It's safe to say the second movie outing for Sonic the Hedgehog has been a huge success for SEGA and Paramount Pictures.
According to a box office update via Deadline, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has almost reached $300 million in global earnings. In comparison, the original banked $319.7 million worldwide, which means the blue blur's second movie is currently on track to surpass this amount.
"The international Sonic 2 cume is now $142M for $287.8M global meaning the little blue critter will zoom past $300M any day now.
"Leading the charge for Sonic are the UK ($26.3M), Mexico ($15.7M), France ($14.3M), Australia ($13.1M) and Brazil ($8.9M). Sonic goes head-to-head with the Fantastic Beasts in the Middle East next weekend. Japan is on deck for August."
It's also noted how well it's performed in the US, reinforcing the fact it's officially the biggest video game movie domestically:

I re watched the first one last week & I thought why did they need to use an elevator to get to the top of the building when sonic can run up them lol
Really enjoyed it for what it was. It’s dumb, and it’s weird, and it’s way too long, but Sonic fans will get a kick out of all the fan service. I’m shocked their utilising the series’ lore as much as they are.
When will it come to Netflix?
Absolutely well deserved. Great film with a questionable second act.
Saw it in a packed theatre last week. great film, glad to see it's doing well. Can't wait for the third one. fingers crossed they get Jim back.
I'm just waiting for the Sonic - MCU crossover. It's obvious the Chaos Emeralds are the Infinity Stones by another name.
@Would_you_kindly They are trying to stay hidden. At that point in the movie, people didn't know about Sonic, and the less people who knew the better.
@AndrewP Dude. You can't-- you can't be serious right now, yeah? Please tell me you're joking. The Chaos Emeralds are in no way related to the Infinity Stones
So just more proof there hasn't been an actual good video game movie yet then..
I'm just waiting for LoL: Arcane season 2. That show is just beautifully done in every way.
@fighting_game_player @ShadowofTwilight22 The plot would focus on how there are seven Chaos Emeralds but only six known Infinity Stones, and it would feature a story arc with Dr Robotnik and Tony Stark being rivals at High School before Dr Robotnik goes all evil. It would rake in the cash.
@AndrewP How old are you man? Feels like I'm talking to a kid whose only watched MCU movies. The Chaos Emeralds have nothing to do with Infinity Stones PERIOD. Not everything needs an MCU crossover. I enjoy comic book films but not everything needs to be connected to Marvel. Go play some Sonic games to understand the actual lore of the Emeralds
@AndrewP This is the best joke I've ever heard, good job man.
Wait you're serious?
@HotGoomba @fighting_game_player @ShadowofTwilight22 Yeah, and we could somehow resurrect Quicksilver (Wanda's bro). He'd still be bad and side with Dr Robotnik, and then we'd see whether he's faster than Sonic. It's going to be awesome. I can't wait.
@HotGoomba @fighting_game_player @ShadowofTwilight22 Ohhhhh, and now I've realised that James Marsden is one of X-Men too so we could have multi-universe thing like DC and bring it all home that way too! Mind-blown!!!!
@AndrewP Honestly I can't tell if your being serious or joking. Maybe you're trolling or maybe you're just high but what? Why would this-- you know what? I'm done
@fighting_game_player Hey, man. Just having fun. No offence intended. It was a joke and I ran with it.
@AndrewP dude I'm not offended. I'm just confused as hell. From comparing the Infinity Stones to the Chaos Emerald to Wachoski being Cyclops it was just-- wild. Didn't know if you were joking or not
@Would_you_kindly Sonic wanted to maximise the time he spent with Tom before fleeing to the Mushroom planet where he would be alone forever. It's the reason why half the movie is a road trip too, there was nothing stopping him from running to San Francisco - the whole "I don't know the way there" thing was a bluff.
Amazing! Congratulations to the little blue blur! Now Sega needs to give us a Golden Axe movie!
@TommyTendo this is a paramount movie. It will likely be on Paramount+
@ShadowofTwilight22 @fighting_game_player you guys have no imagination or sense of humor and I don't know why you got so triggered by his comments 😂
@AndrewP hahaha you got them good
@AndrewP really more of an opportunity for a Smash Bros movie.
It won’t happen because Paramount currently has the contracts for Sonic movies and Universal has Nintendo, but still its nice to dream
I wonder if it will manage to get up near Detective Pikachu. I was surprised to see Pikachu did over $430 million. Sonic will probably struggle to surpass $400 million, but still good to see video game movies improving. Though admittedly it wouldn't be that hard, considering some of those video game movies, lol. Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, Need for Speed, Bloodrayne, House of the Dead make the live action Super Mario movie look quite good by comparison, lol
@Eddyson runs down it as soon as they get to the top though 😂
@Orpheus79V I think that bit was just put in the film so they could do the baby in a bag joke in the elevator 😂
@TommyTendo If you are in North America it will launch on Paramount Plus, the current NA deal for Paramount's slate of theatrical releases is that window 1 has a minimum of 45 days. Some films appear exactly 45 days after, but others have been up to 60 days, no official guidelines as to why but it seems to depend on how successful the theatrical run is (ie if people are still going to the cinema in decent numbers, they push back the digital release). Best guess going by the previous release dates of all their other 2022 movies is it should be added sometime in May.
If you're in the UK/Eire, Paramount Plus is not launching til Summer. But before that, it will probably be available via various services as a rental download and digital purchase, on services like Amazon Prime, Sky Box Office or Virgin TV Go. Thats certainly what's happened to most of their recent releases.
I've said it here before but again just for the record, I loved this movie. As a fan, I enjoyed it waaaay more than the first, even though I really liked that one too.
As someone who has produced many feature films and occasionally writes and directs them, it clearly wasn't perfect, and if I switch the critical part of my brain on I could pick it to pieces and wax lyrical about its flaws for hours. But the simple fact remains, this film made me happier and I enjoyed my time in the cinema more than pretty much any other film I've seen since I was a kid. I came out of the cinema buzzing and was pretty much all I could think about for a solid week after.
The next day, I was in the supermarket and I saw a family, 2 parents around my age, and 2 little kids, a brother and sister, I'd guess around 6 and 8. They had 3 plushies, a Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles, and they were happily and excitedly playing with them, running round making them fly and fight and work together towards beating the clearly huge hoards of invisible badniks filling in the supermarket isles and attacking their parent's shopping cart. It made me really emotional that not just old fans like me liked the film, but it had really excited and sparked the imagination of a new generation,
who not only wanted to buy the merch to put on shelves like us oldies do, but were actually bonding over playing with them and making happy memories.
I'll definitely be going back to watch it a few more times on the big screen before the end of its run, its a film that deserves a big screen. But I also can't wait til I can own it and watch it at home as many times as I want... and probably make my own version where I edit out some of the bits I didn't like and make it "perfect" lol
@AndrewP lmaooooo the way you’re trolling all of those posters who lack a sense of humor and sarcasm and are loosing their minds is 👨🍳 💋 epic, well done 👌🏼
Above was the best troll I ever seen lmao
@Would_you_kindly that too.
