Kirby and the Forgotten Land has set a number of records since it crashed onto our Switch's on its delightful warp star of adorableness. It marked the franchise's biggest launch in the UK ever, and it was the third best-selling game of March in the US.
Now, in another equally amazing result, Nintendo has confirmed that Kirby's latest adventure sold over 2.1 million units in just two weeks and has sold over 2.65 million copies to date. This was revealed as part of the company's latest financial report.
Kirby's other Switch outing — Kirby Star Allies — sold 2.56 million copies by March 2019, a whole year after the game came out. The 2018 side-scroller currently sits at over 3.42 million sales, so it seems likely that Kirby's apocalyptic adventure is going to overtake its predecessor.
Kirby has never been a big seller for Nintendo, but these figures are very encouraging. Switch fever, combined with a quality 3D platformer, has really helped boost this game. So much so that it's actually now the fourth best-selling entry in the series, which is might impressive for only being out for over a month. DS remake Kirby Super Star Ultra is just ahead of it at round 3 million, followed Kirby Star Allies, but the best-selling game is still Kirby's Dream Land, the very first game in the series.
The Game Boy game sits at around double the number of sales compared to the most recent entry, at around 5.13 million. But we're talking about a game that's 30 years old — can Kirby and the Forgotten Land break the biggest Kirby record going and become the best-selling game in the series? If Metroid Dread can harness Switch-mania and become the best-selling entry in the Metroid series ever, we think Kirby can do the same.
Let us know what you think of Kirby's sales figures and whether you think the newest entry will become the best-selling in the franchise in the comments!

Kirby in the big leagues now
Switch seems like its boosting every franchises sales.
I think Kirby and the Forgotten Land can top those sales or come very close.
@Abeedo Tbf putting more effort into it/making it 3D helped as well. I didn't care about Stars Allies at all but I bought The Forgotten Land
Can't believe the title lied to me. If this really is "The Forgotten Land", why are people not forgetting about it and not talking about it. What a scam.
Of any modern Kirby game, THIS GAME deserves to dethrone that Gameboy classic and even throw down with the other classics in the series. It's not just more good Kirby. It's great Kirby along with what feels like a whole new entry to a whole new style of Kirby games we can anticipate.
I think Kirby Super Star Ultra sold about 3 million on the DS, so that would make Forgotten Land 4th in sales. But that 2.65 million in a month is still hella impressive and it's probably the only title capable of catching the 5.2 million sales of Kirby's Dreamland 1.
Great to see this. Once it goes on sale at Smyths and I have the money for it, definitely going to pick this since I loved the demo.
Also, I love how I can immediately tell who took the picture for the article's thumbnail. Very good aesthetic @DreamlandGem!
Love the gameplay,
but some of the bosses look very charmless
and more like Playstation era platformer villains
than Kirby characters to me.
I still haven’t purchased this game cause Im still getting mileage out of pkmn legends but I’ll probably get it around july, even though Im a xenoblade fan I just don’t have the time to invest in a huge jrpg right now so Kirby will be my summer game
@Axecon You're right! Let me correct that. Thanks for pointing it out.
I’m very reluctant to pay FULL price for a 2D side scroller pretty much since Super Mario 64 brought us 3D platformers last century. Therefore as Star Allies was not $20 I didn’t pick it up. They tried harder and succeeded with Forgotten Land so I purchased it. Great game and It deserves to sell 5 million+
Well deserved, it's an incredible game and I'm amazed how perfect and polished it is for HAL's first proper 3D platformer... Makes it feel like HAL's talent has been wasted for a long time on only simple 2D games. Can they help Sonic Team make the next 3D Sonic? ;P
Excited for the future of Kirby!
Bought it day 1 to play w/ my wife, we're finished now at 82%, all of the treasure road levels are 1 player and we didn't feel like doing the Z cup right after the 12 boss battle, but my kids are playing it now gong for 100% so we'll get another couple of weeks out of it.
Still seems a bit expensive at $60 for what you get but at least most of the game is co-op. Feels only about 85% finished though for a Nintendo game. They don't make it easy to see what you are missing to pick level to play, and why can't we display all of out collectibles rather than only 3 on a shelf or 1 on a table? I stopped collecting them b/c there was no.point. SSB Melee or Brawl 20 years ago let you arrange them all on 1 table, it was a nice touch. Maybe the Switch 2 DX version will feel complete.🤷
Should've released during Christmas
This game deserves all the accolades it receives. It's a great game.
I think THIS absolutely deserves these sales and should dethrone the "multiplayer" rushed anniversary title in time. Just gotta wait and see
I hope it hits number 1; I haven't played every Kirby game, but this is the best one in my experience and opinion.
@Fizza D'awww thank you very much!!
This game rules and is packed with fun content. One of the Switch's best game imo.
Truly brilliant game...highly reccomend this one! So much fun...couldn't stop smiling whilst playing (except for the really tricky boss fights haha)
When the article says “to date” is it really to date, or is this as of March 31st?
Well deserved, it’s an excellent game and a really nice progression for the series.
But disappointed I was expecting over 3 million already
Finished it 100% recently and I'm not surprised. Despite some questionable design choices let's just say I look forward to playing it again in the near future. Return to Dreamland is still my favourite Kirby game however and I go back to that one very often.
Am I the only one who finds these numbers disappointingly low? 2.65m in 6 weeks are not much better than the 2.74m of Metroid Dread in 12 weeks. I always thought that Kirby is the much bigger franchise, and Forgotten Land is a big leap in this franchise.
I'm still waiting for Donkey Kong to go 3D and be the best-selling game in the series.
Just got into it, and this is definitely one of Nintendo's best games in a long time, after a pretty long drought of any real quality Nintendo content. Easily the best Kirby since the first, and I adored Robobot!
Not surprised the very first game sold best. The Game Boy was a beast.
Dethroning Kirby's Dream Land probably isn't in the cards, but I'm fully expecting it to top 3 million copies.
Deserves every sale it gets, I absolutely love this game and I usually don't like Kirby games.
Great news. Game looks awesome.
I'm always slightly surprised that the original is still the best selling. Yes the GameBoy was huge and Dreamland is maybe the best platform game on the console but the game was very easy and Kirby has snowballed over the decades since.
I'd guess that Forgotten Land has a decent chance.
@Max_the_German That's in less than 1 week, not in 6 weeks. These numbers only go up to March 31st
Kirby and the Forgotten Land will be number 1 soon enough. The first true 3D Kirby has interested a lot of people in this one.
As much as i would love to, 5million seems very optimistic almost unrealistic to be honest 😕
Congratulations Kirby!!
Game of the year so far still for me..
This Kirby game is just so fantastic. It's so so good. I hope they make a sequel.
I can't believe Nintendo is just cranking out insta-classics for the Switch. There have not been many misses at all over the last 5 or so years which is quite remarkable. This is a really great time to be a Nintendo fan!
Great, overtake the trash that is Star Allies.
Kirby and the Forgotten Land is the best Kirby game so far, i can see Kirby and the Forgotten Land becoming the best selling game of the franchise.
@IceClimbers I don’t think so: According to the report, there were 2.1m in 2 weeks, starting 25 March, so actually already this period exceeds 31 March. 2.65m is „now“ (= 10 May? -> 6 weeks).
Absolute poyo!
Awesome! Glad to see that Forgotten Land is selling very well. Hope it surpasses Dream Land in sales.
