
@HotGoomba
"I have to appreciate their time and effort of getting the classic voice actor, Joe Biden, to voice act CatDog. And to anyone complaining about the delay, sometimes masterpieces take time, so please be thankful."
"Joe Biden"?
@Mario500 Joe Biden.
@HotGoombs
"Joe Biden."
???
@SteamEngenius Most of the voice actors that are still alive and working came back, but many of them were replaced due to retirement, their voices changing, or death.
Also, there are cases where the original voice actor was already replaced in the cartoons, Jim Cummings done the voice of Shredder when James Avery was alive but not available, Frank Welker is the main voice of Garfield since 2007, and Billy West took over the voice of Ren when the creator John K. was fired.
Really applaud the devs supporting this game and adding so much unexpected content over time. I've played it a bit and think that voices and items will really add to it. Looking forward to sinking my teeth into it some more!
