In case you missed it, Nintendo recently updated its official game page for Splatoon 3 - revealing the third entry will support cloud saves. The catch is it seems cloud saves will only be compatible with offline play data.
Here's the full footnote from Nintendo's game page, which also mentions how membership is required to access additional features online features:
Save Data Cloud compatible with offline play data only.
Nintendo Switch Online membership (sold separately) and Nintendo Account required for online features. Not available in all countries. Internet access required for online features. Terms apply. nintendo.com/switch-online
It's worth noting Splatoon 2 did not include cloud save support, and while Splatoon 3 won't include additional cloud support for the game's online features this is at least a step in the right direction.
At this stage, it's still unknown how exactly data will be saved for the online components of Splatoon 3.
If we hear anything else on this subject, we'll let you know.

It’s a shame it won’t be online. I saw that it was compatible with cloud saves on the page, but assumed it would work for online data. Still, might come in an update later on.
I hope.
There is still no reason for there not to be online cloud saves.
I'm not 100% sure but I'd expect most of the online information for users to be stored on their servers. Hopefully this is true so it doesn't matter which system you're on, you just need to be logged into your account.
How can cloud saves be offline? Unless the cloud servers are offline, then of course, the cloud saves are also offline. 😆
I'm wondering how this would work. So if you want to play on another Switch only your online stats, rank and whatnot, won't transfer over? I consider gear and story as offline data so if it's just stats I'm fine with this. I love playing ranked but I'm not that attached to it to complain. Though I'm more concerned for my gear.
i survived without cloud saves in splatoon 2, but just hearing how other companies manage their online games fine with cloud saves makes this decision dumb. just another half step in nintendo attempt to figure out online
I guess this is explains why all my progress was gone when I booted up Splatoon 2 the other week for the first time since getting an OLED Switch.
Have they announced yet if you can look up and down on the right analogue stick when using gyro aiming?
@boxyguy I like to see it as a somewhat positive thing and for them taking that half-step in the right direction.
That being said: Finally! Yes, this is an ok start, but you have to now make it so it's also online that gets cloud saves! Also, ditch your awful online servers and boost them to dedicated servers for a game such as Splatoon 3.
Sucks. How can we cheat our rank online without hacking the console. Cloud saves gives us the ability to load up a older backup after we lose a couple of rank games online.

Honestly, if this means you can still save all your gear and whatnot, I'm totally fine with this. It's just a question of, do they see obtained equipment as online or offline?
I would say offline, because you can in fact change your loadout if your system is offline. You just can't play online then (obviously), so your rank and all that would be what's considered online.
At least, that makes the most sense to me.
how disappointing
With all the success and money Nintendo have made over the years, you would think they could manage this simple task of having all cloud saves and cutting any confusion.
Sometimes so backward.
Would gear count as offline play or online play? You upgrade them with the exp and chunks you get through online play, but you still own them offline.
I hope this means that rank, level and some other values from online play are just tied to your Nintendo Account and the other stuff is cloud saves. If it only is cloud saves for the story mode I don't see much of a difference from before.
@Dezzy70 Both Sony (Limited storage) and Nintendo charges money for cloud saves.
On Xbox you have unlimited cloud save storage 100% for free without any sub.
@MichaelP
Not sure if that was a joke or not, but I'll answer it anyways. Any singleplayer content and other content accessible offline is going to be saved onto the cloud.
@BulkSlash
I don't know why...but I feel like that sort of restriction actually makes gyro aiming a lot more accurate. I tried using gyro aiming in games like Fortnite and Doom, but got nowhere near as accurate as Splatoon.
that's fine cause single player is the main point of Splatoon anyway
I guess it makes sense but jesus does this sound like 2 steps forward, one step back.
@ModdedInkling
That’s interesting, maybe I use gyro differently from others? I like to have the right analogue stick on maximum sensitivity (to the point where I can’t really aim accurately with it) and I use it to just point in the general direction of what I’m aiming at and then use gyro to fine tune the aim (I also have gyro on maximum sensitivity but I find it so accurate that it’s never hard to aim with).
IIRC the developers said they prevent up/down on the right stick to avoid players getting confused between the two or something, but I’m so used to it from games like Doom Eternal that I’m always trying to use it in Splatoon even though it does nothing. 😩 Hopefully they will allow its use in the sequel, but they should definitely make it optional so it’s not forced on players who don’t want it.
i lost all my splatoon data when i moved over to OLED. So annoyed. If they HAVE to do it like this, please have a feature like Animal Crossing where you have to call Nintendo Support for a code to recover somewhat recent data, i’ll rather lose a couple levels then having to start all over and lose 4/5 years of progress.
@BulkSlash When you upgrade to an oled, only switch user profiles linked to nintendo accounts can transfer game save data to a new console. You have to have both consoles on hand to do a system transfer. I transferred my splatoon 2 data to my new oled in december.
@ModdedInkling
It was a half-joke, because originally the headline was something like "Splatoon 3 Will Support Offline Cloud Saves ...". 🙂
I lost my Splatoon 2 save when I got my OLED, as I forgot to do a transfer and instead relied on cloud saves. Admittedly that was my fault.
But it was a blessing in disguise. I started a new save file after having not touched the game for 5 years, and am already Level 16, beat Octo Canyon and Octo Expansion, got all the amiibo gear, and am Professional 300+ in Salmon Run, with endgame gear for Turf Wars.
It got me back into the game, whereas I likely never would have played again otherwise.
@Eddiezus If you have access to the original Switch you can recover your Splatoon 2 state by performing a console-to-console transfer.
most likely because of cheaters reason why theres no cloud save for online play which is good move.
ok..ok...but still no BATTLE AGAINST BOTS, offline, (all game modes)?
I still won´t buy.
My guess is that the game will create two save files with one of them being the online data which will not be backed up by the cloud. Honestly, as long as all the gears and weapons get backed up that's all I care about. It would be such a pain in the butt having to rebuy and upgrade everything all over again if something were to happen to my Switch, specially if is event exclusive gear like the Halloween or Christmas gear in Splatoon 2.
Having all the offline data separate from the online data for cloud back up compatibility is a smart idea.
@Ventilator
This is true and is great for the Xbox gang.
Of course Xbox are really really trying to get back on track and are easy the most customer friendly team out there and have the money to do so.
Xbox issue is they don’t know how, outside of Forza Horizon 5 to produce and deliver a top end AAA studio game for the mass market, that captures the public imagination and drives console and game pass sales to the Sony and Nintendo level.
@Dezzy70 Microsoft have more than Forza for mass market.
Sea of Thieves have 25 millions players on PC/Xbox alone.
Halo and Gears of War sold millions outside Game Pass.
Bethesda games is for mass market, and Doom and The Elder Scrolls games sells millions outside Game Pass.
Halo and Forza is Microsoft's answer to Mario and Mario Kart.
You would be surprised that most Sony exclusives sold on PS4 didn't sell well. Third party games dominated top 10 on PS4 every year.
Nintendo have many games that don't sell well too, but Nintendo already know it. Games like Wario Ware, Mario Strikers, Mario Golf etc. is only to fill gaps.
Mario Kart and Pokemon sales is what paying for those "obscure" games.
Sony were very good at filling gaps on PS3, but on PS4 and PS5 they ignore filling gaps as they say it costs too much money. In fact their first party games nowadays is so expensive that they had to release on PC too, to cover the costs.
Sony have said this themselves, and were in media worldwide. They even registered "Playstation PC" brand for PC ports.
@Ventilator
I think each company has its own strategy what is best for their business model.
Nintendo I guess need to make it count it’s their main business but they are branching out, but it is game related like the theme park.
Sony the game business is massive for them and they have to make that count, they have other businesses as we know, movies and TVs etc.
Microsoft, don’t have to make anything count they are a trillion dollar company can offer anything at anytime. Their real big market is pc software and severs etc as we know, Xbox is tiny overall. But at the end of this generation will sit in third and it will end similar to the Xbox one generation, maybe with a little gain. People can say game pass this and that but sell a console you stand a chance of selling a game pass subscription.
@Dezzy70 Yeah. In fact all 3 is quite different when it comes to 1st party games.
None of them is the best as it depends what you like to play.
On PS3 Sony also focused hard on FPS, Racing and obscure games like Wonderbook, Puppeteer, Eye Toy etc. Sadly not anymore.
Xbox is only a small part of Microsoft, and that is why the started with Game Pass to expand the market.
Game Pass would even be on Swith and Sony consoles if they didn't refuse.
Game Pass can be played with Cloud, TV Stick, TV App, Media boxes, PC, Web browsers, Tablets, Phones, Xbox consoles etc.
Game Pass is available for billions already, but majority never heard about Game Pass and don't even know how Cloud works.
In fact 99% probably don't know that Xbox Gamepads can be paired directly with Tablets, Phones, TV's, Media boxes etc.
Personally i'm mainly a PC gamer for many reasons.
I use heavy video apps etc, but can also play any new game on max settings, 165hz etc.
Lots of third party Sony exclusives comes to PC same day as PS5. Sony also started with 1st part ports over 1 year ago
100% of Xbox Series X games is released on PC same day.
PC have 10.000+ of games never released on any console.
Besides PC, i play on Switch.
My Xbox One X and PS4 collects dust.
@Dezzy70
I’m a big new game AAA gamer really, don’t really go for old games, or remaster or remakes.
Like new big and mainly adventurous.
BOTW, HFW etc.
Big platformer games as well, Mario Odyssey etc.
Don’t mind a bit of exploration fps as well.
Racers don’t make me buzz any more, thought MK8 Deluxe gets played online and couch competitions.
I was with Xbox since day on original Xbox and had all their consoles, and the moment Xbox just doesn’t do it for me Halo Infinite campaign was ok to a point.
But currently they are weak for me, especially with Starfield gone to 2023.
So just have Switch and PS5 now.
The Xbox series x console itself though is extremely well designed, more powerful and very good features. But it’s games that count and the type I like above.
@boxyguy Guess it's Splatoon 2 Steps Back... Alright I'll shut up
Oh nice, (Insert long tangent about something I don't really mind).
Idea: an account system like the one Fortnite has.
Again they make the simplest function be like pulling teeth.
I wonder if they've ever did anything about the hacking problem Splatoon 2 had.
Shows how poorly planned the online infrastructure was made.
The reason there is no save cloud data for online play is that currently there is no way to prevent you from restoring your save data to a previous rank (this could imply you can keep a certain rank forever or prevent falling from it)
If the game had an account system that kept player progress on a dedicated server, then this wouldn't be an issue.
