Getting comfy? Our weekly Japanese charts update certainly is. For the second week in a row, it's an all-Switch Top Ten with Nintendo Switch Sports still comfortably at the top of the charts during the week of 23rd May - 29th May.
It's going to be a sticker, this one, and Switch Sports now surpassed the 400,000 sales mark, selling another 32,321 units. Kirby and the Forgotten Land has managed to leapfrog back into second place with a further 12,720 sales.
There's only one new entry into the top ten this week with Idea Factory's otome Radiant Tale, which debuts in fourth with a pretty respectable 7,311 sales.
Here's the list in full:
- [NSW] Nintendo Switch Sports (Nintendo, 04/29/22) – 32,321 (419,522)
- [NSW] Kirby and the Forgotten Land (Nintendo, 03/25/22) – 12,720 (736,287)
- [NSW] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Nintendo, 04/28/17) – 9,938 (4,652,766)
- [NSW] Radiant Tale (Idea Factory, 05/26/22) – 7,311 (New)
- [NSW] Minecraft (Microsoft, 06/21/18) – 7,262 (2,655,548)
- [NSW] eBASEBALL Powerful Pro Baseball 2022 (Konami, 04/21/22) – 5,693 (177,208)
- [NSW] Ring Fit Adventure (Nintendo, 10/18/19) – 5,217 (3,162,189)
- [NSW] Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Nintendo, 12/07/18) – 5,052 (4,889,720)
- [NSW] Taiko Risshiden V DX (Koei Tecmo, 05/19/22) – 4,198 (25,908)
- [NSW] Mario Party Superstars (Nintendo, 10/29/21) – 3,434 (971,212)
The hardware sales paint a very familiar picture, too. The Switch OLED and original models retain the top two spots, and the PlayStation 5 stays comfortably in third ahead of the Switch Lite. There are ongoing stock issues for next-generation consoles, but the PS5 is hanging in there, and with tonight's State of Play, perhaps there will be even more reason for people to pick up Sony's console.
- Switch OLED Model – 30,702 (1,829,023)
- Switch – 21,612 (18,327,035)
- PlayStation 5 – 13,495 (1,411,378)
- Switch Lite – 8,563 (4,734,788)
- Xbox Series S – 1,654 (113,227)
- PlayStation 5 Digital Edition – 1,335 (238,567)
- Xbox Series X – 887 (101,322)
- New 2DS LL (including 2DS) – 164 (1,186,379)
- PlayStation 4 – 16 (7,819,584)
As always, let us know what you think of the figures in the comments.

Good the PS5 has staying power at least that...
Good to see the Oled model doing so well and rightly too, playing Kirby and the Forgotten Land certainly pushes those vibrant colours on the Oled screen. I also recently bought an Oled TV last year but I’d say the colours seem more vibrant on the Switch
I wonder, did Pokemon Legends sales die down cause of Violet and Scarlets announcement?
Switch Sports is hanging in there. I like that Nintendo takes these kinds of chances.
Game Builder Garage is nearing its one year anniversary (the 11th). I hope NL does a retrospective article on it (@AlanaHagues). 😊
I did make a game in GBG:
Astro Joust: G-004-6LN-C5Y
It is neat to see the crazy reproductions made by super users, but I prefer games made by regular users (of course, I am biased 😉).
@iLikeUrAttitude - Moreso willing to bet Legends had the best "spin-off" sales of any Pokémon game. But like previous ones, they usually don't have great legs after that.
There are ongoing stock issues for next-generation consoles, but the PS5 is hanging in there, and with tonight's State of Play, perhaps there will be even more reason for people to pick up Sony's console.
Or any at all amirite?
laughs in Nintendrone
It always brings a smile to my face to see a full switch top ten.😁
The Nintendomination of Japan continues.
60K Switches is very good for this time of year.
Xbox has sold 200k units. That's impressive, as crazy as that sounds.
Switch outselling the PS5 almost 5:1.
If I were Sony I'd be breaking out those smaller ritual swords for upper management.
@BiscuitCrumbsInMyBed does the old switch look different than the OLED switch on an OLED tv?
I'm tv hunting soon and was considering it. Thanks
@Sonos Yes, very much so, only in vibrancy in colour, it’s a LG 4K Oled, I’m not sure if it makes the picture quality higher by upscaling it as I’m not that massively tech savvy, but overall the the colours are lovely. I think I need to change my TV settings to be more vibrant as I have it set to filmmaker mode which is slightly more darker. But even without gaming, the picture quality is lovely and the colours are very rich
Seem the Switch hype is slowing down now since everyone are just enjoying Kirby for now. July would be a very good month for Switch since Xenoblade Chronicles 3 and Live-A-Live would own that month.
Nintendo Switch Sports still killing it.
PS5 domination over the Switch Lite, the number 2 console in this chart, continues!
I just bought kirby this week. I intended to test it out by playing the first level and before I knew it I was in World 3 and it was past midnight.
So I wonder what are Japanese peoples playing on PS5 currently if they bought the machine ?
I mean, there are some kids games on PS5 as well in Japanese version and they are still same interesting games as Switch games.
@Anti-Matter Elden Ring? But you make a good point. No single game in large enough numbers to make the top 10.
@Tandy255
Well, if peoples bought the games just because they are popular currently, I think it wasn't really good decision.
I personally pick games that I thought interesting for me and matched with my personality, oftenly they are unpopular / obscure games since I don't like with certain popular games.
“Led” not “lead”
Please don’t encourage poor spelling.
@Sonos No, the original and OLED model will look identical on your TV screen.
@SwitchForce I wouldn't mind seeing Sony choke
@Aurumonado that game is way better than I think anyone expected.
@Li_Bae Did you know that lead rhymes with read, and read rhymes with lead, but lead does not rhyme with lead, and read does not rhyme with read? Gotta love English.
@NotoriousWhiz That was way more fascinating then I thought it was going to be. I had to read it a few times to find out what was happening. Very cool.
@Matty1988 their is no reason at all to own a useless ps5. Street Fighter 6, Resident Evil 4 Remake, etc. Are all coming to Xbox Series X/S. Spider-Man Remake is Coming to PC, which makes ps4 and ps5 obsolete for Spider-Man Fans who don't want to be forced to find a console almost impossible to find or outdated like the ps4.
The state of play just gave my final verdict not to waste money on the ps5.
@IronMan30 ps5 is a joke period.
@NintendoEternity I casually check to find one now and then to watch Twin Peaks on Blu Ray - but when I can't easily find one I cannot be bothered.
Lost sales on software and my Lynch/Miyazaki obsession continue.
I remember last gen when people were telling Sony they were losing Japan as customers and Sony basically flipped them off. Now that AAA Western development is completely stagnated and customers are increasingly bored...Whoops-see-Daisy
@NintendoEternity
I want to get PS5 machine someday, for playing kids games such as Paw Patrol Grand Prix, Kao the Kangaroo, Potion Permit, Smurfs Mission Vileaf, Instant Sports Plus, etc.
I found some good kids games on PS5 I can play. 🙂
@NintendoEternity it's an okay console, tbh. Not for me, but yeah...
@Anti-Matter but why not on Nintendo Switch? Those Games are for Switch.
@IronMan30 I've played my Sister's husband ps5. It's really no different than a ps4 pro. Honestly I think sony rushed it
@NintendoEternity
I have sorted which 3rd party kids games I will pick the Switch version and which is for PS4 / PS5 version and which games I will double dip (bought both Switch & PlayStation version).
Since I like to collect a lot of different game consoles, I have to make sure my PS4 & PS5 games still get a lot of 3rd party kids games as I can only depend on 3rd party games for PlayStation machines.
From my games list on my book, I have registered almost 80 PS4 games and 20 PS5 games, thanks to 3rd party multi console games. If I give them all to Switch version, I will unable to build my PS4 & PS5 games library.
For Switch games, it has some 3rd party exclusives on it such as Geminose, Waku Waku Sweets, etc so their games helped me to increase my Switch games library. Even I have decided to give more 3rd party multi console kids games for my PS4 / PS5, but I still have more games on Switch than PS4 / PS5 as my Switch games are consist some 1st party + 3rd party exclusives + a few 3rd party multi consoles.
From aesthetic aspect, I personally really like the blue color box of PS4 box with Blue banner on top than the Switch box cover design with red spine and generic fonts. PS5 cover design looked exactly same as PS4 with White banner and I like both PS4 & PS5 cover box design.
@Anti-Matter cool
Hey @AlanaHagues no UK charts this week? I'm guessing the jubilee (🙄) is the cause of their absence?
@Otoemetry I'm assuming so! All we've been told is that the weekly data has been delayed. As soon as we get the info, we'll get the charts up
@AlanaHagues thank you for your reply, and your diligence!
