Sonic Frontiers isn't the only Sonic the Hedgehog game arriving in 2022. Sega will also be releasing Sonic Origins - a collection of classic Sonic games with added content and features.
Now, following on from this compilation being classified in South Korea, it's been discovered Sonic Origins has also been rated in Australia. The date of this classification is actually dated 1st April 2022, has been rated 'G' for general and the applicant is Sega of America.
Hopefully, this rating means Sega will be releasing Sonic Origins sooner rather than later. Keep in mind, that there's no exact release date for this collection just yet.
Included in Sonic Origins is Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic CD, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic & Knuckles. And once again, there'll be all sorts of enhancements included such as 16:9 widescreen support.
In our previous update, new key art for Sonic Origins was also discovered:

I already own 1 or 2 of those games twice on Switch and it would be thrice if I payed for expansion pack. Even without this new collection.
Sega seems to really like overlapping collections. Nintendo likes you to buy the same things over and over also, but at least it's usually once per console, not 4 times:
sega ages: sonic the hedgehog
sega genesis classics
NSO expansion pack Genesis
sonic origins

I have Sonic 2 on mobile (bought the no-ads thing) but otherwise don't have any of these games. I have never played Sonic 3 (and Knuckles), and apparently it's really good, so I'm probably gonna get this!
Everyone on this site probably has all of these games on something. But I can't resist having the whole set on Switch.
I do appreciate that darker shade of blue on Sonic compared to the lighter shade used in Mania.
well if it comes to Switch, maybe I will get this.
Well I guess an announcement is close
I loved Sonic on the Genesis back in the day, but I hadn't played any Classic Sonic since then. So I was excited when Sonic Mania was released... And I didn't really enjoy it that much. Then I heard Freedom Planet was kind of like Classic Sonic, but better. So I bought that... I've come to the shocking conclusion that for me, that time has passed. I guess I'm just not that into 2D Sonic any more. But I will be eagerly awaiting Frontiers. The screenshots they're released so far look promising.
I’ve played all of this games to death on wii, 3ds and ios. With sonic mania plus on switch Im actually set for 2d sonic for some time (I still haven’t beaten that game)
@FishyS
Well Sonic Origins is making actual changes to these games, unfortunately they’ve only announced widescreen support for all 5 games included at the moment, but these ratings mean an announcement is probably coming very coming soon, and they’ll probably announce the other addition features then.
I do hope that they have an option to combine Sonic games with Sonic & Knuckles & Knuckles in order to make the perfect Sonic game & Knuckles.
It would be similar to the original Sonic & Knuckles & Knuckles cartridge in order to add on to Sonic games. For example, inserting Sonic 3 into Sonic & Knuckles & Knuckles would make Sonic 3 & Knuckles & Knuckles, or inserting Sonic 2 into S&K would make Sonic 2 & Knuckles.
I think that it would be a cute way to add more features to the game.
Just give us sonic mania 2.
Finally, took them so long to remake their game instead of a port
@FishyS capcom did the same, with several collection featuring some same games.
@Uska pretty sure this is just a port.
@FishyS You know what, by the time Capcom release the Capcom Fighting Collection, this will be the fourth time they gave us another version of Street Fighter II (Hyper Street Fighter II). Before that we got Ultra Street Fighter II, then five versions of SFII in the Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection, and then three more with the Capcom Arcade Stadia. If Capcom put the Super NES, Game Boy, GBA, and Sega Genesis versions of SFII on NSO, then that would be like what the 12th times various versions of SFII got ported to Switch. That's too many SFII too much. Yeah Capcom love to shove SFII to our faces but when we demand just one version of Ultra SFIV they turn the other way.
@HotGoomba Cool idea but I think it could use a bit more knuckles.
@Pandy-the-Panda Would be nice if they add additional Sonic games to the list. Five games and 3 expansions ain't worth it. They need to add these nine titles to the collection as well:
That's a Sonic game for everyone that covers pretty much every genre (except RPG).
I used to have it, on mobile I think, kindle fire I think. Anyway, I haven’t played these in a wile so I will happily pick it up.
I’m definitely interested in this if they add the option to restart from the last zone after a game over like in Mania. I used to have Sonic Mega Collection as a kid and I could never play through them without getting a game over and restarting completely. That, plus widescreen and HD would make this an easy buy for me if the price is right.
@Specter_of-the_OLED
I agree that having only 5 games seems bad, but if these truely are native ports with big enough changes and additions, then I think it will be worth a buy.
Widescreen support is a great start to improving the experience, because you can see things that would previously have been off screen.
Here’s other things that I think would make up for them only including 5 games:
Playable Tails & Knuckles’s in all 5 games, with their full move sets (specifically talking about no Tails flight in Sonic 2).
Hidden Palace zone secret stage in Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
Original Sonic 3&K soundtrack.
Remastered music and sounds.
Stage transitions.
Extra Sonic 1 special stage to unlock super Sonic.
Sonic 3/mobile save system, or at least save states.
Using remastered (or at least Sonic 3) sprites in every game.
Online races with multiplayer, not just leaderboards.
Digital manuals.
Playable Mighty, Ray, Amy, and/or Metal Sonic (I’m definitely not expecting this though).
I definitely think that they should have a few unlockable emulated games such as Knuckles’s Chaotix, Spinball, and 3D Blast. In fact 3D blast is the only reason I still own Sega Mega Genesis Drive Classics.
I'm bored of the Mega Drive/Genesis games being released over and over. I would like to see Sonic games not included in a collection before like the less well known game Knuckles Chaotix. I've played it myself and I still own it today but I expect a lot of people probably haven't even heard of this game or played it so it would be nice for them to get to experience a lesser known game in the series. All of this being said it's nice to see Sonic 3 on its own again rather than Sonic 3 and Knuckles. It's been donkey's years since I played it ever since I sold it, something I deeply regret. Now I can finally fill in that gap and complete the collection once again. I mean I have all of the Mega Drive games on Steam but Sonic 3 by itself was one game you could never get. One thing I particularly like about it and it's likely my Nostalgia talking, but I just love the invincibility and Super Sonic music for it and I didn't like it being absent in Sonic 3 and Knuckles.
@TheFox I played Freedom Planet and thought it reminded me of Sonic, then I played Sonic Mania a year later and it was clear to me how Freedom Planet is inspired by Sonic, but they are two different experiences. If you can, give the Genesis games a second chance, if only for nostalgia's sake.
@HotGoomba The Sega Ages for Sonic 2 had Knuckles playable so maybe.
So I have never been able to play any classic style sonic games. The rush games on ds are the closest I have got. Is sonic mania a good starting point or should I go with the original games?
@blindsquarel Start with the originals cause Sonic Mania will definitely give you a hard time especially in the later levels like Hydrocity Zone. Still if you do start with Sonic Mania than any of the originals will feel like a cake walk. Sonic Mania had unique boss fight in every level, the originals doesn't so be aware of that. Also Hydrocity Zone had a boss fight that took place underwater with hazards so yeah good luck with that.
Hopefully since they’re saying 3K will be wide screen that probably means they’re having Christian Whitehead and some of the other people behind Mania involved. I’d be super excited if they added the option to play with the sprites and physics of Mania.
Would be even cooler if we could play Sonic 2, 3 + Knuckles all in one go. (Probably have to work in something where Sonic automatically gets the chaos Emeralds in 2 to make the beginning of 3 make sense.) but it’s be really cool to have one super long sonic game.
I don’t anticipate that though.
Still a somewhat remastered version of 3K with native wide screen would be awesome. There’s actually a huge mod community around Sonic 3 and Knuckles. I wouldn’t be surprised if they took some inspiration on changes that they could integrate.
Would also absolutely love to see Ray and Mighty added, but that feels unlikely.
@DavidMac Sonic 3&K will probably had widescreen support though whether it had it or not isn't much a concern to many, the real concern are the original music tracks from the Genesis originals. Most Sonic 3&K fans want the original music back as it won't feel like the originals without them.
I’m desperate to play Sonic 3 on Switch. I can play it on Vita, 3DS and my Genesis, but greedily I need it on Switch to complete classic Sonic on it. Please, Sega, no announcements of announcements ten times over before releasing this, lol
@Specter_of-the_OLED you sound like you’ve listened to too many bots commissioned by the estate of Michael Jackson. Realistically, the creep is dead, so I do t mind if the estate gets a pay day. But quite frankly there are some fantastic musicians out there who could make new and original or remixed tracks that would be much better than the PC versions of the music that might not be the originals but would still be fantastic.
The music in the original game was fun and really good, but I’d be just as happy with new music if I at least get the core game play.
So, I suppose with the release of this thing, we can forget about getting Sonic 1, 2 and 3 on Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pak?
@Pillowpants
1. Sonic 2 is already on Sega Mega Genesis Drive Nintendo Switch Online.
2. The versions in Sonic Origins will have widescreen and other additional features, so the original versions could still eventually release on NSO, especially Sonic 1.
@Pandy-the-Panda I meant the whole "trilogy".
I hope those 'enhancements' boil down to more than just wide-screen emulation.
M2 have already released the definitive versions of Sonic 1 and 2 for the Switch eshop. Unless this collection includes those versions, and makes similar refinements to Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic CD, then I don't see the value in it.
It's also unclear whether players will be able to combine S&K with the compatible games, which hasn't always been the case in these collections.
@James696
Good news, some info just got leaked
@blindsquarel From someone who grew up with the originals, Sonic Mania is the ultimate 2d sonic experience. It takes what worked from each of those games, learns from what didn't work, and has some of the best level design in the series.
@Pillowpants Probably due to the music dispute with the Jackson estate, we won't see 3&K on NSO online. And the version of 2 in this collection will be enhanced.
